SEVEN (7) YEAR OLD BOY DROWNS IN SEPTIC TANK IN MONZE

A seven-year-old boy has died after drowning in an open septic tank filled with water in Sibusu area, Chief Moonze, Monze District.

The tragic incident occurred on January 27, 2026, between 14:00 hours and 15:43 hours. The boy reportedly left home earlier in the afternoon to play with his younger siblings.

At around 15:00 hours, the children attempted to wash their feet at an open manhole containing water. In the process, the boy slipped and fell into the septic tank. The other children immediately alerted a nearby adult resident, who then informed her son.

The man rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the child from the septic tank. However, the boy was already deceased by the time he was pulled out. The child’s mother later identified the body as that of her son, prompting the matter to be reported to police.

Monze Central Police Station received the report at about 15:45 hours. Police officers who rushed to the scene found that the body had already been retrieved. A physical inspection revealed no visible injuries on the body, and no foul play is suspected.

The body was subsequently deposited at Monze Mission Hospital mortuary, where it awaits postmortem examination and burial.

Police have since reiterated the need for communities to secure open septic tanks and manholes to prevent similar incidents.

By Kasimilo | Urban Pulse Zambia
Lusaka – January 22, 2026

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested seven people following coordinated operations that dismantled large-scale cannabis trafficking networks across several provinces.

In Muchinga Province, DEC officers in Nakonde District, working alongside Zambia Police officers from Mafinga District, carried out a controlled delivery operation in Isoka District. The operation involved tracking a suspicious parcel transported in a Toyota Noah vehicle until it reached its destination.
The operation led to the arrest of the sender and receiver, identified as Gift Kaira (20) and Edony Sinkamba (27), both residents of Isoka District.
Police recovered 164 large packages of dry loose cannabis, concealed in a polythene bag, with a combined weight of 96.8 kilogrammes.

Meanwhile, in Nchelenge District, Luapula Province, officers arrested Mwansa Mwelwa (38) for allegedly trafficking 10.2 kilogrammes of dry loose cannabis.

In a separate operation in Mansa District, DEC officers apprehended Martin Lwimba (25) of Kabende Village for allegedly cultivating cannabis plants weighing 33.6 kilogrammes.
In Lusaka Province, DEC uncovered a suspected transnational drug trafficking operation following intelligence about a controlled delivery of cannabis from South Africa.

A 57-year-old woman, Judy Thebe, of Meanwood Ibex Hill, was arrested at Intercity Bus Terminus in Lusaka after officers intercepted a consignment of 808 grammes of cannabis transported by bus via Chirundu.

Two additional male suspects connected to the Lusaka case have also been arrested and are currently detained to assist with ongoing investigations.
All suspects remain in lawful custody and are expected to appear in court.

DEC has since appealed to members of the public to continue sharing information on suspected drug-related activities, stressing that public cooperation remains key to preventing and combating crime.

VATICAN WEIGHS POSSIBLE RECALL OF LUSAKA ARCHBISHOP AMID ZAMBIAN PROBE
By Kasimilo | Urban Pulse Zambia

Sources within the Catholic Church say the Vatican is considering the possible recall of Lusaka Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda following an ongoing investigation by Zambian authorities
Senior officials in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State — the department responsible for foreign relations — are reportedly handling the matter at a high diplomatic level. While no official decision has been announced, discussions are said to be ongoing due to the sensitive nature of the case.

Archbishop Banda is currently under investigation by Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) over allegations linked to money laundering and the suspected unlawful possession of a government-issued motor vehicle.
The vehicle in question, a Toyota Hilux believed to belong to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), is alleged to have been in the Archbishop’s possession between 2021 and 2023. Investigators suspect it may have been unlawfully transferred as an inducement or reward.

During questioning by the DEC, Archbishop Banda reportedly exercised his constitutional right to remain silent.
Church and diplomatic observers suggest that the Vatican may opt for an internal resolution, which could include recalling the Archbishop to Rome under administrative leave or sabbatical, rather than allowing the matter to escalate into a prolonged public legal dispute.

If recalled, Archbishop Banda would become the second Zambian Catholic prelate to be withdrawn from active leadership following controversy. The first was Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, who was recalled in the early 2000s after doctrinal disputes.
The Vatican now faces a delicate task — balancing the Church’s moral authority, respect for Zambia’s legal process, and maintaining stability within the Catholic community in a region where the Church continues to grow rapidly.

No official statement has yet been issued by the Holy See regarding the matter.

POLICE NAB OVER 1,200 SUSPECTS IN KITWE FESTIVE CRACKDOWN
By Kasimilo | Urban Pulse Zambia

Police in Kitwe have arrested more than 1,200 people in connection with various criminal activities during the recent festive season, Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi has confirmed.

Mr. Yuyi said the arrests were made between December 24, 2025, and January 2, 2026, following intensified police operations across the district aimed at curbing crime during the holiday period.
Speaking this morning at Kitwe Central Police Station during the display of recovered items, the Commanding Officer assured residents that police will continue working round-the-clock to restore and maintain law and order in the city.

He warned individuals engaging in criminal activities to abandon such behaviour, stating that the police will not hesitate to act against anyone found terrorising members of the public.
Among the items recovered during the operations were television sets, mattresses, solar panels, gas stoves, mobile phones, gaming machines commonly known as “bonanza,” and three motor vehicles, among others.

Mr. Yuyi noted that the recoveries come at a time when the Copperbelt Province has been recording an increase in criminal activities, adding that police patrols and intelligence-led operations will remain heightened.

DEC QUESTIONS ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA OVER ALLEGED UNLAWFUL VEHICLE POSSESSION
By Kasimilo | Urban Pulse Zambia

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has issued a warn-and-caution statement to Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, Dr. Alick Banda, in connection with investigations surrounding the alleged unlawful possession of a motor vehicle.

According to the Commission, the matter is being handled by its Anti–Money Laundering Investigations Unit and centres on a Toyota Hilux, registration number ALF7734, which is reportedly registered as property of the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
DEC says investigations indicate that Archbishop Banda is suspected to have been in possession of the vehicle during a period spanning April 22, 2021, to December 27, 2023, though the exact dates remain unclear.

The Commission alleges that the vehicle may have been unlawfully obtained from ZRA, an offence that falls under Section 319(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
DEC further disclosed that Dr. Banda was formally cautioned and given an opportunity to explain how he came into possession of the vehicle, but he opted to exercise his right to remain silent.

In a statement issued by DEC Public Relations Officer Allan Tamba, the Commission emphasized that investigations are still ongoing and assured the public that further updates will be provided once the process is concluded.
The development has attracted public attention, given the senior religious office held by the Archbishop, as the nation watches closely for the outcome of the probe.
