The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has clarified the position of Copper Queens head coach Nora Häuptle following recent public discussions over her future with the national team.

FAZ says all outstanding matters between the Association and Coach Häuptle have been resolved following a series of meetings with FAZ president Keith Mweemba.

Acting Deputy General Secretary Iva Lengwe confirmed that Coach Häuptle has since submitted her travel itinerary to the FAZ Secretariat and is expected in Zambia ahead of the Four Nations Tournament scheduled for the June FIFA Window.

The tournament will feature Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso.

“As things stand at present, Coach Nora will certainly lead the Copper Queens at the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament,” Lengwe emphasised.

Lengwe said the FAZ Secretariat remains focused on ensuring the Copper Queens are adequately prepared for the WAFCON finals in July and other upcoming international assignments.

He also thanked the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, as well as members of the public, for their concern and continued interest in the welfare and progress of the national women’s team.

ZAMBIA HIGHLIGHTS FOOTBALL’S ROLE IN UNITY AHEAD OF 2026 WORLD CUP

By Francis Chipalo

The Ministry of Information and Media has held talks with former CAF president Ahmad and former FAZ president Andrew Kamanga on the role of football in promoting unity, diplomacy, and development.

Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said the meeting, focused on the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and its potential as a tool for global engagement.

“As the world prepares for this historic tournament next month, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, we are reminded that football speaks a universal language,” Kawana said.

Kawana noted that the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams for the first time would create unprecedented opportunities to showcase global talent and bring diverse cultures together.

He added that Zambia remains committed to leveraging the power of media and information to promote sports development and national unity.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition of the tournament hosted across three countries.

Breaking: Councillor Simataa quits UPND, citing passage of undemocratic laws

Controversial and outspoken former Kamwala Ward Councillor Mainda Simataa has resigned from the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), citing the passage of undemocratic laws by Parliament.

In a letter addressed and delivered to the UPND Secretary General, Simataa stated that his departure is a show of disapproval of the said undemocratic Laws, and cited the recently enacted Public Gathering Act as undemocratic, and a violation of the Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and the rights to Assembly, Association, and Expression.

Simataa who is no stranger to controversy, first made headlines in 2022 when he led a group of Kamwala South residents to DMMU under the office of the Vice President, in protest of a lack of support during one of the worst floods in Lusaka City. This action resulted in an immediate response that brought relief to over 300 flood victims, but earned Simataa a 3 month Party suspension and an embattled and frosty relationship within the UPND.

However, one of his most memorable escapades came in 2023 when he dumped a truckload of garbage at the Lusaka City Councils offices, a move that led to notable improvements in waste management policies.

In 2023, Councillor Simataa also became an unofficial outspoken spokesperson and advocate for over 3000 unpaid Lusaka City Council workers who went for 4 months without salaries, and his advocacy resulted in changes in Council top management levels which eventually resulted in salary arrears being cleared and normalized.

Councillor Simataa has stated that he will not be re-contesting his position as Kamwala Ward Councillor in the coming August general elections, and has thanked the Party for having given him an opportunity to serve the people of Kamwala and Lusaka City, and noted that several positive socioeconomic strides made under the new dawn administration were worth commending.

MUNDUBILE SWITCHES POLITICAL PARTY, TO UNDERGO FRESH PREPROCESSING EXERCISE

Former Mporokoso member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has switched from standing on the Forum for Democracy and Development FDD party ticket to National Reconciliation Party for
Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) as an aspiring candidate for the August 13, 2026 General election.

This means that Mr. Mundubile will need to present 1000 supporters at a go to be processed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) before filling in his nomination.

Mr. Mundubile had his supporters preprocessed by the Commission as an FDD Presidential aspiring candidate but his move to switch has automatically nullified the prepocessing earlier done.

In response to a query by Diamond News, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis earlier clarified that presidential candidates who paid nomination fees and had their 1,000 supporters preprocessed under one political party, but later decide to contest under another party, will be required to undergo a fresh preprocessing exercise.

Ms. Zaloumis said the supporters initially preprocessed were tied to the original candidate and party.

RUNAWAY SHUNT TRAIN ACCIDENT AT BWANA MKUBWA

It is with deep concern and sadness that we confirm a serious train accident which occurred today, 15 May 2026, at approximately 15:00 hours, involving a shunt train movement at Bwana Mkubwa.

The incident involved locomotive number 4346 and 11 wagons loaded with coal, which experienced a runaway movement in the direction of Ndola before derailing and overturning between Bwana Mkubwa and Ndola Railway Station, near Itawa Bridge.

Preliminary reports indicate that two individuals who were walking within the railway reserve strip may have been trapped beneath the overturned wagons. Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway.

Our thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families during this extremely difficult time. The possibility of loss of life makes this incident particularly tragic, and every effort is being made to locate and assist those involved as quickly and safely as possible.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the runaway movement and determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and remain fully committed to cooperating with relevant authorities throughout the rescue, recovery, and investigation process.

Further updates will be issued periodically.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

A runaway train is a train that starts moving on its own and cannot be controlled or stopped, usually because of brake failure, a mechanical problem, or being accidentally released. It may keep moving and even pick up speed until it gets off the track or is brought under control by a train crew.

Zambia, Israel Sign US$460 Million Debt Deal

By Cindy Mulomba

Zambia and Israel have signed 460 Million United States Dollars debt restructuring agreement to support Fiscal stability and economic recovery.

The agreement provides for the restructuring of the outstanding obligations to Israel through to 2043 .

The debt relates to facilities supported by Israel's Foreign Trade Risks Insurance Corporation Limited -ASHRA- covering sectors including agriculture, defence, and healthcare.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane said the agreement demonstrates the progress Zambia continues to make in restoring fiscal discipline and rebuilding international confidence following the country's external debt default in 2020.

Dr. Musokotwane said the restructuring arrangement will help reduce debt service pressures and create additional fiscal space for strategic investments in infrastructure, economic recovery programmes, and social sector support.

He thanked the Government of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Nyetanahu for the cooperation, patience, and constructive engagement throughout the restructuring process and the collaborative negotiations that led to the successful conclusion of the agreement.

And, Israeli Ambassador to Zambia, Ofra Farhi, reaffirmed Israel's commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with Zambia.

Ms FARHI praised the Zambian Government for its continued commitment to transparent and constructive engagement during the restructuring process.

The Agreement forms part of Zambia's ongoing debt restructuring programme under the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatment, which seeks to restore long-term debt sustainability, strengthen macroeconomic stability, and support inclusive economic growth.
