UPND STANDS WITH PRESIDENT HICHILEMA IN PROTECTING NATIONAL SECURITY AND UPHOLDING LAW AND ORDER

Lusaka, August 20, 2026 — The United Party for National Development (UPND) stands firmly with President Hakainde Hichilema in his constitutional responsibility to protect the lives, property and security of the people of Zambia.

Zambia is a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law. Political power must be pursued through lawful and democratic means, including elections, and never through fi****ms, military weapons or organised violence.

We commend the men and women in uniform, as well as the joint security agencies, for their intervention in preventing a situation that could potentially have escalated into serious violence and threatened the peace and stability that Zambia has enjoyed.

Had the security agencies not acted decisively, the situation could have deteriorated with consequences that would have been difficult to contain, including widespread violence and loss of life.

The President has a constitutional duty to safeguard national security. Any credible threat to the lives of citizens, public institutions and national stability must therefore be addressed through lawful and constitutionally mandated security measures.

We wish to make it abundantly clear that no individual is above the law, regardless of political affiliation, position or status in society. Political affiliation cannot be used as a shield against accountability where there is credible evidence of criminal conduct.

We equally remind all citizens that the responsibility for maintaining law and order rests with legally mandated law enforcement and security institutions. No civilian group or individual has the authority to take the law into their own hands or assume the functions of security agencies.

Recent developments have also caused us to reflect seriously on statements from some opposition quarters suggesting a willingness to “die” or “kill” in the pursuit of political power. We may have underestimated the seriousness of such rhetoric, and the country must not ignore statements that could encourage or legitimise violence.

The UPND commends the joint security agencies for their efforts to protect the Zambian people and prevent what could have become a serious threat to national stability.

The UPND stands with President Hakainde Hichilema in defending peace, constitutional democracy, law and order, and the security of every Zambian.

Zambia belongs to all of us, and no political ambition should ever be allowed to put the lives of citizens at risk.

POLICE SUMMONS MUNDUBILE, MAKEBI ZULU OVER NATIONAL SECURITY INVESTIGATIONS

The Zambia Police Service, working jointly with other law enforcement agencies, has summoned former presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and lawyer Makebi Zulu for questioning over alleged links to a number of crimes and activities under investigation.

Police Inspector General Graphel Musamba says the investigations, which have been ongoing for several years, are focused on serious national security threats, including alleged activities with the potential to threaten or undermine national security.

According to Mr Musamba, official call-outs have been served on the duo’s lawyers, with police expressing hope that they will appear on the specified dates.

The Police says it is aware of the duo’s location after they reportedly sought refuge under international law with a known international organisation, and has assured that they are entitled to due process and the protection of their fundamental human rights.

The Police has also warned that other individuals may be summoned as persons of interest, urging members of the public to cooperate with lawful investigations.

Authorities have further disclosed that they are actively investigating alleged crimes of terrorism and terrorist financing, while warning against harbouring, assisting or financing persons considered to be persons of interest or wanted by the Police.

Police have called on the public to report suspicious activities and remain law-abiding, saying proportionate measures will be taken against anyone who resists lawful police requests through threats, violence or attacks on law enforcement officers.

PETITION FILED OVER MUFULIRA CENTRAL PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION

A petition has been filed challenging the election of the Member of Parliament for Mufulira Central Constituency.

In a statement the petitioner Ms. Anna Mwitwa who was aspiring for the said seat as an independent candidate said the decision was not taken lightly but is aimed at defending democracy and ensuring elections are free, fair and transparent. Key issues cited in the petition include:

1. G20 Forms: Allegations that some forms were not signed by duly appointed agents, raising questions on result verification.

2. Ballot Movement: A vehicle alleged to be associated with the UPND candidate was reportedly used to move ballot papers and was later apprehended by police. There are concerns the vehicle is no longer at the police station.

3. Alleged Inducements: Claims of money distributed to churches and voters, and mealie meal, cooking oil and other items given to voters before polling day. Evidence, the statement says, will be presented in court.

4. Other Irregularities: Matters that collectively raise concerns on whether the election met the standards of a free and fair election.

Ms. Anna Mwitwa stated, “This petition is not about refusing to accept democracy. It is about defending democracy. If there was nothing wrong with the election, then the courts will have the opportunity to examine the evidence and determine that.”

She further noted that as a legal practitioner, she will allow the courts to determine the matter based on evidence and will not litigate it in the media. Further proceedings will be determined by the courts.

NO INJURIES OBSERVED ON LISA’s BODY AS INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE

SUDDEN DEATH

August 20, 2026 - The Zambia Police Service, through Chelstone Police Station, received a report of a sudden death involving a 25-year-old female identified as Lisa Mutalu.

The report was received today August 20, 2026, at around 09:30 hours. The incident is reported to have occurred between 03:30 and 04:30 hours at Victoria Hospital in Lusaka.

According to the preliminary report, on August 19, 2026, at around 20:30 hours, the deceased was in the company of two female friends at a named hotel where she served as an ambassador.

At around 22:30 hours, the three proceeded to another drinking place within Lusaka, where they continued socialising.

Between 02:30 and 03:00 hours on August 20, 2026, the deceased's boyfriend, identified as Caleb Lisa, also known as Andrea, arrived and picked up the three women. He subsequently dropped the two friends in Minestone/Casanova area and remained with the deceased, with whom he was reportedly staying with in Kalundu area.

It is alleged that upon arrival at their residence, the deceased began vomiting and subsequently became unconscious. Her boyfriend is reported to have contacted a friend, who assisted in taking her to Victoria Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police officers processed both the primary and secondary scenes. The body was subsequently deposited at FSG Mortuary before being transferred to the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

No physical injuries have been observed on the body.

An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.

The Zambia Police Service will provide further information as investigations progress.

Official Statement from the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance

We wish to re-affirm and reiterate the statement issued by our presidential candidadate Hon. Brian Mundubile and Hon. Makebi Zulu.

The statement expressed the commitment that as a contending ticket in the 2026 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections, they would seek legal redress to challenge the disputed results of the 2026 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government.

The Alliance has documented irregularities relating to ballot security violation, ballot stuffing, transportation and handling of electoral materials, and extensive discrepancies between votes recorded at polling stations and figures and subsequently the altered results announced by the national totalling centre led by ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis.

Other matters of concern regard the presence and active role of the military who faciliated the raid and invasion of Totalling Centres where key audit documents were confiscated and election results were altered.

We must state that the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), which Zambia is a signatory, the African Union (AU) strictly opposes military intervention in democratic governance and actively condemns excessive military presence at polling stations, as it undermines election integrity.

These facts have also been recorded, established and reported by all local and internatiinal monitors and observers as released in their preliminary reports.

MATTERS AFFECTING OUR SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLES; RESOLUTE PARTY AND NRPUP

It must be made very clear that to participate in the 2026 General Elections, the Tonse Alliance comprising many political parties and civil society groupings, adopted the NRPUP as a special purpose vehicle while the Pamodzi Alliance with similar diverse composition picked the Resolute Party.

As seen from earlier attacks against the Patriotic Front, these manouvres are futile as the main Opposition to President Hakainde Hichilema is the people of Zambia who have suffered the misrule and sufferings under his rule.

The nation has since witnessed the established pattern where the state targets leaders of these entities, which actions have been an immoral and dastard attack against democracy and the multi-party character of our country.

These matters will be addressed later.

We will focus on the urgent matter at hand.

It will therefore be betrayal for Hon. Brian Mundubile who is carrying the aspirations and hopes of millions of Zambians who voted for him overwhelmingly not to pursue justice using constitutional means, in which we must demonstrate that the election and expressed Will of Zambians have been stolen and violated.

We also wish to condemn the heightened and continued harrasment, beatings, detention, arrests and raids against our key officials.

This is clearly being done to cause fear, prevent our legal challenge to petition the election results, organise witnesses and documents to the process.
We therefore call upon our members to remain strong and steadfast during this rrying times.

We also wish to thank the people of Zambia for trusting and supporting the leadership of Brian Mundubioe and Makebi Zulu as stewards for rgeir hopes and aspirations.

Former Lunte MP Mutotwe Kafwaya Shot Dead During Police Operation

LUSAKA — Former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya has been shot dead during an exchange of fire with law enforcement officers in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says Kafwaya was among individuals found at a residence raided by a joint task force on Friday, August 14, 2026.

According to Mr. Musamba, the operation was intelligence-led and followed information gathered after the recovery of K7.3 million in a separate operation in Lusaka.

He says security wings had been monitoring activities of individuals considered to be of national interest and suspected of posing a threat to national security since November 2023.

Mr. Musamba says officers encountered gunfire and resistance upon arriving at the Kabulonga residence, prompting them to return fire.

One unidentified man was fatally wounded and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following reports circulating on social media about a missing person, efforts were made to establish the identity of the deceased. Mr. Musamba says Kafwaya’s family was contacted and later positively identified the body as that of the former lawmaker.

Eleven people were arrested during the operation and are being held in connection with alleged offences relating to treason and any other offences that may emerge from investigations.

Among those arrested are three former commandos with specialised military training and two retired police officers.

The Inspector General says the suspects possess extensive military and weapons training, including marksmanship, intelligence gathering and commando tactics.

The joint task force also recovered several fi****ms and other items from the premises, including five AK-47 rifles with 60 rounds of ammunition, a Zastava pistol, a military-version automatic U*I, magazines, a bulletproof vest and a commando dagger.

Tactical equipment, walkie-talkies, night-vision binoculars and electronic devices were also recovered and will undergo forensic examination.

The CJOC says investigations are continuing to establish the ownership, source and intended use of the recovered items and their possible connection to the alleged offences.

Mr. Musamba has assured the public that the operation was not targeted at individuals based on their political affiliation, occupation or status.

He has urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as investigations continue.

MBALA MAYOR-ELECT DIES

The newly elected mayor of Mbala District Steward Simutenda has passed away in the early hours of today.

Mr Simutenda, who contested the mayoral election on the NRPUP ticket, reportedly died after an illness.

The newly elected mayor had been hospitalised about a week before Thursday’s elections after falling ill. Despite his health challenges, he on participated in the election and was subsequently elected mayor of Mbala.

His death comes less than a week after the election, cutting short what would have been his tenure in office.

Further details surrounding his death and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and relevant authorities.

The death of Simutenda has sent shockwaves through Mbala, with residents and political supporters expected to pay tribute to the late mayor-elect in the coming days.
