LUNTE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, MUTOTWE KAFWAYA, HAS ACCUSED THE UPND GOVERNMENT OF USING UNVERIFIED INFORMATION TO MISLEAD THE PUBLIC AND CREATE A FALSE IMPRESSION OF NATIONAL PROGRESS.
MR. KAFWAYA CRITICIZED WHAT HE TERMED THE GOVERNMENT’S UNSUSTAINABLE FISCAL APPROACH, ARGUING THAT THE CONTINUOUS INCREASE IN THE NATIONAL BUDGET IS A POOR ECONOMIC STRATEGY MEANT TO MAKE THE ADMINISTRATION APPEAR EFFECTIVE, WHILE IN REALITY, IT EXPOSES WEAK FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT.
HE QUESTIONED THE MINISTER OF FINANCE’S DECISION TO PRESENT FOUR YEARS’ WORTH OF ACHIEVEMENTS IN A SINGLE BUDGET ADDRESS, SAYING THIS APPROACH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO ASSESS OR VERIFY THE GOVERNMENT’S TRUE PERFORMANCE.
MR. KAFWAYA NOTED THAT ACHIEVEMENTS SHOULD BE PRESENTED YEAR BY YEAR, ALLOWING CITIZENS AND OVERSIGHT INSTITUTIONS TO TRACK PROGRESS AND HOLD GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE FOR ITS ACTIONS.

NGOCC Boycotts Constitutional Consultations, Cites Flawed and Politically Driven process

By Cleopatra Nankonde.

The Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has announced that it will not participate in the ongoing public consultations on the Constitutional Amendment process, describing the exercise as flawed, politically driven, and exclusionary.

NGOCC Board Chairperson, Ms. Beauty Katebe, said the decision followed extensive internal consultations and concerns over the legitimacy and intent of the process being led by the Technical Committee on Constitutional Amendments, which she likened to the previously rejected Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 7 of 2025.

Ms. Katebe noted that the current review appears focused on short-term political interests ahead of the 2026 General Elections, rather than fostering a lasting and inclusive constitutional order.

She further criticized the composition of the Technical Committee for lacking broad representation and for sidelining key groups such as youth and persons with disabilities. NGOCC has since urged Zambians to reject what it calls a politically motivated and exclusionary process.

*CEC Laments Rampant Vandalism of Infrastructure*

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) Plc has expressed concern over the cases of vandalism on its infrastructure.

Responding to a press query, Company Chief Operations Officer George Kang’ombe disclosed that the company has in the past five years incurred losses exceeding $400,000 due to vandalism-related incidents.

Mr. Kang’ombe said many parts of the infrastructure, such as copper conductors, steel members on the company’s towers, and insulator discs, have been damaged.

He explained that these thefts pose a serious threat to the community, including the risk of electrocution, interruption of power supply to customers, and disruption of critical processes that may lead to loss of life and revenue.

In a bid to raise awareness, CEC has embarked on an anti-vandalism campaign.

“Awareness among members of the public has improved, and people have come forward to provide the company with vital information. We have seen a positive impact, as vandalism incidents have relatively reduced" he said.

“CEC welcomes the public’s support in combating vandalism due to the negative effects of this scourge.”

Mr. Kang’ombe emphasized that it is important for the public to work with CEC to prevent vandalism, as the issue not only poses safety risks but also disrupts economic activity.
