In the community of believers, everyone is needed

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

The worldwide church has both unity and diversity. The same is true at the local level in the different congregations.

Believers form a unity through “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). At the same time, the Holy Spirit gives them “varieties of gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:4). One receives great faith, another the gift of sharing knowledge, a third is called to take a leadership role, et cetera. So, in addition to all the existing differences in background, character, and life circumstances, God deliberately generates even more diversity!

Paul compares the church to a body made up of many different parts, each with its own function within the whole. Not a single one can be missed! Imagine a body consisting entirely of hands, or entirely of eyes. That obviously wouldn’t work. Or even if only one body part were missing, it would already cause a serious limitation. For the body to function well, all the parts must play their own role.

When we apply this to the community of believers, it is important to value both the unity and the diversity. We can use our unique gifts for the benefit of the whole.

Do you feel valued in the (faith) community you are part of? How do you fit within the whole?

The importance of fellowship: walking together in faith

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42)

Yesterday we saw that our knowledge of God grows through contact with other believers. Today we look at a concrete example of what that can look like.

After the Lord Jesus had returned to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit, His disciples began to tell others about Him. They started in Jerusalem—the city where Jesus had been put to death. Through the work of the Spirit, many people became convinced that Jesus truly is the Son of God. They repented, joyfully accepted the offer of forgiveness, and were baptized. In a short time, a large group of believers was formed. They became a close-knit “fellowship.” They shared their possessions, went to the temple together, prayed together, celebrated the Lord’s Supper, and devoted themselves faithfully to the teaching of the apostles.

Just as there is great diversity among believers, there are also many different forms of faith communities. Yet the core is the same everywhere: whenever possible, Christians practice their faith together with others. Of course, it is also possible to pray and read the Bible individually or within the family, but serving and worshiping God “together with all the saints” is a special blessing.

How do you shape your faith? What place do the church, a small group, or other forms of fellowship with fellow Christians have in your life?
