(1) 2D Tracking (Two-Dimensional Tracking)
**What it does:**
2D tracking monitors the movement of specific points on a flat image over time.

**Tracks:**
- X position (left ↔ right)
- Y position (up ↕ down)

**What it does not track:**
- Depth
- Camera movement through space
- Perspective changes

**Typical uses:**
- Attaching text or graphics to moving objects
- Simple screen replacements (e.g., phone or TV screens)
- Stabilizing footage
- Creating motion graphics that follow a subject

**Example:**
Attaching a logo to a moving door or applying a blur effect to track a face.

**Limitations:**
If the camera rotates or perspective shifts, 2D tracking may misalign or appear unrealistic.

---

(2) 2.5D Tracking (Planar / Depth-Aware Tracking)
**What it does:**
2.5D tracking accounts for surface perspective and limited depth, though it doesn’t fully embrace 3D space.

**Tracks:**
- X and Y movement
- Rotation
- Scale
- Perspective changes (plane deformation)

**What it does not fully track:**
- True 3D camera movement
- Individual depth for separate objects

**Typical uses:**
- Replacing signs, posters, or walls
- Integrating graphics on surfaces like floors or billboards
- Screen replacements with perspective shifts

**Example:**
Replacing a billboard on a street seamlessly as the camera pans sideways.

**Why it's called "2.5D":**
It gives the illusion of 3D but operates primarily within a flat plane.

---

(3) 3D Tracking (Camera Tracking / Matchmoving)
**What it does:**
3D tracking rebuilds the actual camera motion in a three-dimensional space.

**Tracks:**
- X, Y, and Z position
- Camera rotation
- Real-world depth
- Scene geometry (points mapped in 3D space)

**What it enables:**
- Integration of 3D objects into live-action footage
- Accurate lighting and perspective matching
- Objects interacting with and moving behind real-world elements

**Typical uses:**
- Adding CGI elements like cars, buildings, or characters to real scenes
- Visual effects for movies or commercials
- Virtual production workflows

**Example:**
Inserting a realistic 3D car into a live-action street scene where it blends seamlessly with the environment.

As a vfx compositor you need to know difference, between 2D Tracking, 2.5D Tracking and 3D Tracking.
