ZAMBIA ARMY TARGETS 350 METRIC TONNES OF MAIZE TO BOOST NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY

(By Buffalo Reporter, Solwezi)

The Zambia Army through its Farms Branch is set to make a significant contribution to national food security with a projected harvest of over 350 metric tonnes of white maize in the 2025/26 farming season.

Speaking during the official launch of the harvest season at Solwezi Army Farm, Farms Branch Director General, Brigadier General Zephaniah Phiri attributed the projected increase to the Republican President and Commander-in-Chief’s directive for the Defence Force to play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s food security.

He emphasised that food security is a critical pillar of national security.

“This year’s projected output of over 350 metric tonnes marks a notable increase from the 238 metric tonnes recorded in the 2024/25 season. This growth reflects our commitment to responding to national food security needed,” Brig Gen Phiri said.

He recalled that during the 2024/25 season, the Solwezi Army Farm cultivated 100 hectares of white maize, which was increased to 150 hectares during the 2025/26 in an effort to enhance productivity.

In line with efforts to diversify production, Brig Gen Phiri disclosed that the farm also harvested approximately 5 metric tonnes of sweet beans during the season.

To ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness, the Farms Branch has engaged Zam Capito to provide harvesting equipment for this year’s crop marketing season.

Earlier, Brig Gen Phiri and his delegation held discussions with Food Reserve Agency North Western Regional Manager, Mr Dickson Musema on modalities for marketing the maize produced by the Zambia Army.

Also speaking at the event, Solwezi Farm Manager, Major Steven Simukonda noted that the farm has continued to record steady growth in cattle ranching, a development attributed to the importance that Command has placed on agricultural activities within the Army.

Maj Simukonda further revealed that the Directorate has already procured over 50% of farming inputs in preparation for the 2026/27 farming season.

The branch targets to cultivate 200 hectares, comprising 150 hectares of white maize and 50 hectares of sweet beans.

The aspiring Member of Parliament for Roan Constituency, Chishimba Kambwili has defended the Patriotic Front's record in government, saying its biggest shortcoming was caderism, not development.

Speaking at a Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance campaign rally in Luapula Province yesterday, Mr. Kambwili said the PF administration delivered on infrastructure and other development programmes, but acknowledged that caderism damaged the party's image.

"The PF government delivered. The only issue it had was caderism," Mr. Kambwili told supporters.

He said Brian Mundubile, the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance presidential candidate, has assured Zambians that caderism will not return if he is elected President.

According to Mr. Kambwili, the alliance is committed to providing leadership that promotes development while ensuring that the excesses associated with political cadres are not repeated.

The remarks come as political parties continue to campaign ahead of the 13 August General Election, with candidates outlining their plans and contrasting their records and visions for Zambia's future.

FRA READY FOR 2026 CROP MARKETING SEASON AS MAIZE HARVEST PROJECTED AT 5.1 MILLION METRIC TONNES

Today, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has completed preparations for the 2026 Crop Marketing Season and stands ready to commence the crop purchasing exercise once harvested maize attains the prescribed moisture content required for long term storage.

Highlights from the address by FRA Board Chairperson Hon. Suresh Desai:

✅Zambia is projected to record a historic maize harvest of 5.1 million metric tonnes during the 2025/2026 Agriculture Season, representing the highest maize production ever recorded in the country's history.

✅This anticipated output is expected to strengthen national food security and generate a significant surplus for export, providing a strong foundation for the successful implementation of the 2026 Crop Marketing Programme.

✅In readiness for the crop marketing exercise, the Food Reserve Agency has completed key operational preparations, including the establishment of 1,749 buying depot sites, the recruitment of 3,498 buying depot clerks and 3,498 security guards, as well as the distribution of grain bags and other marketing requisites to districts across the country.

✅With these preparations in place, the Agency stands ready to commence crop purchases once harvested maize attains the prescribed moisture content of 12.5 percent or below, in accordance with requirements for long term grain storage.

✅Meanwhile, the Agency is undertaking extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders to determine the 2026 buying prices for maize and rice, which will be announced upon conclusion of the consultation process.

✅To enhance efficiency in farmer payments during the 2026 Crop Marketing Season, the Agency has directed that all purchases of maize and paddy rice will be paid for through a digital online payment system.

✅Consequently, farmers intending to sell grain to the Food Reserve Agency are encouraged to submit their bank account or mobile money account details to FRA district offices to facilitate seamless digital payments.

✅The Agency further commended Government and stakeholders in the agriculture sector for initiating and implementing policy reforms that have contributed to increased agricultural production and the reduction in the prices of essential food commodities, including mealie meal.
