ZCTU SAYS NHIMA NOT FULLY BENEFITING WORKERS, CALLS FOR STRUCTURAL REFORMS.

By Osward Kafwanka

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concern that the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) is not adequately benefiting workers across the country.

ZCTU President Blake Mulala says the scheme is currently overburdened and lacks meaningful social dialogue between government and contributors, which he believes is affecting its efficiency and delivery of services.

Mr. Mulala has since recommended that government considers reverting NHIMA to the Ministry of Labour, arguing that the Ministry of Health is already overwhelmed by several challenges, including issues highlighted in Auditor General’s reports.

He has cited concerns over cases where non-accredited institutions allegedly accessed funds from the scheme under the previous administration.

He has further urged government to provide a dedicated budgetary allocation to NHIMA, saying this will improve its sustainability and ensure that workers fully benefit from the national health insurance system.

MOTORISTS BLAMED FOR DAMAGING K24M SOLAR STREETLIGHTS IN LIVINGSTONE.

By Kwalombota Mwanangombe

The Livingstone City Council (LCC) has expressed concern over the rising number of newly installed solar streetlights being knocked down by motorists in the tourist capital.

Council Public Relations Manager Melvin Mukela has revealed that four streetlights have so far been damaged, one installed under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) along Nyansa Road, and three others under the GREAT-TDP Project along Mosi-o-Tunya, Kafubu, and Airport roads.

Mr. Mukela notes that the streetlights were installed at significant cost, and their destruction is a setback to the city’s infrastructure development efforts.

He adds that the solar streetlight project was implemented at a total cost of K24 million, stressing that protecting the installations is crucial to allow the council to focus on other developmental priorities rather than repair works.

Mr. Mukela has since urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and observe road signs to help safeguard public infrastructure.
