Sean Tembo Writes;

RETIREMENT FROM ACTIVE POLITICS - MYSELF

Liberty House, 20th August 2026

1. After careful consideration and extensive consultations with family and friends, I have decided to retire from active politics with immediate effect.

2. Coincidentally, today marks exactly 10 years since I founded the Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP). Even though I did not succeed to be elected to any public office in the past 10 years, I stand proud of the political contributions that I have made thus far. Most notably, the annual PeP Alternative National Budgets, as well as extensive jurisprudence on political cases in the High Court and Constitutional Court of Zambia.

3. I am also grateful for the many friends and acquaintances that my political career allowed me to acquire, over the years. I am also thankful to those who believed in me and supported my political career over the years.

4. As I transition to a private life, I shall keep on praying for God the Almighty, to keep blessing our Nation, Zambia. Thank you.

ECONOMISTS FORESEE STRONGER KWACHA, RESERVES

Economist Roderick Chibuye says Zambia’s foreign reserves could double to about US$12.8 billion by 2031, following the re-election of the UPND administration.

Mr Chibuye says political stability, increased investor confidence and higher copper production could boost foreign exchange inflows. He adds that the Government’s target of producing three million tonnes of copper annually could further strengthen the economy.

He also expects the Kwacha to recover as investors release dollars held ahead of the August 13 elections.

Meanwhile, economist Emmanuel Mulao says the re-election provides policy continuity and predictability, which could attract more investment and support economic growth.

Both economists say increased investment and copper earnings could strengthen Zambia’s reserves and improve the country’s ability to withstand external economic shocks.

UPND Member Calls for Respect for Kafwaya’s Family

UPND member George Mtonga has called on fellow party members to set aside political differences and respect those mourning the death of former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya.

Mr Mtonga said the circumstances surrounding Mr Kafwaya’s death were not yet clear to the public, urging people to wait for leaders to provide information at the appropriate time.

He said those grieving knew Mr Kafwaya as more than a politician, as a father, husband, brother, and uncle.

Mr Mtonga urged UPND members to avoid making insensitive political comments while the family and friends were mourning.

He said politics should not take away from the pain of the bereaved and called for restraint, compassion, and respect.

He stressed that those mourning were grieving loved ones, not politicians, and deserved to have their pain respected regardless of Mr Kafwaya’s political involvement.

ZIMBA DENIES LEAKING INFORMATION LINKED TO KAFWAYA’S DE•ATH

Tonse Alliance Secretary General Dr Chris Zumani Zimba has dismissed allegations that he leaked information to State authorities about the whereabouts of alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile before a gunfire incident in which former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya was ki•lled.

Dr Zimba said he was deeply hurt by claims circulating among some PF Pamodzi diaspora bloggers, describing them as politically motivated and malicious.

“My heart bleeds with such inhuman malice, rehearsed enmity and political hatred towards me,” Dr Zimba said.

He said he and Kafwaya had been close friends and political allies since 2016, adding that the late lawmaker was also a brother in Christ.

“I had a cherished brother in politics and Christ in him,” he said.

Dr Zimba explained that on the evening of the incident, he was at Parliament House with Mr Mundubile’s sons and nephews and had no knowledge of where Mr Mundubile, Kafwaya and others were.

“We all had no idea where BM, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya and the team were,” he said.

According to Dr Zimba, his secretariat team had earlier been instructed by Mr Mundubile to ensure polling agents and monitors countrywide had physical proof of G20 forms.

He questioned why he was being accused of providing information to the State and called for sensitivity towards Kafwaya’s family as the country mourns.

“What is the motive? Is there anything we need to know as Tonse Alliance?” he asked.

Dr Zimba also defended his political record, saying his 2021 advice to former President Edgar Lungu to peacefully hand over power was aimed at preserving peace and national unity.

He said his recent call for dialogue and reconciliation between President Hakainde Hichilema and Mr Mundubile should not be construed as betrayal.

“Nothing will change that,” Dr Zimba said, insisting that his political positions were guided by facts and the national interest.

He paid tribute to Hon Kafwaya, describing him as a cherished brother and friend.

“May the Soul of Comrade and Brother, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya rest in eternal peace,” Dr Zimba said.

Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe writes;

The killing of Mutotwe Kafwaya is very frightening, very saddening, and it is very annoying. The news of his death has sent a cold chill down our spines and has deeply moved the leadership of the Socialist Party.

We send special condolences to his widow, children, family, and friends.

We also pay special tribute to his memory.

Unfortunately, the growing and unbridled political divisions and intolerance in our country's politics have led to this bloody drama. No doctrine, no election dispute, no principle, or proclaimed political position, and division in the nation can justify atrocious acts such as the physical elimination of Kafwaya and any other citizen who might have died with him. No crime can be committed in the name of elections or law enforcement.

Let a sense of sobriety, humanity and justice prevail in our hearts and in our homeland.

May Kafwaya’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Fred M’membe
President of the Socialist Party
