FARMER'S PAYMENT DELAY THREATENS FOOD SECURITY - GOBALZ
The Executive Director of Go Back to The Land Zambia (GOBALZ), Cyprian Chimwendo Phiri, has expressed concern that the delayed payment to farmers for their maize supplied to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in the 2024/2025 farming season is a setback to food security in the country.
Mr. Phiri notes that the demonstrations by farmers demanding payment are unfortunate and highlight the FRA's lack of preparedness and planning.
He urges the Minister of Agriculture to expedite the payment process, as promised, by October 31, 2025, to enable farmers to prepare for the next farming season.
The delay in payment has also been cited as a disincentive to youth participation in farming, Mr Phiri adds
Government had announced that farmers would be paid once funds from maize exports to Malawi are secured.
However, the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has urged the government to settle farmers who supplied maize to FRA by October 31, 2025.
