A woman of Ntindi Village in Nakonde District has died after she was allegedly attacked by a mob that later set her house on fire.

The deceased, identified as Martha Mulenga, died on September 1, 2026, around 07:00 hours at Nakonde Urban Health Centre, where she was receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Lubinda Mayamba has confirmed the incident, saying preliminary investigations indicate that a person fleeing from a mob sought refuge in Ms Mulenga’s house on August 30 around 19:00 hours.

According to Mr Mayamba, the mob followed the person to the house and allegedly demanded that Ms Mulenga disclose his whereabouts before attacking her with sticks, stones, kicks and burnt bricks. The mob is also alleged to have set the house on fire.

Ms Mulenga was rescued and rushed to a health facility, where she later died.

Her body has been deposited at the Nakonde Urban Health Centre mortuary pending a postmortem to establish the actual cause of death.

Commissioner Mayamba has condemned the incident and warned that police will not tolerate lawlessness, urging members of the public to allow the law to take its course.

He says those found responsible will be brought before the courts of law as investigations continue.

Mwenzo MP-Elect Luka Simumba Charged With Sedition

DMTV News

Newly elected Mwenzo Member of Parliament and former Nakonde MP Luka Simumba has been charged with seditious practices, the Zambia Police Service has confirmed.

Simumba was arrested on August 16, 2026, two days after winning the Mwenzo parliamentary seat, alongside two other people from Nakonde, including his driver.

The three were later formally charged and transferred from Chinsali to Lusaka.

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi has confirmed that Simumba is facing a charge of seditious practices but has not disclosed the specific allegations against him. The charge facing the other two suspects has also not been disclosed.

Attempts to obtain further details from Police Headquarters and comment from Simumba’s lawyers have so far been unsuccessful.

Seditious practices are provided for under Section 57 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, and generally cover conduct deemed to promote hatred or disaffection against the Government, violence, public disorder or hostility among groups.

The law, however, provides that lawful criticism of Government aimed at pointing out errors or seeking reform does not, by itself, amount to a seditious intention.
