IBA ISSUES FINAL WARNING TO BROADCASTERS AHEAD OF ELECTION DAY
The Independent Broadcasting Authority has reminded all TV, radio and online broadcasters of their obligations under the 2026 Election Coverage Guidelines ahead of Zambia's General Elections on 13th-August 2026.
Speaking on Tuesday, 11th August 2026, IBA Director General Mr. Webster Malido said broadcasters must ensure that their coverage is accurate, balanced, fair and responsible at all times.
The Authority has warned that on polling day, stations must not air campaign interviews featuring political parties or independent candidates. Broadcasters are also not allowed to make predictions of election outcomes or announce results that have not been officially released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia. Only ECZ is mandated to announce official results.
IBA further reminded Broadcasters that no new opinion polls results should be broadcast before are aired within the permitted period, stations must disclose full details including the source, sponsor, date, samples size and margin of error.
The Authority has also urged broadcasters to avoid hate speech, tribalism, violence and the spread of misinformation, especially from social media or unverified sources. All coverage must be fair and give all political parties and candidates a reasonable opportunity to communicate with the public.
IBA said it will continue monitoring all broadcasts throughout the electoral period and will take appropriate action against any station found in breach of the Guidelines. Members of the public with complaints have been advised to first report to the station concerned, and can escalate the matter to IBA if it is not resolved within two days.
The Authority has called on all media to play their role in promoting peace and a credible electoral process.
