A National Disaster Is Upon Us.
Zambia's President, Hakainde Hichilema, declared a national disaster and emergency due to severe drought caused by El Niño weather conditions and exacerbated by climate change.
The drought, affecting 84 districts, poses significant threats to agriculture, water availability, and energy supply, risking food security and livelihoods. Approximately 1 million hectares of maize fields have been destroyed, with projections indicating prolonged dry spells continuing into March 2024, affecting over 1 million farming households. Urgent short-term measures include humanitarian relief, importing electricity, and promoting alternative energy sources, while longer-term strategies focus on water harvesting and agricultural loans. International support from partners like the UK, UN, and World Bank is crucial. The government calls for unity and solidarity to overcome the crisis, acknowledging the resilience of farmers and urging collaboration among stakeholders.
A multidisciplinary team will be formed to respond comprehensively to the disaster.
