The U.S. government has ordered the immediate withdrawal of all its personnel from Kitwe and surrounding areas affected by the toxic mine tailings spill at Sino Metals’ Leach Mine in Chambishi.
According to newly released information posted on their page, the spill has introduced hazardous and carcinogenic substances such as arsenic, cyanide, uranium, and other heavy metals into the environment, posing both immediate and long-term health risks.
Authorities have warned that the contamination goes beyond water and soil, with potential for harmful particles to become airborne and be inhaled, increasing the danger to public health.
As a result, U.S. personnel have been evacuated from Chambishi town, all locations along the Chambishi Stream and Mwambashi River up to the Mwambashi-Kafue confluence, and Kitwe town itself.
Further, U.S. staff have been instructed to avoid any travel to Kitwe that would require consumption of municipally sourced water or food prepared with it.
In an official advisory, the U.S. Embassy has urged all U.S. citizens in the affected areas particularly near the Sino Metals mine and downstream communities to exercise caution and avoid exposure to contaminated water and food.
