CHIKANKATA COUNCIL LAUNCHES NEW SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

By Hope Chooma

Chikankata Town Council has officially handed over the first ever boarding facilities at Chikani Secondary School.

The handover took place Thursday morning and included two dormitories—one for girls and one for boys.

Along with the boarding facilities, 110 mattresses worth K145,000 were also donated to the school.

The dormitories were constructed at a cost of over three million kwacha.

In addition, the council handed over a water reticulation system at Munali, and new classroom blocks at three primary schools—Kalundu, Nameembo, and Turnpike Community School.

All these projects were funded through the Constituency Development Fund, or CDF.

Honourable Jacqueline Sabao, the area Member of Parliament, was the guest of honor during the event held at Chikani Secondary School.

She said the new boarding facilities will provide much-needed accommodation for learners, especially those coming from outside the area.

Hon Sabao also noted that the new classrooms will help reduce overcrowding in the mentioned schools.

Meanwhile, Chikankata District Commissioner Timothy Chipolyonga welcomed the boarding facility, saying learners will no longer have to travel long distances to access boarding schools.

The District Education Board Secretary, Lizzy Nyoni, expressed gratitude for the new facilities, saying they will greatly improve the learning environment for both pupils and students.

The event was also attended by the Council Secretary, the CDF Chairperson, the area Councilor, and other government officials.

MAZABUKA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL COMMISSIONS KANGILA MATERNITY ANNEX IN CHIZOBO WARD

By Innocent Chikwala

Mazabuka Municipal Council has commissioned the Kangila Maternity Annex in Chizobo Ward. The facility was constructed using funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

During the handover ceremony today, Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Gary Nkombo, emphasized the government’s commitment to bringing health services closer to the people. He explained that the new maternity annex will benefit residents who previously traveled long distances to access healthcare.

Hon. Nkombo encouraged all pregnant and expecting mothers to use the facility and avoid delivering babies at home. He revealed that the annex was built at a cost of one million three hundred thousand kwacha (1,300,000) under the Constituency Development Fund.

Mazabuka District Commissioner Oliver Mulomba described the maternity annex as a clear sign of the government’s dedication to improving healthcare access. He said the days of home deliveries are over, and this facility will positively impact the lives of residents. He urged expecting mothers to stop delivering at home, highlighting the safety risks involved.

Meanwhile, Chizobo Ward Councillor Severino Habeenzu thanked the government for building the maternity annex. He pointed out that residents had been traveling approximately 10 kilometers to access health services in the past. The new facility has brought joy to the community, as residents no longer have to cover such long distances for medical care.

FDD SLAMS UPND OVER MINING CONCESSIONS

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has expressed deep concern over the United Party for National Development (UPND) government's handling of mining concessions, accusing the party of favoring foreign investors at the expense of Zambians.

The FDD alleges that the UPND has given away mining concessions without parliamentary approval, citing the return of Konkola Copper Mine to Vedanta Resources and a $1 billion upfront payment from Royal Gold to First Quantum Minerals for gold deliveries from copper production at Kansanshi Mine.

The party claims that this is a form of neocolonialism, where Zambia's rich resources are being exploited while the country is burdened with debt and heavy taxes. The FDD argues that the UPND's policies have failed to benefit Zambians, with towns like Mufumbwe, Kasempa, and Kalumbila lagging behind in development despite hosting precious minerals.

The FDD is calling for the renegotiation of mining agreements and strict measures in the issuance of mining licenses to ensure that Zambia's mineral wealth benefits its people. They promise to use mineral resources to free Zambia from debt and reintroduce subsidies in agriculture, energy, and health if they come into power.

The party criticizes the UPND's reliance on IMF programs, which have stressed the country's economy, and accuses them of prioritizing foreign mining companies over Zambians, who are heavily burdened with taxes and struggling to afford essential commodities.

This is contained in a statement issued by FDD spokesperson Anthony Chibuye.

FDD SLAMS UPND OVER ALLEGATIONS of INSTITUTIONALIZED CADERISM

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has strongly criticized the United Party for National Development (UPND) government, led by President Hakainde Hichilema, over allegations of institutionalized caderism. The FDD claims that the UPND has taken caderism to new heights by appointing party loyalists to key positions and institutions.

According to the FDD, the UPND's caderism has been institutionalized, with party cadres occupying key positions in institutions such as the judiciary, police, and Electoral Commission of Zambia. The FDD cited examples of alleged UPND cadres in key positions, including Mr. Mulilo Kabesha, Nellie Mutti, Mwangala Zaloumis, and Commissioners like Macdonald Chipenzi.

The FDD alleges that the institutionalization of caderism has led to corruption and compromised the ability of institutions to serve the public interest. They claim that President Hichilema is using his cadres to silence Zambians and position himself to rig the 2026 elections.

The FDD warned that if the UPND is given another term, the country will be irreparably damaged. They expressed disappointment that President Hichilema seems to think he will be president forever and is taking steps to ensure he remains in power, including allegedly using his cadres to jail opponents.

This is contained in a statement issued by FDD spokesperson Anthony Chibuye.

CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS EXPRESS DISAPPOINTMENT OVER CONSTITUTIONAL COURT PROCEEDINGS

By Hope Chooma

Civil society organisations have raised alarm over the conduct of the Constitutional Court, following the withdrawal of a key petition on constitutional amendments.

The Consortium of Civil Society Organisations on Governance says the decision to discontinue the case, after allegations of bias by a judge, has left crucial constitutional questions unanswered — particularly whether all amendments require a technical committee.

The group says the environment in chambers made it impossible for petitioner Isaac Mwanza to receive a fair hearing.

They’ve expressed concern that the court appears defensive when its decisions are challenged, reminding the judiciary that no arm of government stands above the Constitution.

The Consortium also pointed to past instances where the court corrected itself, such as in the case involving former President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility to recontest.

They’ve called on judges to uphold the highest standards of integrity and avoid any conduct that could intimidate litigants or undermine public trust.

The statement was issued by Solomon Ngoma, Deputy Chairperson of the Consortium.

MAZABUKA SETTLERS BLOCK TIPPER TRUCK OVER GRAZING LAND DISPUTE

Settlers of the RR Settlement in Nega Nega Ward, Mazabuka District, on Monday morning blocked a tipper truck belonging to a nearby farm owner in protest over an alleged attempt to seize their communal grazing land.

The truck, reportedly sent by an Indian national who owns a neighboring farm, was stopped by the settlers who accused him of trying to demarcate and take over land that has been used by the community since 1991. The land is officially recognized and gazetted by the government.

Settlement Chairperson Fred Mutabali said the settlers would not allow the farm owner to occupy land that does not belong to him.

He added that officials from the Ministry of Lands recently visited the area to confirm plans to permanently allocate the land to the settlers.

Mutabali has since called on the government to act swiftly, warning that tensions are rising and settlers are growing increasingly frustrated.

CITIZENS FIRST PARTY YOUTH WING DEMANDS ACTION ON CDF LOAN DEFAULTERS

The Citizens First Party Youth Wing in Southern Province is demanding that action be taken against individuals who have failed to repay their Constituency Development Fund (CDF) loans. The party warns that if no action is taken, they will stage a protest to bring attention to the issue.

The CDF loans were allegedly given selectively to suspected UPND cadres, who have since failed to pay back the loans. This has led to the suspension of CDF loans by the Ministry of Local Government.

The Citizens First Party Youth Wing argues that it is unfair for the UPND administration to write off CDF loans when there are alternative ways to recover the public funds. They emphasize that public funds are not party funds and demand that the money be paid back.

The party has given the government a 14-day ultimatum to take action, failing which they will take to the streets to protest. The party's Provincial Youth Chairman, Hancheka Savewell, has stated that the people of Zambia want the money to be paid back.

The Citizens First Party Youth Wing questions the Minister of Local Government's ability to take action against CDF loan defaulters, many of whom are UPND cadres, given his affiliation to the same party.
