13-Kilometre Queue of Trucks at Nakonde Border as Crossing into Tanzania Begins

A long queue of trucks stretching about 13 kilometres has formed at the Nakonde–Tunduma border as drivers begin crossing into Tanzania after being stuck for three days.

The trucks have been in Nakonde since Wednesday when Tanzania went to the polls.

Because of tension and incidents of violence reported in cities such as Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, movement across the border was restricted.

Many trucks were parked in truck parks around Nakonde, which quickly became full.

A Check by Chete Fm News on Saturday evening, a long line had formed along the Great North Road, stretching from the new Council Truck Park to customs, a distance of about 13 kilometres.

Another queue has formed from Matipa, about 10 kilometres along the Nakonde–Mbala Road, joining the main line at the old security checkpoint in Wulongo.

Together, the two lines make up a much longer stretch of trucks waiting to cross into Tanzania.

It is not only trucks that were affected, buses from as far as Lubumbashi in the DRC and from Zimbabwe were also stuck in Nakonde for several days.

Border movement has now started, and some trucks have begun crossing into Tanzania.

A few shops in Nakonde’s black market opened on Saturday, though most closed by 16:00 hours because of a night curfew still in effect on the Tanzanian side.

With President Samia Suluhu Hassan declared the winner of the election, business is slowly returning to normal, and traffic at the border is beginning to flow again.

Twenty-two passengers have sustained serious injuries when a Fuso Fighter truck carrying 68 people overturned near the Skills Center area along the Mwaba–Skills road in Chinsali District on Saturday afternoon, police say.

The accident, which occurred around 13:30 hours, involved a Fuso Fighter registration number ALT 5253 that was being driven by Goldon Chinunka, aged 36, of Mayard Compound in Chinsali.

Police say the vehicle was traveling from west to east when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed, causing it to overturn on the left side of the road, the driver escaped unhurt.

Among the 68 passengers on board, 22 sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Chinsali District Hospital in stable condition, while nine others suffered minor injuries and were treated as outpatients.

The remaining thirty-seven passengers escaped unhurt.

Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Dennis Moola confirmed the accident in an interview with Chete FM News in Nakonde, saying the motor vehicle has since been impounded and parked at Chinsali Central Police Station.

UPDATED: Nakonde DC Apologizes for Wrong Figures — Only Two Dead, Both Tanzanian, Not Nine as Earlier Reported

Nakonde District Commissioner (DC) Marvelous Sikapizye has apologized to the nation after earlier announcing that nine people had died from gunshot wounds at Nakonde District Hospital amid cross-border tension with Tanzania.

Following verification, authorities have confirmed that only two people died — both Tanzanian nationals. One died on Wednesday and was taken to Urban Clinic as “brought in dead” (BID), while the second passed away today at the district hospital.

DC Sikapizye, who had earlier given the incorrect figures during a live broadcast on Chete FM News, expressed regret for the misinformation and thanked the public for their patience as accurate details emerged.

Meanwhile, business in Nakonde and Tunduma is slowly returning to normal.

Tanzanian truck drivers who had been stranded in Tunduma since Wednesday have now been cleared to cross into Zambia up to 19:00 hours, following successful engagements between authorities on both sides of the border.

BREAKING NEWS🛑 Two Dead in Nakonde from Stray Bullets Amid Tanzanian Tension — DC Apologizes for Earlier Wrong Figures

By Gladwell Simwawa

Two people have died in Nakonde District, both from gunshot wounds, as tensions escalate across the nearby Tanzanian border.

Earlier reports indicated nine deaths, but Nakonde District Commissioner (DC) Marvelous Sikapizye has since apologized, clarifying that only two fatalities have been confirmed after verification, both Tanzanian nationals.

One of the victims died on Wednesday and was taken to Urban Clinic as “brought in dead” (BID), while the second passed away today at Nakonde District Hospital.

The unrest in Tanzania, which has sparked the cross-border tension, is reportedly linked to political disputes and accusations against President Samia’s administration.

The situation has disrupted daily life on both sides of the border.
In Tunduma, Tanzania, shops had closed earlier, and no vehicles were crossing into Zambia. Only authorized security personnel were seen moving along the streets as residents were urged to stay indoors and avoid gatherings.

Stray bullets have also caused property damage on Friday alone, one hit a house in Katozi village and another struck a ZESCO power transformer.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from those incidents.

Meanwhile, normalcy is gradually returning. Tanzanian truck drivers who had been stranded in Tunduma since Wednesday have now been cleared to cross into Zambia up to 19:00 hours, following successful engagements between authorities from both sides of the border.

Stray Bullet from Tunduma Hits House in Nakonde Family Narrowly Escapes Injury

By Joy Mwale

A family in Nakonde District has narrowly escaped injury after a stray bullet believed to have come from Tunduma in Tanzania struck the roof of their house on Friday morning

The bullet hit the home of 40-year-old businessman Damas Sichula of Katozi Village, just a short distance from the Tanzania–Zambia border.

When Chete FM reporter Joy Mwale visited the family in Katozi on Friday morning, she found that the bullet had pierced through the iron roof and landed on the cement floor, leaving a hole and shocking everyone inside.

Mr. Sichula’s nephew, 22-year-old Wilson Mwamba, told Chete FM that he was inside the house with five other family members, including a 3-month-old baby, when they heard several gunshots from the Tanzanian town of Tunduma, only about 100 meters away.

“A few seconds later, we heard a loud bang on the roof,” said Mr. Mwamba. “When we checked, we found a bullet on the floor. We were all very scared.”

Police later visited the scene, collected the bullet for investigation, and advised residents to remain calm.

Mr. Sichula, who was at work in Isoka when the incident happened, said he was thankful no one was hurt but worried about the family’s safety.

Residents of Katozi Village say they are living in fear, especially after reports of unrest in Tunduma linked to Tanzania’s general elections held on October 29, 2025.

Many are calling for stronger border security to protect people on the Zambian side.

Experts say that a bullet can travel very far depending on the gun and the angle it’s fired at

If a bullet is shot almost straight, it can go 1 to 4 kilometers before slowing down and falling.

If it’s shot high into the air, it can go up and then fall back down, sometimes landing several kilometers away from where it was fired.

Even when falling, a bullet can still be moving at about 100 to 200 meters per second (that’s 360–720 km/h), fast enough to hurt or kill someone.

That means a bullet fired in one town like Tunduma could possibly land in another nearby town like Nakonde especially since the two are so close together.

Tanzanian Elections

This is the Cartridge from a Stray Bullet that Struck a ZESCO Transformer in Nakonde on the Zambian Side from Tunduma, Tanzania

A bullet cartridge suspected to have come from Tanzania was found approximately eight meters from the damaged ZESCO transformer in Nakonde, on the Zambian side of the border.

The cartridge was discovered lying on the ground beneath the transformer by residents and confirmed by a Chete FM news crew that visited the scene.

Preliminary observations suggest the cartridge belongs to a rifle-type firearm, likely fired from a long-range distance across the border in Tunduma, Tanzania.

It is suspected to be one of several stray bullets discharged as gunfire continued on the Tanzanian side amid post-election unrest.

The damaged unit is a 200 KVA, 11/0.4 KV distribution transformer owned by ZESCO Limited.

It is mounted on a steel structure approximately 8 meters above the ground.

The transformer’s cooling fins, designed to increase the surface area for heat dissipation, were perforated in three places by the bullet.

The impact caused transformer oil to leak to the ground, posing both a fire risk and environmental hazard.

The transformer supplies electricity to commercial establishments around Powertools, as well as residential areas in Katozi Township.

Power supply in the affected areas has been cut off while ZESCO engineers conduct damage assessment and oil containment.

Stray Bullet from Tanzania Damages ZESCO Transformer in Nakonde as Tension Spills Across Border

By Christabel Chulu

Two days after voting in Tanzania, rising post-election tension in the neighboring country has begun to affect life on the Zambian side of the border, with a ZESCO transformer in Nakonde damaged by a suspected stray bullet.

The incident happened near Kasama–Kasama station area in Nakonde, close to Amico, about 300 meters from the Zambia–Tanzania buffer zone.

The 200KVA, 11/0.4KV transformer, which supplies power to several commercial outlets, including Powertools, and residential areas in Katozi has been perforated on three fins, causing oil to spill to the ground.

The transformer stands about eight meters high.

When the Chete FM news crew arrived at the scene, transformer oil was still leaking, and gunshots could still be heard from across the border.

Fortunately, ZESCO immediately rushed to isolate the transformer to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.

A cartridge was also found on the ground about eight meters from the transformer, believed to be linked to the gunfire from the Tanzanian side.

Local trader David Bwalya, who witnessed the incident, has told Chete.FM News that he saw several people running from the buffer zone just before hearing a loud gunshot.

“Before we knew it, the bullet hit the transformer, we are sure it came from the Tanzanian side, if it had not struck the transformer, we do not know what could have happened,” he said.

Mr Bwalya has expressed fear over the escalating situation and concern for residents and traders operating near the border.

Power has since been cut off in parts of Nakonde as ZESCO works to assess and repair the damage.

The development comes amid growing unrest in Tanzania following Wednesday’s general election.

Reports indicate that tension remains high in towns such as Dodoma, Dar es Salaam.

A check at Tunduma this morning found shops closed and a curfew is in effect.

Supporters of opposition figures have accused President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government of suppressing democracy by barring key opponents from contesting the election.

Tundu Lissu, one of the strongest opposition figures, has reportedly been detained on treason charges, while another prominent rival was disqualified from participating.

At least one police officer and a civilian have reportedly been killed in the ensuing violence.
Meanwhile, traffic at the Tunduma–Nakonde border has come to a standstill, with trucks unable to cross as tension persists.

In a separate incident along the Malawi–Tanzania–Zambia border area, three people, including a Zambian were shot and injured by suspected Tanzanian police on Wednesday.

The victims are currently receiving treatment at Nakonde District Hospital.

Local authorities in Nakonde have urged residents to remain calm and avoid border areas until stability returns to the neighboring country.

INTRODUCING CHETE 89.9FM TO YOU.

CHETE 89.9FM is the first and only radio station based in Nakonde. It is the brainchild of a group of serious yet fun youths. Our name is derived from the phrase “ndi chete” which in Namwanga (the language of the district) means “I am fine”. We don’t mean to brag but, yes, we are a fine station.

The idea for a radio station in Nakonde was borne out of the need to fill the gap of there being no local source of audio information, education and entertainment in the border town. Nakonde is the busiest border town in Zambia and it facilitates trade links between Zambia and East Africa.

Our radio station is hyper-local. Hyper-localism to us means having an unyielding focus on local content and talent, promotions and community engagement.

CHETE 89.9FM is committed to its listeners, partners, customers and employees by way of supplying services and products that are reliable and fit for the purpose of achieving stakeholder satisfaction.
