Tithe is one of the most debated topics in church and at home.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, 𝟏𝟎% 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐣𝐨𝐲. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟎% 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭.

The truth is, many people feel poorer not because of the 10% they give, but because of how they handle the 90% that remains.

1. 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄

Tithe is the first 10% of your increase. The purpose is to support ministry, care for the needy, and teach dependence on God.

Tithe is never meant to be transactional — “I give God 10% and God must pay me back 10 times more.”

𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. 𝐈𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬.

2. 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋 𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐑

a. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐰 –

If 90% doesn’t cover rent, food, and transport, then 10% will feel like a crisis.

The issue is cost of living, not tithe.

b. 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 –

Many tithe faithfully but still borrow for data, take unnecessary loans and spend without a budget.

Tithe didn’t create the debt.

3. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝟗𝟎% 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐒 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇

𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟗𝟎%.

If the 90% goes to impulse buying, alcohol, consumption, debt, or keeping up appearances, then no blessing can catch up.

𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟎% 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟗𝟎% 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩.

Budgeting, saving, and investing the 90% is also part of honouring God. It’s not just about giving — it’s about managing.

𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓

𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫. 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭, 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟗𝟎% 𝐚𝐫𝐞.

But 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞. I’ve seen 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲. I’ve heard chairpersons come on payout day with a story that “𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 money.”

𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 any village banking group, 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 4 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬:

When both husband and wife are working, the question always comes up: How do we share the financial responsibility in our home?

Money can either unite you or become your biggest source of stress.

The difference is the system you agree on.

Here are the 3 most common approaches:

This is the “default” in many homes. Both partners are working, but one person is still expected to handle almost everything financially.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞: It can become very transactional — “I paid my 60%, so the rest is not my problem.” It also gets messy with savings and emergencies.
Without regular communication, this model can create distance instead of teamwork.

Making your monthly debt payments doesn’t always mean you’re making real progress.

Many people are doing "everything right" on paper, yet still remain trapped in debt for years.

If your goal is 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦, here are 5 mistakes to avoid:

1. 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐎 𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘 𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐃
Putting every available kwacha towards debt feels productive... until an unexpected expense hits. A broken fridge, medical bill or car repair can force you to borrow all over again.

𝐅𝐈𝐗: While repaying debt, also build an emergency fund. 𝐀𝐢𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 3–6 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 to protect your progress.

Ignoring calls, emails, or letters will not make the debt disappear. It often leads to penalties, higher interest, and fewer options.

5. 𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐃𝐄𝐁𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐏𝐀𝐘 𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐁𝐓
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞: Taking another loan to pay off the first loan. Borrowing from one bank or person to pay another.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬: This is called 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞. You’re not solving the problem, you’re moving it with more fees.

𝐅𝐈𝐗: 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧. List debts smallest to largest and attack one at a time. Talk to your lender — most will restructure if you’re honest.
