LUNDAZI DISTRICT COMMISSIONER EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT WITH BUSINESS ASSOCIATION'S CONTRIBUTION TO KULONGA TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

The Lundazi District Commissioner, Madam Majory Mupashya Banda DC- Lundazi Districtda, has expressed disappointment with the Lundazi District Business Association's contribution toward this year's Kulonga Traditional Ceremony. Despite the association's significant business operations in the area, they only tabled a K3,000 towards the ceremony.

Speaking at a meeting to finalize preparations for the Kulonga Traditional Ceremony, The DC lamented that the business community seems to prioritize donating to other traditional ceremonies while neglecting their own. "When other traditional ceremonies are happening, people here become the first ones to donate, but they are forgetting their own traditional ceremony that is happening within here," she said.

the DC emphasized that the business community benefits significantly from operating in the area throughout the year but fails to appreciate the traditional leadership and contribute meaningfully to the Kulonga Traditional Ceremony. "We are making a lot of money throughout the year, but we are just failing to appreciate the owner of the land, the chief, for just a small contribution towards the traditional ceremony that happens just once a year," she added.

The Kulonga Traditional Ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2025, with the climax on August 9th.

LUNDAZI MAN DROWNS IN LUWEREZI DAM

A man believed to have been suffering from epilepsy has drowned in Chasefu's Luwerezi dam.

Boyd Nkhata 51, of Zgozi compound also of Maiwako village in chief Magodi's area in Chasefu district of Eastern Province, allegedly died by drowning yesterday between 11:00 hours and 17:00 hours.

Mr Nkhata who is reported to have been experiencing frequent epileptic seizures is alleged to have gone to take a bath in Luwerezi dam.

"The now deceased told his grandchildren around 11:00 hours on Wednesday, July 30, that he was going to take a bath at the dam and never returned and his body was found floating in the dam around 17:00 hours on the same day," East Police Chief told ZANIS in Lundazi.

His half-dressed body was discovered by some children who had also gone to take a bath at the same place, while his undergarments were found on the banks of the dam.

Police say the body had no visible injuries and suspect that the deceased could have suffered an epileptic attack and fell into the water as he was preparing to take a bath.

The body of the deceased is lying in Chasefu mini hospital mortuary awaiting possible examination and burial.

YOMAPS SEEKS PRIMARY CUSTODY OF CHILD BUKATA

Zambian singer Elton Mulenga, popularly known as Yo Maps, has applied to the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court seeking primary custody of his daughter, Bukata.

He told the court that he would be more than willing to raise her in the same way he and his wife, Kiddist Kiffle, are raising her half-sister at home, as he has consistently taken responsibility for Bukata’s well-being.

Yo Maps stated that on several occasions, he has asked to spend time with his daughter , whether during holidays, weekends, or events but Prudence Nakamba, also known as Mwizukanji, has repeatedly refused without giving any valid reason.

Mr. Mulenga has submitted WhatsApp conversations as evidence to support his claim.

Meanwhile, his wife, Kiddist Kiffle, told the court that he has been a responsible father, adding that she assists him in ensuring that all maintenance payments, school fees, and other expenses related to the child are settled on time.

TAZARA SUES LIKILI OVER RAIL CROSSING ACCIDENT

Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority has sued Likili Motorways Limited seeking over K2 million compensation after the company's bus caused an accident after failing to give way at a railway level crossing.

The freight and passenger services firm seeks payment of a total of K2,925,137.31 and an additional US$698.316, in full cost of replacement of the damaged wagon and repair of the damaged locomotives.

TAZARA also seeks payment of damages for breach of statutory duty.

In a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, TAZARA, which operates as a railway company in both Zambia and Tanzania, has cited Likili Motorways Limited as defendant.

The plaintiff submits that on July 2, 2023, its train number M22 departed from Kapiri Mposhi train station about 12:38 hours.

“Approximately at 13:09 hours, the plaintiff’s train was approaching the highway level crossing between Mpika and Sabwa Kabila section, the train collided with the defendant's bus ,” the document reads.

Former Petauke District Commissioner, Velenasi Moyo, has been sentenced to five months simple imprisonment for abuse of office.

According to court records, the offence occurred between 1st August and 30th September 2020, when Moyo, while serving as Petauke District Commissioner, directed National Registration Officers to issue National Registration Cards (NRCs) to children below the age of sixteen.

The court found this to be an arbitrary act, prejudicial to the interests of the government.

Moyo, who served as District Commissioner from 2014 to 2021, was initially jointly charged with Goodson Lungu, former Patriotic Front Constituency Chairman, on four counts of wilful obstruction of the Registrar and four counts of issuing false statements for the registration of births, dates, and marriage certificates. The duo was acquitted of those eight charges.

However, in a judgment delivered today, Petauke Resident Magistrate Ackson Mumba, convicted Moyo on the abuse of office charge and sentenced her to five months simple imprisonment.

Lundazi, July 30, 2025 – The Lundazi Town Council convened a in an ordinary full council meeting today, uniting key stakeholders to address pressing issues impacting the district's growth and wellbeing.

Led by Council Chairperson Golden Tembo, the gathering included the District Commissioner, Council Secretary, councillors, royal highnesses, and community members.

In his address, Mr. Tembo emphasized the importance of leveraging the Constituency Development Fund and exploring innovative revenue streams, referencing President Hakainde Hichilema's keynote speech at the Local Government Association of Zambia. "As local authorities, you play a vital role in shaping our district's future towards a prosperous nation," he urged attendees.

The council has made notable strides in various sectors, particularly with the construction of the National Assembly office, which has received positive feedback from the Committee on Local Government Accounts. Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Nelly Mutti, has reaffirmed the pivotal role of parliaments as architects of dialogue, justice, and inclusive development both within national borders and across the global stage.

Speaking at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, Ms. Mutti highlighted Zambia’s strategic use of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to empower communities and promote social and economic justice.

She noted that the decentralised nature of the CDF has enabled local communities to take ownership of developmental projects and manage financial resources directly.

Ms. Mutti further emphasized Zambia’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, particularly in advancing climate resilience and public health.
