KAPIRI MAN JAILED SIX WEEKS FOR MAIZE THEFT

Kapiri Mposhi Resident Magistrate Mutete Chizawu has sentenced a 30-year-old man to six weeks simple imprisonment for stealing 21 by 50-kilogram bags of maize.

The court heard that the convict was apprehended after stealing the maize, which was later fully recovered. During trial, the prosecution stressed the seriousness of the offence, highlighting maize as a vital commodity for household food security and the broader agricultural economy.

In delivering judgment, Magistrate Chizawu acknowledged the seriousness of the crime but also weighed mitigating circumstances, including the recovery of the stolen bags and the offender’s cooperation with law enforcement.

“Theft of farm produce is a serious offence that threatens the livelihood of many people. However, the court also has a duty to exercise fairness where recovery is made,” Magistrate Chizawu said.

The six-week custodial sentence, the magistrate explained, was meant to punish the offender, deter would-be criminals, and provide the convict with an opportunity to reform. The ruling has since been viewed as a stern warning to the community against theft of agricultural produce, a problem that has become increasingly common during harvest seasons.

KAPIRI MPOSHI MAN JAILED FIVE YEARS FOR VICIOUSLY ASSAULTING SCHOOLBOY.

The Kapiri Mposhi Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man of Soweto Compound to five years imprisonment for viciously assaulting a 13-year-old schoolboy.

The convict, Levy Chuungwe, was found guilty of assault on a child, contrary to Section 248A of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The court heard that on January 31, 2025, around 19:30 hours, the victim, Pascal Mulumbwa, was returning home from a friend’s house when Chuungwe launched an unprovoked attack. In his testimony, the boy explained how the accused accused him of “searching people’s money,” before violently grabbing him and striking him on the head with a bottle. The assault left him with a deep cut and severe body pains.

Despite bleeding, Pascal managed to stagger home, where his mother, Theresa Mudenda, rushed him to seek help. The matter was reported to TAZARA Police Station on February 3, 2025, leading to Chuungwe’s arrest. Both the victim’s mother and the arresting officer gave testimony that strengthened the prosecution’s case.

In delivering judgment, Resident Magistrate Mutete Chizawu condemned the attack as a barbaric act against a child, handing down a five-year custodial sentence. The ruling has been welcomed by the community as a stern warning against the increasing cases of violence targeting children in Kapiri Mposhi.

HH CONFIRMS NEW DRY PORT FOR KAPIRI MPOSHI AND MAJOR RAIL INVESTMENT FOR TAZARA.

President Hakainde Hichilema has confirmed that government will establish a new dry port in Kapiri Mposhi, a move expected to transform the town into a critical regional trade hub. The development is part of a wider plan to enhance Zambia’s transport infrastructure and strengthen its position as a land-linked nation.

In addition, the Head of State announced a huge investment in the new railway track for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA). The investment aims to modernize operations, improve cargo movement, and boost trade efficiency between Zambia and Tanzania.

The President emphasized that the project will not only ease the flow of goods but also create thousands of jobs for local communities, stimulate economic activities, and attract more investors to the central corridor.

The confirmation of these initiatives highlights government’s commitment to reviving railway transport, reducing dependence on road haulage, and lowering the cost of doing business across the region.

Kapiri Mposhi Court Sends Juvenile Offender to Reformatory School Over Ma*****na Trafficking

The Kapiri Mposhi Magistrates’ Court has committed a juvenile offender to Katombora Reformatory School for a period of two years after he was found guilty of unlawful trafficking in ma*****na.

Appearing before Magistrate Jammy Mukumbi were Jimmy Zulu and Comfort Lombe, both of Matilyo compound, who stood jointly charged with one count of trafficking in drugs, contrary to Section 15 (1) and (2) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021, as read with Statutory Instrument No. 119 of 1995 of the Laws of Zambia.

The court heard that on April 17, 2025, in Kapiri Mposhi district of Central Province, the duo, acting together, trafficked in 105 grams of ma*****na, a herbal product of Cannabis Sativa (Indian h**p), without lawful authority.

The prosecution successfully proved the case, leading to a conviction. In mitigation, Zulu and Lombe pleaded for leniency, expressing remorse and stating their willingness to return to school.

In passing judgment, Magistrate Mukumbi committed Jimmy Zulu to Katombora Reformatory School for 24 months, while Comfort Lombe was placed on a 12-month probation order, to be supervised by the Social Welfare Department.

Plastic Pollution in Kapiri Mposhi Raises Community Concerns

Plastic pollution in Kapiri Mposhi has once again sparked concern among residents, with calls growing louder for the local authority to take decisive action. Many community members have urged the council to consider passing strict by-laws aimed at tackling the escalating environmental challenge.

Residents stress that a collective approach is urgently needed if the district is to safeguard its environment and ensure a healthier future for all. They argue that without active participation from both the community and local authorities, the problem will continue to worsen.

“We need stronger measures in place to manage waste properly,” “Everyone must play a role, but the council should lead by example through policies and enforcement.”

The plea comes as piles of plastic waste continue to accumulate in different parts of the district, raising fears of long-term environmental and health risks. Residents believe that stakeholders must step up efforts, ranging from awareness campaigns to waste management initiatives, if sustainable solutions are to be achieved.

While the local authority has previously acknowledged the problem, residents are hopeful that stronger policies and practical action will be put in place to restore cleanliness and promote environmental responsibility in Kapiri Mposhi.

KAPIRI MPOSHI TOWN COUNCIL BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF WORLD BANK-FUNDED TRUCK PARK

Kapiri Mposhi Town Council has commenced the construction of a modern truck park funded by the World Bank, in a bid to improve infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of goods transportation in the town.

The project, valued at K2.6 million, has been awarded to World Link Company Ltd and is scheduled to be completed within three months. The facility is expected to ease congestion in the central business district by providing a safe and organized parking space for trucks, thereby ensuring a smoother flow of traffic.

Once completed, the truck park will feature amenities such as designated parking bays, showers, and catering services to cater to truck drivers and logistics companies. The project is also set to create employment opportunities for local youths during and after the construction phase.

Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Secretary, Mr. Collins Ndilema, who inspected the construction site yesterday, said the initiative underscores the council’s commitment to developing infrastructure that supports business growth and improves the quality of life for residents.

> “The new truck park will become a vital hub for the town’s economic activities, fostering growth and development in the region. Designated parking areas reduce the risk of accidents and help decongest urban roads,” Mr. Ndilema said.

He further emphasized that the facility will enhance the security of both drivers and their cargo by providing a secure environment, while also delivering environmental benefits through reduced pollution and habitat disruption caused by unauthorized parking.

“The truck park is an important milestone for Kapiri Mposhi, not only in promoting safety and orderliness but also in stimulating economic growth,” he added.
