Types of farm records and their importance

Farming is not just about growing crops or keeping animals. It is also a business. For any business to grow, it must be managed well. One way to manage a farm properly is by keeping good records. Farm records help the farmer know what is happening on the farm, what is working, and what needs to change.

Below are the common types of farm records and the reasons why they are important.

1. Production records
These are used to record what the farmer produces on the farm. This includes crops or livestock.

Examples:

* Dates of planting
* Types of crops or seed varieties used
* Amount harvested
* Number of animals born or sold
* Quantity of eggs, milk, or meat produced

Why they are important:
They help the farmer know which crops or animals give the best results and help in planning for better farming in the future.

2. Input records
These records show what has been used on the farm to grow crops or raise animals.

Examples:

* Fertilizers or compost applied
* Pesticides or organic sprays used
* Animal feeds bought
* Labor used for various tasks

Why they are important:
They help control spending, track how resources are used, and compare costs with results to know if the farm is making progress.

3. Financial records
These keep track of all money coming in and going out of the farm.

Examples:

* Income from selling farm produce
* Costs of buying seeds, chemicals, or tools
* Loan or credit information
* Profits or losses

Why they are important:
They help the farmer know if the farm is making money or not and guide decisions on spending or investing.

4. Inventory records
These show all the items the farm owns and uses.

Examples:

* Farm tools and equipment
* Livestock or poultry counts
* Stored seeds, fertilizers, or feeds
* Buildings and storage units

Before joining anything that sells itself as an outgrower scheme, please understand what outgrower schemes are and focus on how outgrower schemes generally focus on win win situations for both the buyer and grower.

If you have to pay membership fee and then buy inputs on a cash basis and up front from the outgrower scheme but only in exchange for a promise to buy your produce, while taking no dither risk, you have met conmen.

Yes you can have signed contracts where they promise to buy the produce but they can simply get out of that contract by claiming your produce doesn’t meet the minimum requirements.

****** they already made their money upfront.

If you want to grow a particular crop, grow it because it is part of your crop plan on your farm, not because someone lured you in using funny calculations and the promise of a high buying price.

***** most of you venturing into this “chilli on contract” thing will cry; might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but one day.
