Zambezi Clashes Leave One Injured, Over 100 Suspects Arrested

‎The Zambia Police Service has confirmed a wave of violent clashes in Zambezi District, North-Western Province, where a group of Lundas attacked Luvales who had gathered on August 17, 2025, to welcome a cyclist attending the Likumbi Lyamize Ceremony. Police say the attackers assaulted a rider, set his motorcycle ablaze, and engaged officers with bows and arrows, leaving a 20-year-old Lunda man, Gibson Mbimbi, with a gunshot wound.

‎The violence escalated into running battles that saw five houses belonging to Luvales set on fire. Police recovered over 30 offensive weapons, including bows, arrows, and spears. On August 18, a reinforced team of officers, supported by the Paramilitary Unit, moved in to restore calm as Lundas again attempted to disrupt cultural processions. In the operation, 115 suspects, among them men, women, and juveniles, were apprehended, while three police vehicles sustained tyre damage from nail-planted planks.

‎Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that investigations point to a deliberate plan by some Lunda members to disrupt the ceremony. He assured that the police, in collaboration with other security wings, remain firmly on the ground to safeguard lives and restore peace in Zambezi District.

ECL TO BE BURIED IN SA, FAMILY ANNOUNCES

On behalf of the Lungu family, we wish to announce that the funeral and burial of our beloved Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu will take place here in South Africa, in accordance with the family’s wishes for a private ceremony.

This period has been deeply emotional for family, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support and condolences extended to the family from across the continent and the globe.

We would especially like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of South Africa for their respectful support and for honouring the family’s decision to hold a private funeral and burial here in South Africa.

Your non-interference and respect of the South African Constitution and rights of the family and the desire of the family is commendable and will give space to mourn and celebrate the life of our loved Edgar Chagwa Lungu in dignity and peace.

The visit of the Honourabke Minister for International Relations, Mr Ronald Lamola, was heartwarming when he came to convey a message of condolences on behalf of President Cyril Ramaposa.

The Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity amongst fellow Zambians during this time and thanks all friends, supporters, and members of the public for their understanding, compassion and willingness to mourn the former head of state who, as it has been resolved by the family, will be buried here in Johannesburg South Africa at a private funeral.

Further details regarding the funeral arrangements and burial will be shared to the Zambian and South African public in due course.

Six gold miners have died in Mufumbwe's Kikonge after the earth collapsed on them as they were digging for the precious mineral.

Mufumbwe District Commissioner ELIJAH MUNYOMPE who confirmed the deaths to ZNBC news this evening says many more are feared dead as there were thousands of miners digging for gold when the accident happened.

He said 3 of the dead are from Solwezi, one from Lusaka and the other from Mufumbwe, while the 6th body is yet to be identified.

Mr. MUNYOMPE says the District Joint Investigations Committee –DJOC- is still in the area trying to rescue any survivors from the pit.

He says the rescue operation which began early this morning has only managed to dig out the six dead miners whose bodies have been transported to the district hospital mortuary.
