BANK of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Denny Kalyalya says the central bank is not buying gold being extracted from “gold rush" districts country-wide because of ethical issues such as child and or militia labour.

And BoZ has about 2.8 tonnes of gold in its reserves worth US$300 million.

Dr Kalyalya said during a media tour and briefing at Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) here on Sunday that the process of buying gold using the local currency has continued.

However, Dr Kalyalya highlighted that BoZ is not participating in buying gold from gold rush districts country wide for varying reasons.

Dr Kalyalya said to start with, gold coming from the said districts is unprocessed.

He said BoZ can only buy gold from places where the mineral is properly mined, processed and with no issues of child or slave labour.

ZNUT, SESTUZ AND NAQEZ WELCOME LICENCIATE EXAMS FOR TEACHERS
.............adding that the teachers will have an increased credibility and respect from citizens

By Ludia Phiri Ngwadzai

THE Zambia National Union of Teachers(ZNUT ), Secondary Schools Teachers Union of Zambia( SESTUZ)and National Quality Education in Zambia(NAQEZ )have described the approved Teaching Professional Bill of 2025 as progressive.

Speaking in separate phone interviews, the Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) General Secretary, Muvwanjilanji Siwila said the bill is a welcome idea that needs to be appreciated and cherished.

Mr. Siwila said licenciate exams will provide the education sector with the professionalism it deserves within itself.

And Secondary Schools Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) General Secretary, Anthony Mukanda said the bill is a progressive provision and long overdue.

Mr. Mukanda added that the licenciate exams is quality control for people that enter into professions adding that the introduction of the exams for the teaching fraternity is timely.

"I think that the introduction of these licenciate exams could not have come at a better time than now when we have these proliferation of training colleges". Said Mr. Mukanda.

He noted with concern that the public had been subjected to a lot of inconsistencies in terms of people handling the learners amid proliferation of training colleges mainly those in the private sector.

"These exams will provide some control on the calibre of people that are going to be employed and begin teaching". He said.

Mr. Mukanda has however expressed optimism that an enhanced quality competence by those entrusted with the responsibility of handling the learners shall be achieved.

He has since called on the Teaching Council of Zambia to promulgate the mechanisms by which the exams will be prepared to ensure its intended objective is achieved and that major stakeholders will be brought on board to curb leakages and malpractices in the administration of the licensure exams.

Meanwhile, National Quality Education in Zambia(NAQEZ) executive director, Dr. Aaron Chansa has called on all stakeholders to support the introduction of licenciate exams to ensure quality teachers and quality education.

Dr. Chansa explained that the exams have a potential to contribute to a more qualified and effective teaching workforce in Zambia.

He said licentiate assessments will grant teachers and the fraternity an increased credibility and respect from citizens.

"Currently, the Teaching Council of Zambia registers anybody as teachers as long as they have money and a certificate, but with exams ,holding teachers accountable for their knowledge, skills and ethics will hold more meaning, said Dr. Chansa.

Cabinet approved the Teaching Professional Bill of 2025, which will require newly trained teachers to sit for licensure exams before entering the profession. The move is aimed at strengthening quality and professionalism in the education sector.

GOVT DISBURSES K1.2 BILLION SCTs FOR MAY, JUNE

The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) is currently disbursing K1.2 billion in Social Cash Transfers (SCTs) to more than 1.3 million targeted vulnerable and poor households across the country for the May–June 2025 payment cycle.

Government has further committed to maintaining the SCT values at K800 for households without a person with a disability and K1,200 for households that have a person with a disability. This is in a bid to ensure that beneficiaries have adequate household income to support their livelihoods.

The Ministry continues to provide this life-saving intervention to the vulnerable and poor households in the country, which includes those with chronically ill persons on palliative care, female-headed households with at least three children below the age of 18, child-headed households, households with elderly persons, and households with persons with disabilities. These households are targeted and enrolled after they are assessed as meeting the set poverty criteria.

The Ministry has significantly reduced human interface in the payment process. Digital platforms including mobile money and bank transfers are now used to reach 78% of the beneficiaries, accounting for 994,041 out of 1.3 million households. This shift has improved accountability and enabled real-time tracking of the payments.

To accelerate graduation out of poverty, the Ministry has continued to link SCT beneficiaries to productive livelihood empowerment programmes, such as supporting women's livelihoods, empowering them with entrepreneurship skills, and providing productive grants for businesses.

This graduation pathway ensures that while households receive essential social assistance, they are also equipped with the tools and opportunities to transition out of poverty sustainably.

The Ministry reaffirms its dedication to uplifting the most vulnerable members of our society and promoting inclusive, sustainable livelihoods for all.
