MTN SUPER LEAGUE TAKES OFF…ITAKA NETS A MINUTE INTO NEW SEASON, PERRY BACK TO HAUNT NAPSA

The 2025/2026 MTN Super League kicked off on Saturday afternoon with six exciting games taking centre stage.

Three games had goals while the other three were barren draws.

ITAKA NETS THE FIRST OF THE SEASON

Nchanga Rangers' Christopher Itaka scored the fastest goal of the season so far and the first of the company a minute into Nchanga Rangers' match against Mutondo stars.

Itaka just needed fifteen seconds to put Brave Rangers in the lead at Nchanga Stadium. Nchanga Rangers' Maxwell Mulutula scored the first goal for last season.

PERRY RETURNS TO HAUNT NAPSA

Perry Mutapa returned to face his former team, NAPSA Stars with his new side Green Eagles.

George 'Boom' Chaloba put the Kawale Boys in the lead in the 22nd minute before Collins Sikombe could double the lead just before halftime.

The Principal masterminded his new side's comfortable win over his former side, a good start to life at Choma Green Eagles.

MAITE AWINA ICHUNGULO

Mufulira Wanderers lived up to their tag ‘Maite Awina Ichungulo ‘ as they came back from a goal down to beat newcomers Mines United 2-1.

Former NAPSA Stars defender Luka Ng'uni put the hosts, Mines United in the lead just before halftime.

Patson Kwataime drew Mufulira Wanderers level just a minute into the second stanza. Owen Mwamba scored the winner in the 68th minute to complete an impressive comeback.

THREE GOALLESS DRAWS

ZESCO United played to a goalless draw with Konkola Blades, FC MUZA and ZANACO also blanked as Kabwe Warriors were held to a scoreless draw by Kansanshi Dynamos.

LUBASI JOINS ZANACO LADIES ON LOAN

Former Zambia U17 Women's National Team captain Lubasi Pumulo has joined ZANACO Ladies on a two year loan deal from Green Buffaloes Women's Football Club.

Lubasi has struggled with game time at Buffaloes after suffering a serious injury sometime back and will be looking to get some game time with the Lady Bankers.

Lubasi is well known for leading the Copper Princesses to a COSAFA U17 Championship back in 2021.

She made her Copper Queens debut in the 2022 WAFCON qualifier against Malawi away in Lilongwe.

BUPE , MARY , AND MASELA - RED ARROWS WOMEN'S THREE MUSKETEERS

Red Arrows Women seem to be in a transition now after big name departures in the last few years.

Hellen Namwinga Mubanga left first, Prisca Chilufya left, Grace Chanda, Margaret Belemu (who is back now ), And Ochumba Oseke Lubanji last season plus the injured Susan Banda.

Mary Wilombe and Mary Mambwe are the two still holding their own in the middle and on the wing for the Airwomen.

But a pattern is emerging of new kids on the block, with skills, energy and the knack for making things happen.

The three musketeers in Mary Mukupa, Bupe Banda and Masela Sekeseke are slowly becoming an important part of the Airwomen set up.

Bupe, a product of Football Chance Foundation has gradually become an important part of that midfield with her calmness on the ball, awareness and quality passing.

She was part of the 2024 Copper Queens COSAFA winning squad and partnered with Evarine Susan Katongo in the middle of the park.

Banda can dictate play and the tempo of the game which makes her an asset to the Daniel Sibande coached outfit.

Her partner in crime in the middle of the park is Mary Mukupa, another quality midfielder with the heart and energy.

Mukupa is a graduate of the Copper Princesses and now with theYoung Copper Queens, she was part of the team that won the recently held COSAFA U20 Championship.

Mukupa and Bupe Banda make up a good partnership in the middle of the park and will be key for the Airwomen this season.

The third player is Masela Sekeseke, The Alteza, talk about quality, pace and paniche, that's Masela.

The well spoken Masela, possesses a lot of pace and trickery making her an asset on the wings for the Women.

The Copper Princess play maker is primed to have a very good season with the Airwomen.

She can beat players, set up goals with her good crosses and can also scored goals which makes her a nightmare for opponents.

The Airwomen start their campaign this afternoon against newly promoted Konkola Blades Queens at Nkoloma.

It's a match you won't want to miss.

Football is back baby.

Women's Footbal on the rise.

BOLA YAPA ZED IS BACK .... ARE YOU READY FOR THE MTN SUPER LEAGUE?

The MTN Super League returns this afternoon with six matches set to entertain fans across the country.

Defending Champions, Power Dynamos are not in action this weekend they are in Rwanda for an international friendly match against APR.

GAME OF THE WEEK

My game of the weekend is NAPSA Stars taking on Green Eagles at Woodlands Stadium.

Coach Perry Mutapa is back to take on his former team together with midfielder Collins Sikombe.

The Pensioners will also look to avoid losing to their former coach but will be without Rally Bwalya and Evans Kayombo Jnr who are both away on National Team duty.

Augustine Mulenga was unveiled yesterday and could make his debut for his second stint this afternoon.

MINES UNITED WITH A FIRST

Mines United will play their first match in the topflight this afternoon as they take on Mufulira Wanderers.

The Kabwe based outfit will hope to start their journey in the MTN Super League with a win but face a tricky Mufulira Wanderers side.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

ZESCO United's duo of David Simukonda and Pascal Phiri are two of the exciting talents to watch this season for me.

At Red Arrows obviously Alassane Diarra who has continued to be one of the top players in the league.

Highly rated youngster Lewis Mwachisemo joined Red Arrows from Sporting Lusaka recently and my eyes are fixed on him to see his progress.

GOLDEN BOOT

Brian Masanyinga had a good season with the Champions and it will be interesting to see if he can pick up from where he left off.

He faces competition from new teammates Moses Shumah and Emmanuel Osoro who were the top two goalscorers in Kenya last season.

Andrew Phiri and Evans Kayombo Jnr are expected to also be in the Golden Boot conversation.

Clive Bayeta could be another player looking to grab the headlines.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

The coaching reshuffles in the league are always another interesting thing to look out for as the season progresses.

The MTN Super League is here. Which game are you watching today?

ITS HERE FINALLY- EDEN UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE RETURNS

The Eden University Women's Super returns this afternoon after 103 days and excitement has already been built up in anticipation.

TITLE CONTENDERS

After going the whole season unbeaten winning 31 games and only drawing 3, ZESCO Ndola Girls are the favorites again to defend their title.

The Ndola based outfit have a strong squad with some exciting players on their roster.

The other title contenders are the team that came out second Green Buffaloes Women's Football Club.

The Zambia army sponsored outfit won four straight league titles before ZESCO Ndola Girls ended their dominance and will look to quickly get back to winning ways.

The third team is Indeni Roses who seem always be around the title race though it has not yet clicked for them. They remain the outsiders of the title race.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

The best player in the Women's Super League remains Evarine Susan Katongo and will again play a big role for Green Buffaloes.

Last season she scored 9 goals and set up 22 others, the midfield ace will look to replicate that this season.

She already scored a goal and assisted another in the Charity Shield a sign of things to come from the Luyando Foundation Girls product.

Enelesi 'Mayuka' Phiri, the ZESCO Ndola Girls wing wizard is one of the most talented forwards on the local scene and will give a lot of people problems.

She was a menace at Nkwazi Queens and is back now after her transfer issues were sorted now with Zegalicious Girls.

The football fans already got a glimpse of what, the girl nicknamed Mayuka is able to do as she netted a goal and set up another in the Charity Shield.

Mercy Chipasula - Captain Kamfisa is another gem that will excite fans again this season with a her silky touch and skill.

She is a marvel to watch and will again be a fan attraction for this season.

SURPRISE PACKAGE

Nchanga Rangers Queens started last season on a low note but quickly grew into the season and started beating teams for fun.

It will be interesting to see what they will do in this campaign and could easily be part of the title chase.

Regina Chanda - Very few people understand just how talented the midfield ace from ZANACO Ladies is, at times it feels like even herself does not get it.

When she is in her element very few players can tough her but sometimes lack consistency and seriousness.

Should she just work on that consistency level she could have one of her best seasons with the Lady Bankers.

YOUNGSTERS

Saliya Mwanza - The Football Chance product won the COSAFA U20 Championship player of the tournament after an amazing outing and will be expected to again have another exciting campaign in the Women's Super League with the Elite Ladies.

Margaret Gondwe - The Luyando Foundation Girls product has cemented her place at the heart of the Green Buffaloes Women's Football Club defense and will again be a key member of Coach Charles Haalubono's set up for the season.

Masela Sekeseke - The Copper Princesses winger is another exciting talent expected to have a great campaign with Red Arrows.

PICK OF THE WEEKEND

My game of the weekend is ZANACO Ladies vs Nchanga Rangers Queens. It is a match you can't afford to miss.

First and foremost the coaches will be looking to outwit each other as both her former Copper Queens assistant coaches and now coach the Under 20 National Team, Florence Mwila vs Charity Nthala.

The number of exciting players in this match is also up there talk of Tricia Mabamba, Gracious Tailoshi, Mapalo Maluba all from Nchanga Rangers Queens.

On the other hand, ZANACO Ladies boast of the likes of Pauline Zulu, Comfort Selemani, Regina Chanda, Beauty Matilda Zulu among others.

The Eden University Women's Super League is back, it's beautiful, brace yourselves for another exciting season.

See you at the stadium nearest to you. We will be here to give you updates, live scores, analysis, and everything in between.

Moses Pedro Mwanza, Van Nickolas Shingwe , Na'both Malupande Mwelwa and Victor Mainza Ng'andu our league is back gents , are we ready?

THE CHAN OUTING - A SYMPTOM OF THE BIGGER PROBLEM

The Zambia National Team yesterday suffered their third loss of the ongoing TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament hence being eliminated.

The loss to Morocco meant Zambia had suffered three consecutive losses at one CHAN tournament, in fact it is the very first time Zambia has ever lost a group stage game at a CHAN tournament, not to talk of three.

After the underwhelming performance by the team, fans are now looking for answers and like always it's a blame game.

So let me try and look at this as objectively as possible given that Sunday's match with Kenya is now just fulfilling a fixture with no impact on the Chipolopolo.

The first target of the blame game is the coach Avram Grant. Maybe deservedly so because at the end of the day it was his tactics at play.

But is getting rid of the coach the solution? , if you ask me, no, I mean, it's okay to get rid of him but that does not begin to solve half our problems.

He could just be part of the problem but not necessarily the whole problem, hope you get the picture.

SO WHAT'S THE ISSUE

Our issue is multi factorial, it's not one thing but I will try to explain it the best way I understand.

LOW PLAYER QUALITY

Sadly the quality of our players is not good enough. We can lie to ourselves day in and day out and say no we have good players we actually don't.

The raw talent is abundant but the finished products are not up to scratch.

A simple example is the Morocco team that outclassed us yesterday, none of the players will make the World Cup qualifiers squad and AFCON squad but for us about six or eight will make that squad and some even start.

This is not helping us compete at the highest level. We need to produce better players. It's that simple.

We need to invest in the process of producing better players.

POOR LOCAL LEAGUE

Our league is very poor at the moment and not as competitive as it should be.

Actually those results at CHAN are a direct translation to how poor our league has been in the last few years.

We need to have a more competitive and better league. Our teams need to be better, our league simply needs to be better because that's where the coaches pick players from.

If the leagues do not have the quality then the National team will not have the quality.

Our players abroad are very few and those that are active every week even fewer.

INVESTMENT

The first thing is investment in the sport itself. Our football heavily depends on CSR and is not run as a business.

As such it's hard to heavily invest in the players, infrastructure, personnel and the like.

We need to start taking it seriously and run it as business but of course that means our administrators need to take the game seriously and also the product needs massive improvements.

But overall investment is lacking in our football which is the first problem.

DEAD OR STAGNANT YOUTH SYSTEM

The Youth System that is producing players needs to be looked at and improved because we keep producing the same level of players.

We need to revamp the School Football system to catch the players young and groom them.

We also need academies everywhere, the ones that are doing the right thing are very few.

The more proper academies we have the better chances will have of getting good enough players for the National Team.

COACHING

Another thing we need to invest in is coaching. At National team players are only taught tactics and implementation, the rest are done at grassroots and clubs.

Most of these players their formative years are under coaches with passion but may lack the necessary tools to develop them.

So we need to really invest in the coaches because they are the ones that produce these players.

There is a lot more but I guess you get the picture of what I am trying to say.

Part two will be what I think should be done.

The problems are visible then what next, so of the solutions I feel can help us.
