SUDDEN DEATH IN POLICE CELLS
Today, 17th March 2025, around 00:00 hours, Livingstone Central Police Station recorded an incident of Sudden Death in Police cells. This occurred on 16th March 2025, around 22:00 hours at Livingstone Central Police Station.
Brief facts of the matter are that on 3rd March 2025, the deceased, Andrew Likando, aged 30 years, of an unmarked house in Maloni compound, Livingstone, was apprehended by the complainant, Ackson Tembo of Maloni compound, with the help of other members of the public, after committing an offense of Burglary and Theft.
He was handed over at Linda Police Station, along with the recovered exhibits. Before the suspect's detention, Linda Police Station officers took him to Mosi-oa-Tunya Clinic, as he complained of a headache, painful neck, and fatigue following the beating he received from a mob that captured him. After medical examinations at the clinic, the suspect was released and subsequently charged and arrested for the aforementioned offense.
He was immediately transferred to Livingstone Central Police Station cells for detention, as Linda Police Station cells are not well secured. The docket of the case was completed and submitted to the National Prosecutions Authority, and the suspect was scheduled to appear in court today, 17th March 2025.
On 16th March 2025, around 22:00 hours, the suspect died while in Police cells at Livingstone Central Police Station.
The body was physically inspected and found without any physical injuries, but saliva and foam were observed around the mouth and nose. Fellow inmates interviewed stated that since the suspect's arrival and detention, he had been complaining of headaches, painful neck, and body fatigue, and exhibited behavior consistent with someone of unsound mind.
Further information gathered indicated that, before his apprehension, the suspect had been complaining of headaches but was nursing himself at home, as he was staying alone. The body of the deceased was collect
