SAD:A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has been murdered in Petauke by her husband, who allegedly hacked her on the head multiple times with a machete following a marital dispute.

The victim, Catherine Mwale, was attacked by her husband, Jackson Phiri, 22, in full view of villagers.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred on November 24, 2025 around 13:00 hours at Zuze village in Chief Kalindawalo’s area.

Mweemba said the suspect was seen chasing his wife with a machete before she slipped and fell, allowing him to catch up and hack her repeatedly on the head, killing her instantly.

“The suspect repeatedly hacked her on the head, killing her on the spot in full view of other villagers,” Mweemba said.

He added that when members of the public attempted to apprehend the suspect, he turned violent on them before fleeing.

Police officers later found the body about 60 metres from her house, lying in a pool of blood with multiple head and facial injuries.

Mweemba said the couple was known to have frequent marital disputes, though the cause of the latest misunderstanding is not yet established.

A manhunt was launched and the suspect was apprehended yesterday.
