Mucha Greenfields Agro Ltd is excited to announce the African Bird’s Eye (ABE) Chili Training that will be taking place on the Copperbelt.

WHICH ONE IS THE BEST TOP DRESSING FOR ONIONS AMONG THESE

CAN , CALCIUM NITRITE AND GREEN SULFUR

Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN)

Nutrient content: About 26–27% Nitrogen + some Calcium.

Provides quick and steady nitrogen release, helps onions develop good bulb size.

Too much nitrogen late in the season reduces onion shelf life and quality.

Best used: Early–mid growth stage, but reduce towards bulb maturity.

Calcium Nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂)

Nutrient content: About 15.5% Nitrogen (all nitrate form, immediately available) + 19% Calcium.

Supplies readily available nitrogen plus calcium which strengthens onion bulbs, reduces rotting, and improves shelf life.

Advantage: Improves bulb firmness and storability.

Best used: As top dressing from 3–6 weeks after transplanting; also recommended during bulb formation.

Green Sulphur (Sulphur-based fertilizer)

Nutrient content: Mainly Sulphur (and sometimes a bit of Nitrogen depending on the formulation).

Sulphur is essential for flavor, pungency, and onion oil content. Deficiency causes yellowing of leaves and poor bulb quality.

Advantage: Improves bulb quality and storage life, enhances strong onion taste.

Not a strong nitrogen supplier, so usually used as a supplement, not main top dressing.

Best used: As a supplement, especially if soils are deficient in sulphur.

Best top dressing for onions is Calcium Nitrate because it provides both quick-acting nitrogen and calcium that improves bulb quality and storability.

CAN is also good but can reduce quality if overused.

Green Sulphur is not a full top dressing on its own — it should be combined with a nitrogen source like Calcium Nitrate or CAN.

If you must choose one: Calcium Nitrate is the best.
