Dear new producers

Don't chase presets — learn your plugins.
No matter how many tools you have, they won't fix your mix if you don't understand them. Spend time learning what each plugin does and why you use it. Your mixes will improve and production will feel easier.

Aphex (Aural Exciter) on vocals
The Aphex adds brightness, clarity, and presence to vocals without boosting EQ too much. It brings out the air, sparkle, and details — especially in dull or muddy vocals.
It works by adding harmonic excitement, making the vocal sound more alive and upfront in the mix.

You usually use it
after EQ and compression
and only a little — too much can make vocals sound harsh

Clear difference between a Saturator and an Exciter in mixing, especially for vocals and Afro-pop:

A.. Saturator

What it does:
Adds harmonic distortion, warmth, thickness, and color to the sound.

How it works:
It simulates analog gear like tapes, tubes, and transformers.
When you push the sound, it becomes fatter, warmer, and sometimes slightly compressed.

Best for:

1.Making vocals warm

2.Making drums and 808s thick

3.Making a mix feel analog

4.Adding body

Sound effect:
Warm, thick, round, sometimes a bit crunchy.

B.. Exciter

What it does:
Adds brightness and top-end sparkle by adding high-frequency harmonics.

How it works:
It focuses on the high range, adding artificial harmonics that give vocals shine, air, and presence.

Best for:

1.Making vocals bright and clear

2.Adding “air” to a dull mix

3.Helping vocals cut through without boosting EQ too much

4.Enhancing clarity

Sound effect:
Shiny, crisp, airy, brighter.

Afro-Pop Vocal Chain (Waves – In Perfect Order)

1.Waves Tune Real-Time – clean tuning

2.R-Vox – main vocal compression

3.Sibilance – smooth de-essing

4.CLA Vocals – tone shaping (EQ + extra compression)

5.H-Reverb – main vocal reverb (space / depth)

6.H-Delay – slapback / bounce delay

7.Vocal Rider – final volume control

Why we use exciters on vocals:

1.To add brightness – Exciters bring out the sparkle and clarity in dull vocals.

2.To add presence – They help vocals cut through the mix without turning the volume up.

3.To enhance harmonics – Exciters create pleasant high-frequency harmonics that make vocals sound more polished and professional.

4.To fix muddy vocals – If vocals feel too dark or muffled, an exciter can open them up.

5.To add energy – They make vocals feel more lively, crisp, and modern, especially in genres like Afro-pop, Amapiano, Hip-hop, EDM, etc.

>>>But don’t overuse it.
Too much exciter can cause harshness and make the mix sound cheap. Use just enough to brighten the vocal.

Why It’s Important to Sidechain Your Reverb and Delay

Sidechaining your reverb and delay helps your vocals stay clean, clear, and upfront in the mix.
When you don’t sidechain, the reverb and delay can cover the vocal, making it sound muddy or pushed back.

What sidechaining does:
It makes the reverb/delay duck (go lower) when the main vocal is singing, and then come back up when the vocal stops.

Why this is good:

1. More clarity – your main vocal stays sharp and understandable.

2.Less mud – reverb isn't fighting the vocal.

3. More control – you get that big space without messing up the mix.

4. More professional sound – cleaner, tighter, more modern.

Simple logic:
When the vocal is talking → reverb goes down.
When the vocal stops → reverb rises and fills the space.

It’s one of the secrets behind clean, punchy, radio-ready vocals.

Gain staging means controlling your volume levels at every step of the mix so nothing is too loud, clipping, or distorting.

>>Simple explanation:
Keep your audio clean
Make sure each plugin gets a healthy level (not too hot, not too low)
Prevent distortion before it happens
Give your mix headroom so it sounds clear

>>In easy steps:

1.Pull your tracks down so nothing is hitting red.

2.Input gain → keep around -18 dB to -12 dB (sweet spot).

3.Output gain → balance it so it’s not louder than the input.

4.Leave headroom on the master (around -6 dB).

>>Why it matters:

Good gain staging = clean mix
Bad gain staging = muddy mix + distortion + no clarity

What Happens to Vocals Without Compression

1. Big Volume Differences

The loud words will be too loud,
the soft words will be too soft.

Your vocal will sound unbalanced and jumpy.

2. Harder to Sit in the Mix

Because the vocal goes up and down in volume, it becomes difficult to blend with:
drums
bass
instruments

It will float on top or disappear randomly.

3. Peaks Will Clip

If the singer gets excited and gets louder, the waveform will clip/distort, especially in the chorus.

4. Harsh “S” and “P” sounds

Without compression, plosive sounds (P, B) and sibilants (S, SH) jump out too much, making the vocal sound rough.

5. More Work in Mixing
You spend extra time doing:
volume automation
manual leveling
de-essing
gain adjustments
A compressor would fix that faster.

✅ Are vocals without compression always bad?

No — raw vocals are natural and dynamic.
But in modern music, we need compression to make vocals:
stable
smooth
loud
professional
radio-ready

Without it, the vocal often sounds uncontrolled.

Function of a Compressor on Vocals

A compressor controls the dynamic range of the vocal.

👉 In simple words:
It reduces loud parts and brings up soft parts, so the vocal becomes stable, smooth, and easy to hear in the mix.
What a compressor helps with:
Keeps the vocal at the same level
Makes the voice sound controlled and professional
Removes sudden loud spikes
Helps the vocal sit well in the beat
Adds punch and thickness (if used well)

Example:
If the singer shouts on one line and whispers on the next, the compressor balances it.

Function of a Limiter on Vocals

A limiter is like a stronger compressor.
It acts as a safety guard that prevents the vocal from going beyond a set volume.

👉 In simple words:
It stops the vocal from clipping or getting too loud.
What a limiter helps with:
Protects the vocal from distortion
Keeps peaks from jumping above 0 dB
Makes the loudest parts controlled
Helps the vocal stay clean on the master channel
Can be used to catch sharp consonants or screams

Example:
If a sharp “T” or “K” hit suddenly gets very loud, the limiter keeps it from clipping.
