BIDEN TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID, WHITE HOUSE SAYS

(BBC) Joe Biden has tested positive for Covid-19 and is suffering mild symptoms, the White House has said.

Karine Jean-Pierre, his press secretary, said the US president is vaccinated and boosted. He has tested positive for Covid twice before.

Mr Biden, 81, was seen earlier on Wednesday visiting supporters in Las Vegas and speaking at an event. He has cancelled a campaign speech later in the night.

The illness comes as he faces increasing pressure to step aside because of his age.

US media reports both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jefferies - the top two Democrats in the US Congress - separately met with Mr Biden privately and expressed that there is deep concern his candidacy could negatively impact other House and Senate races.

Ms Jean-Pierre said the president planned to isolate at his home in Delaware while he carries out "all of his duties fully during that time".

The president's doctor, Kevin O'Connor, said Mr Biden presented with upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and a cough and was given his first dose of Paxlovid.

TRUMP ASSASSINATION TARGET

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump appeared to be the target of an assassination attempt as he spoke during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, two law enforcement officials said.

The former president, his ear covered in blood from what he said was a gunshot, was quickly pulled away by Secret Service agents and his campaign said he was “fine.”

A local prosecutor said the suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead. The Secret Service said two spectators were critically injured.

Posting on his Truth Social media site about two and a half hours after the shooting, Trump said a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said in the post. “Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”

The attack, by a shooter who law enforcement officials say was then killed by the Secret Service, was the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

It comes amid a deeply polarized political atmosphere, just four months from the presidential elections and days before Trump is to be officially named the Republican nominee at his party’s convention.

MADE IN ZAMBIA: AN INNOVATIVE FLOATING POWER GENERATION UNIT IMPRESSES THE ENGINEERING INSTITUTION OF ZAMBIA

The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) recently explored a power generation portable unit called the Hydro Master, innovated by Heavy Duty Solutions Zambia in Makeni.

The Hydro Master power generation unit has technology that converts the velocity of moving surface water into electricity.

This cleverly designed unit, delivered by a floating hydro-kinetic turbine, holds promise for various sectors in commercial, residential, agricultural, tourism, hospitality, and mining.

In the wake of loadshedding, this innovation comes timely to cushion the power deficit the country is experiencing and enable continuation of business for small, medium and large enterprises.

Elaborating on the capabilities of the Hydro Master, Heavy Duty Solutions Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Brian Ngoma, said the unit harnesses energy from perennial flowing water bodies such as rivers, streams, canals, and backwater channels.

Mr. Ngoma said this is a first of its kind in Zambia and is locally manufactured and distributed by Heavy Duty Solutions Zambia Limited, ensuring short manufacturing lead times and consistent hydro-electricity supply, operating 24/7.

“The Hydro Master is designed to self-adjust to changes in water levels, offering a predictable and constant energy output. It can be customized to specifications ranging from 5kVA to 1000kVA, available in single-phase or three-phase power at 400W/240V,” he said.

He emphasized the benefits of the Hydro Master, which requires no dam or civil infrastructure works, easy installation and setup, and incurs no maintenance, servicing, or operating costs. Additionally, the unit is environmentally friendly.

Girl tells court she can’t stop bleeding after s*xual abuse for 'Ba Deacon'

A 15-year old girl yesterday revealed to the Court that she has never stopped bleeding after she was violated on eight occasions by a shopkeeper who is three decades older than her.

The girl said for robbing her innocence the man gave her a pittance from as low as K1, mojo drink and a cream doughnut.

This is in a matter where a ‘pedophile’ of Lusaka’s Kabanana compound Richard Mwanza is charged with seven counts of defilement for having carnal knowledge of seven girls.

Testifying before Magistrate Chrispin Hampungani, the girl narrated that early this year whilst playing with her friends in the rains, her friend asked her to accompany her to MWanza’s place whom she referred to as uncle.

The girl said Mwanza asked them to go and pluck mangoes while he remained with one of the girls in the shop and after some time they all went home.

“The following day, we went back to uncle's shop. He called me and my friend by the counter, he put my friend on the laps, then opened the zip of his trousers. He removed his p***s and had s*x with her and we went home,”the grade five pupil said.

She said on the third day when they went back to the shop, Mwanza pulled her to the counter, put her on his laps and robed her chaste.

The 15-year old said she has never stopped bleeding after Mwanza illegally had s*x with her.

“He then inserted his p***s into my va**na. From there I started bleeding, since then, the periods have never stopped. They come out at times heavily and at times, just drops. I never had this problem before. I started bleeding that very day he had s*x with me,”the survivor narrated.

“I then stood up and went to the toilet. I then told my friend that "look here where you have brought me to, I now have blood coming out” When I told my friend, she told me to bottle up and not to tell anyone at home.”

CHILILABOMBWE MAN AXES WIFE AFTER FINDING HER HAVING S£X WITH TWO MEN

A 29-year-old man from Chililabombwe has been arrested for allegedly axing his wife on both legs after finding her having s£x with two unknown men.

Alex Chola reportedly received a tip-off that his wife was in bed with two men at a certain location.

Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba stated that the suspect has been charged with unlawfully wounding his 21-year-old wife, Charity Chola.

Mr. Mweemba said the incident occurred on July 12, 2024.

"Brief facts are that on July 12, 2024, around midnight, the accused returned home from work and did not find his wife. Confused, he started searching for her. During his search, someone tipped him off about her location," he said.

Mr. Mweemba explained that Chola went directly to the specified house and found his wife having s£x with two unknown men.

One of the men punched Chola in the face before both men fled, leaving his wife behind.

"This angered the accused, who grabbed an axe and struck his wife on both legs. She sustained deep cuts and was rushed to Chimfunshi Clinic for medical treatment," he said.

Mr. Mweemba added that the suspect has been arrested.

Children killed in Nigeria school collapse

(BBC)Several children have died after a school building collapsed in Nigeria’s central Plateau state, local officials say.

Saints Academy, in the state capital, Jos, caved in while students were in class on Friday morning.

Trapped pupils were calling for help from under the rubble, AFP reported, with parents frantically searching for their children.

The National Emergency Management Agency has not confirmed the number of casualties but said "several students" were killed.

The AFP news agency has reported at least 16 students are dead.

Accident in Mkushi District Claims Life of 1-Year 7 month Old Baby

A 1 year 7 month old baby has been killed in a road accident which occurred today, July 12, 2024, along Itala road, opposite Chibefwe Urban Clinic, in Mkushi district.
A motorcycle, ridden by inexperienced 18-year-old male of Itala compound, lost control and hit a female pedestrian, 24, of High cost area Mkushi, who was by the roadside with her 1-year-7-month-old baby on her back.

The accident resulted in the baby's tragic death, while the mother and the rider sustained injuries.

The mother suffered a fractured right leg, head bruises, and general body pains, while the rider had a swollen upper lip, bruises on the left knee, and complained of general body pains.
The body of the deceased baby is in the Mkushi district hospital mortuary and the mother as well as the rider are admitted to the same hospital.
