ZEMA WARNS ILLEGAL MINERS TO CEASE OPERATIONS ON KAFUE RIVER

Lusaka, 5th September 2025

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has sounded a stern warning to illegal miners operating along the Kafue River in Chingola and Chililabombwe districts, particularly in the Hippo Pool area.

This follows an inspection by ZEMA, which revealed alarming levels of environmental damage, including disturbances to the river course, increased turbidity, and potential threats to water quality. The agency says these activities pose a serious risk to aquatic life, biodiversity, and communities that depend on the river.

“ZEMA hereby orders all individuals and companies engaged in unauthorised mining activities in the area to cease and desist immediately,” reads part of the statement.

The agency listed the environmental dangers associated with illegal mining as:
• Destruction of natural habitats and loss of biodiversity
• Pollution of water sources
• Heightened risk of soil erosion
ZEMA has further urged members of the public to report any continued cases of illegal mining, warning that defiance will attract stiff penalties and possible prosecution.

“Let this serve as a final warning,” the statement added. “Failure to comply with environmental regulations will result in swift action.”

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the environment, pledging to work closely with local communities, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to hold perpetrators of environmental degradation accountable.

The statement was issued by ZEMA Manager for Corporate Affairs, Ruth Kanyanga Kamwi.

MAKENI VILLA WARD CHAIRMAN ELIAS CHIHINGA URGES RESIDENTS TO REGISTER FOR SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER PROGRAM

UPND Makeni Villa Ward Chairperson Elias Chihinga has urged all eligible residents to take advantage of the upcoming registration exercise for the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) program, which officially begins on Monday, September 8, 2025.

The registration will take place at Kanyama West Clinic, and is part of the government’s continued efforts to uplift the welfare of vulnerable populations under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr. Chihinga commended the government’s commitment to social protection, noting the recent increase in SCT beneficiaries from 1.3 million to 1.5 million as a clear demonstration of that promise.

“This government is walking the talk when it comes to social protection. Let our people register and be part of this life-changing program,” he said.

He further highlighted that residents in Makeni Villa Ward are also benefiting from other government initiatives, including Cash-for-Work programs and Constituency Development Fund (CDF) skills development bursaries.

Chihinga added that the new registration period is especially important for individuals who were previously enrolled in the Drought Relief Program but are no longer receiving assistance.

However, he clarified that the SCT program specifically targets vulnerable individuals and will not include pregnant or breastfeeding women, who fall under different support categories.

And Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Social Welfare Officer Rabecca Mazunda outlined the four key groups eligible for SCT registration, Persons with disabilities, The chronically ill, Child-headed households and Senior citizens aged 60 and above

Ms. Mazunda emphasized that registration is completely free and warned residents to be wary of fraudsters pretending to be government officials.

“This is a government program meant to support the vulnerable. No one should pay to be registered,” she stressed.

The Social Cash Transfer Program is a flagship initiative by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, aimed at reducing extreme poverty and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable households across the country.

MANDATORY DECLARATION OF ASSETS BILL COMING - ACC

The Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) is drafting a Mandatory Declaration of Assets Bill that is aimed at exposing unethical practices.

ACC Director General Daphne Chabu, says the bill that will be subjected to all public officers, will help foster transparency and promote the conduct and lifestyle audit for public officers.

Mrs Chabu says the proposed piece of legislation surrounding wealth creation among officials, will also be made available to stakeholders for scrutiny and debate.

“Corruption is a cancer that affects all sectors of society, but its impact is most severe on the less privileged, who cannot afford to pay their way to access essential government services such as education, healthcare among other key services,” she notes.

Mrs Chabu said this on Radio Phoenix’s ‘Let the People Talk’ programme monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka.

DR. CORNELIUS MATANDIKO REMEMBERED

Seventeen years may have passed, yet the memory of Dr. Cornelius M. Matandiko remains etched deeply in the hearts of many. A man of vision, faith, and eloquence, Dr. Matandiko’s sudden passing on April 2, 2008, left a void in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zambia and beyond.

The life of this great preacher began on September 1, 1960, when he was born as the last-born in a family of nine at Ipusukilo Mission in Luwingu District, Northern Province. Raised in a Roman Catholic family, he later encountered the Adventist faith during his secondary school years at Rusangu Secondary School in Monze, where he made the life-changing decision to become a Seventh-day Adventist. That decision set him on a lifelong path of service to God and humanity.

Dr. Matandiko’s academic journey was as inspiring as his ministry. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Theology from Solusi University in Zimbabwe before pursuing advanced studies at Andrews University in the United States, where he obtained both his master’s and doctoral degrees.

His educational pursuits reflected his love for learning and his desire to equip himself for effective service.

In 1986, he began his denominational service with the North Zambia Field in Mansa as Education Director.

He later served as Stewardship Director at the Zambia Union in Lusaka until 1991. His gift of preaching soon opened broader doors, and in 1996 he became the familiar face and voice behind the *Voice of Prophecy* program on Zambia’s national broadcaster, ZNBC.

Week after week, his clear, passionate preaching reached millions, transforming lives across Zambia and beyond. He would continue this ministry until his death, earning him the reputation of being one of the most powerful and eloquent preachers of his time.

His service was not confined to Zambia. From 2000 to 2004, he served as a senior lecturer at Baraton University in Kenya, shaping future ministers of the gospel. In 2004, he was called back home to serve as President of the Zambia Union Conference, the highest leadership office in the Adventist Church in Zambia.

At the time of his death, he was also a member of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division (SID) leadership and a regular preacher on Hope Channel. SID President Paul Ratsara captured the loss when he lamented: *“The mighty tree has fallen; it’s a heavy blow to the church. Many more preachers of Dr. Matandiko’s calibre should come forth!”*

His leadership was marked by explosive evangelism. Dr. Matandiko’s passion for soul-winning knew no bounds. He traveled the globe, preaching in towns, villages, and international forums, calling men and women to the Savior.

His sermons, especially the unforgettable message titled *“PRAY”*, are still remembered for their life-transforming power. He was a man who knew the Bible “better than the back of his hand” and spoke of God’s kindness with unmatched clarity.

When he passed away after a short illness in Lusaka, the nation mourned. His funeral was initially planned for Libala SDA Church but had to be moved to the Lusaka Show Grounds to accommodate the massive crowd of more than 20,000 mourners.

The service drew church leaders, ordinary members, and national dignitaries alike, including First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, Health Minister Dr. Brian Chituwo, and Zambia’s founding President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. Their presence testified to the respect and admiration Dr. Matandiko commanded across both church and state.

Behind this great man stood a woman of faith—his wife, Patience Matandiko. Along with their two daughters, Charity and Tina, she was a constant source of strength. Many remember Patience not only as a supportive spouse but as a mentor and encourager to countless women across Zambia.

Dr. Pardon Mwansa, a fellow leader and close friend, once said at his funeral, “If his life were to be written, the book would be bulky.” Indeed, Dr. Matandiko’s story was one of relentless service, tireless evangelism, and unshakable faith.

Today, as we remember Dr. Cornelius Matandiko, we celebrate a life that embodied dedication, courage, and vision. He showed us that true leadership is service, that preaching must be Spirit-filled and transformative, and that one life wholly given to God can impact a church, a nation, and the world.

May his soul continue to rest in peace, and may his legacy inspire a new generation of preachers and leaders to rise with the same zeal for God’s mission.

The Community Technology and Development Trust (CTDT) has urged the Zambian government, through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), to begin purchasing locally produced maize seed varieties as a strategy to enhance agricultural sustainability and support smallholder farmers.

During a field visit in Shibuyunji District, CTDT Seed Production and Marketing Officer Joseph Mitumwa raised concerns over the FRA’s current procurement standards, which exclude local maize varieties due to their slightly off-white color, despite their adaptability and resilience.

“Local seed varieties are often overlooked simply because they are not completely white,” Mr. Mitumwa explained. “Yet they are better suited to our local climate and more resistant to pests and diseases.”

He emphasized that government support for these indigenous varieties would encourage small-scale farmers to grow them at a larger scale, improving yields and strengthening rural economies.

Rotary Club of Kusintha Hosts Golf Tournament to Support School Construction in Chifwema

The Rotary Club of Kusintha in Lusaka successfully hosted a charity golf tournament at Lusaka Golf Club over the weekend, aiming to raise over K100,000 to support the ongoing construction of Nachitete Primary School in Chifwema area.

Club Training Facilitator Jason Mulaisho disclosed that the school project is currently 60 percent complete, with the latest fundraising efforts focused on completing the ablution block, a critical component in ensuring a safe and hygienic learning environment for the pupils.

“The funds raised from this event will go directly toward finishing the ablution block,” Mulaisho said. “This will not only improve sanitation but also help create a more conducive space for learning, especially for children coming from remote communities.”

The initiative forms part of the Rotary Club of Kusintha’s broader mission to enhance education infrastructure in underprivileged areas across Zambia.

The golf tournament drew participation from a wide range of corporate sponsors and individual golfers, all united by a shared passion for giving back to the community. Many participants expressed pride in supporting a cause that directly impacts the lives and education of Zambia’s youth.
