MINISTER MPOSHA URGES YOUTHS AND WOMEN TO EMBRACE MEAT PROCESSING FOR JOB CREATION AND EMPOWERMENT

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Elton Mposha, MP, has urged Zambian youths and women to seize opportunities in meat processing training to improve livelihoods, create jobs, and contribute to food security.

Speaking at NRDC during a free training organized by the In-Service Training Trust (ISTT), Mr. Mposha said the programme is not just about learning technical skills but a pathway to empowerment and transformation.

Over 100 participants from Munali, Kabwata, Matero, and Lusaka Central took part in the initiative.

He emphasized the benefits of meat processing such as food safety, value addition, and entrepreneurship, noting that it aligns with the government’s Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) on skills development and inclusive growth.

Mr. Mposha urged participants to use their certificates as tools for change and to share the knowledge gained with their families and communities.

He also commended ISTT, CEEC, and other government partners for their support, describing the programme as a model of effective collaboration.

“Let this training open new doors for you, your families, and your communities,” he concluded.

ZAMBIA JOINS GLOBAL COMMEMORATION OF WORLD HEART DAY 2025 UNDER THE THEME “DON’T MISS A BEAT”

Lusaka, September 29, 2025 — The Zambia Society for Hypertension has joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Heart Day 2025, with a passionate call for stronger cardiovascular health awareness and prevention under this year’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat.”

Society President Professor Fastone Goma emphasized the urgent need to address the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which remain the leading cause of death globally.

“As lifestyle-related heart conditions continue to rise, it is imperative that we recognise and confront common heart ailments such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart attacks, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest,” said Professor Goma.

He stressed that understanding these conditions and their risk factors—including smoking, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, stress, and family history—is central to effective prevention and long-term heart health.

Professor Goma further highlighted the importance of World Heart Day as a vital platform for public education, community engagement, and policy advocacy.

“This day reminds us to be proactive—through regular screening, healthier habits, and timely medical care. We call on policymakers to invest more in accessible, preventive, and cardiac care services across Zambia and beyond,” he urged.

The Society is encouraging all citizens to take practical steps toward better heart health by adopting heart-healthy lifestyles: engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress effectively, and scheduling routine medical check-ups.

Professor Goma also underscored the critical role of cardiologists and heart care units in guiding patients through diagnosis, treatment, and long-term wellness, calling for increased support for health professionals working in the cardiovascular field.

This year’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” serves as both a medical and metaphorical reminder—to never neglect the rhythm of life: the heartbeat.

As Zambia marks World Heart Day 2025, the Zambia Society for Hypertension urges the public to remember that every heartbeat counts.

“Let this day be a powerful reminder to protect your heart. Don’t miss a beat,” Professor Goma concluded.

Researchers have found that hydrogen sulfide, the gas behind the smell of farts, doubles as a signaling molecule in the body.

In small amounts, it keeps blood vessels flexible, boosts circulation, lowers blood pressure, and shields cells from damage by cutting oxidative stress.

Some studies hint it might also reduce risks of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage.

Though toxic in large quantities, the tiny amounts made in the gut can benefit cardiovascular and cellular health.

POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR DIFILING HIS 6 YEAR OLD STEP DAUGHTER

A police officer in Mazabuka has been arrested for allegedly defiling his 6-year-old stepdaughter, leaving her with serious injuries to her private parts.

The alleged abuse reportedly occurred multiple times over a period of several days.
According to a statement by Southern Province Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka, Mazabuka Central Police Station received the report on September 26, 2025, at 22:14 hours.

The complaint was lodged by a 32-year-old woman of Motel Compound, who is the mother of the victim and has been cohabiting with the accused since May 2025.

Police say the alleged incidents occurred between September 21 and September 26, 2025, at an unmarked residence in Motel Compound.

Brief facts of the case indicate that on September 21, the complainant left her daughter in the care of her partner while she went to work.

Upon returning home that night, she found the accused lying in the same bed with the child, dressed only in boxer shorts.

When questioned, the officer claimed the child was afraid to sleep alone.
The situation escalated on September 26, when the child complained of itching in her private parts. Upon examining her, the mother noticed unusual discharge.

After being questioned, the child revealed that the accused had been sexually abusing her during the times her mother was away.

Police responded promptly and apprehended the suspect, who is currently in lawful custody.

A medical report form was issued, and the child was taken to Mazabuka General Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination.

WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY : ZAMBIA’S MODERN CONTRACEPTIVE USE AMONG MARRIED WOMEN RISES TO 52% – MINISTRY OF HEALTH

The Ministry of Health has announced that the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) for modern methods among married women in Zambia has reached 52%, a significant stride in the nation’s reproductive health agenda.

Speaking during a media briefing in commemoration of World Contraception Day falls annually on 26th September , Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi emphasized that access to contraception is not only a health intervention but a cornerstone of gender equality, education, and economic development.

“Access to contraception goes beyond health—it’s fundamental to enabling girls to stay in school, empowering women to make informed life choices, and unlocking broader economic growth,” said Dr. Lishimpi.

To support this progress, the government has increased its domestic funding for reproductive health commodities to $4.5 million for 2025, a 67% increase from 2023. Dr. Lishimpi noted that this funding boost is part of a deliberate strategy to address systemic challenges, including funding constraints and supply chain inefficiencies.

He further highlighted the life-saving potential of sustained investment in family planning, stating that by 2026, Zambia could prevent over 730,000 unintended pregnancies, nearly 1,000 maternal deaths, and more than 17,000 child deaths.

Delivering remarks at the same event, UNFPA Zambia Country Representative Seth Broekman said this year’s World Contraception Day, themed “A Choice for All: Agency, Intention, Access,” underscores the need for reliable supply chains, expanded contraceptive options, and concerted efforts to combat misinformation surrounding reproductive health.

Sat-Zambia Emphasizes Role of Media in Combating Gender-Based Violence

Lusaka, Zambia – SAT-Zambia has underscored the vital role of informed, ethical, and responsive media coverage in reshaping societal norms and tackling sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Speaking during a media orientation on key provisions of the Children’s Code Act and the Marriage (Amendment) Act of 2023, SAT-Zambia Country Director Lenganji Nanyangwe said the media plays a pivotal role in disseminating information about progressive legislation and highlighting its significance to the public.

“We believe that the media must be empowered to frame narratives that truly reflect the lived experiences of victims,” said Ms. Nanyangwe. “Laws like the Marriage Code and Children’s Code are transformative, but their impact depends on how well they are understood and embraced by society.”

The orientation was part of broader efforts to equip journalists with the knowledge and tools needed to report sensitively and accurately on issues of child protection and gender justice.

Also speaking at the event, UNFPA Deputy Representative Anna Holmström stressed the importance of training not only for media personnel but also for faith leaders, who are often frontline responders in communities affected by SGBV.

“It is essential that both the media and faith leaders are empowered to speak out and act against gender-based violence. They are trusted voices in society,” said Holmström.

Meanwhile, Reverend Fr. Emmanuel Chikoya of the Anglican Council of East and Southern Africa echoed the need for religious institutions to actively engage in efforts to end SGBV.

“The Church is always present in people’s lives. It must be a champion in the fight against this vice,” said Fr. Chikoya.

The media orientation marked a collaborative step toward ensuring that Zambia’s new legislative frameworks are not only enforced but also understood and supported by the wider public.
