The African Union (AU) is eyeing Zimbabweโs innovative "Heritage-Based Education 5.0" philosophy as a potential blueprint for transforming educational systems across the continent.
Speaking after paying a courtesy call on Zimbabweโs Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, the AU Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, H.E. Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, expressed high praise for the country's localized approach to higher education.
The high-level visit is part of an official benchmarking mission by the African Union. The delegation aims to study how Zimbabwe has successfully reoriented its educational framework to prioritize legacy, local resources, and technological innovation.
Originally launched to shift universities away from traditional, purely academic theory, the Education 5.0 model anchors learning on five core pillars: teaching, research, community outreach, innovation, and industrialization. By marrying modern science with indigenous knowledge and local resources the "heritage" aspect the philosophy aims to produce graduates who create jobs and tangible goods rather than just seeking employment.
According to Prof. Banyankimbona, the model is increasingly being viewed by the AU as a powerful catalyst for broader educational transformation across Africa, aligning closely with the continent's goals for self-reliance and sustainable development.
