TWO die, several injured in Mushindamo road accident, police say
TWO people died on the spot while several others sustained injuries in a road traffic accident that occurred yesterday around 04:45 hours opposite Kabombomene Primary School in Mushindamo District, along the Solwezi–Chingola road.
Police spokesperson Geoffrey Chilabi said the accident involved a Zhong Tong bus, registration BCF 220ZM, belonging to Likili Bus Services and carrying 64 passengers, and a Scania truck, registration numbers T865 DVP and T983 DVA.
He said the bus was travelling from Solwezi to Chingola.
Mr Chilabi said preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when the truck driver, who was heading towards Solwezi, improperly overtook another vehicle at a curve.
“The bus, coming from the opposite direction, collided with the rear trailer of the truck,” he said.
He said the two fatalities included the bus driver, identified as Anthony Mwamba, aged between 45 and 55 of Lusaka, and the bus inspector, George Gondwe, aged 43, of Mush*tala compound.
Mr Chilabi said five passengers sustained serious injuries, while 32 others suffered minor injuries and were treated and discharged.
“The truck driver, believed to be a Tanzanian national, escaped unhurt and fled the scene.
“The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem, while the injured passengers have been admitted to the same hospital,” Mr Chilabi said.
He has urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when overtaking, and assured the public that investigations into the accident are ongoing.
