EMA has called for urgent action to address environmental degradation around the Deka River in Hwange. During oral evidence before Parliament, the agency urged the declaration of a national environmental disaster, increased funding for environmental protection, the speedy passage of the EMA Amendment Bill, 2026, and stronger environmental monitoring to ensure mining leaves communities better , not worse—off.

Zimbabwe is strengthening its commitment to community-led conservation, with Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu reaffirming the vital role of communities in protecting the country's natural resources.

Speaking at the Annual National Convention on the Future of Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM), Dr. Ndlovu said sustainably managed community conservancies can drive rural development while safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

The convention brought together government, traditional leaders, conservation partners and civil society to explore the future of community-led natural resource management in Zimbabwe.

Ministry of Environment, CARE International Zimbabwe Explore Collaboration on Climate Action and Community Resilience

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Mr Simon Masanga, has met with the newly appointed CARE International Zimbabwe Country Director, Ms Delilah Takawira, to explore opportunities for strengthened collaboration in addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

Discussions centred on areas of shared interest, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity and wildlife conservation, disaster risk reduction, sustainable natural resource management, renewable energy, and supporting women, youth, and local communities to play a greater role in environmental stewardship.

The Ministry outlined key national initiatives aimed at advancing environmental protection and climate resilience, including the National Clean-Up Programme, National Tree Planting Programme, Wetlands Restoration Programme, National Adaptation Plan, biodiversity conservation efforts, human-wildlife coexistence initiatives, sustainable forest management, and environmental awareness campaigns.

Both institutions expressed commitment to developing strategic partnerships that enhance climate resilience, safeguard Zimbabwe’s natural heritage, and contribute to sustainable development for current and future generations.

Black Rhinos Return to Matusadona After More Than Three Decades

Black rhinos have returned to Matusadona National Park more than 30 years after organized poaching wiped out the park's population.

The animals are the direct descendants of rhinos that were evacuated from Matusadona decades ago, marking the restoration of the park's original bloodline rather than the introduction of a new population.

The milestone represents a significant step in Zimbabwe's ongoing wildlife conservation efforts and reflects years of collaboration between conservation organisations, government authorities and local communities to restore the species to its former range.

The reintroduction was made possible through a partnership involving the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, African Parks, Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservancy, Matusadona Conservation Trust and other stakeholders.

Conservationists say the return of the black rhinos is an important milestone for the long-term restoration of Matusadona's ecosystem and demonstrates the impact of sustained conservation efforts.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife conducted a fact-finding mission to Buhera following a petition by residents over Sabi Star Mine's operations.

The Committee verified concerns including dust pollution and water contamination. It also established that while some issues raised fell under the responsibility of the local council.

Parliament has passed the Climate Change Management Bill [H.B. 5A, 2025] after approving amendments to Clauses 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 18 and 37 during the Consideration Stage. The amended Bill was adopted before the Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Hon. Evelyn Ndlovu, moved its Third Reading. Parliament approved the motion, and the Bill was read a third time, completing its passage through the House and moving it a step closer to becoming law.

The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife today visited Sabi Star Mine in Buhera, Manicaland Province, for a verification exercise on issues related to mining activities in the area.

The Committee engaged communities in Ward 12, assessed the impact of mining activities on surrounding areas, including St Albans Primary School in Ward 11, and concluded the visit with a stakeholders' meeting in Murambinda.

The visit is part of Parliament's oversight role to gather first-hand information and engage affected communities and stakeholders.
