The Makers of The Telling Room

Yip, that’s us - the company behind Zimbabwe’s first fantasy thriller film! When we started (what seems like several lifetimes ago but is actually about a year) we just wanted to make a fantasy movie that was as cool as all the fantasy movies we love - think: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas. There’s something about watching these stories - the heart, the friendships, the truths, the absurdity, magic coming to life before your eyes - that had a profound effect on Duncan and I. (I’m Kristi-lee, in case you didn’t know). It seemed right that our next step in life would be to create that magic ourselves for the rest of the world to enjoy. We started shooting The Telling Room at the beginning of 2017 and carried on right through the year, through the cash crisis that hit in March and through the coup later on that rocked our nation in more ways than one! And now we’re here, at the dawn of a new era we all never thought we’d see, contemplating our role in this new society and, I must confess, it seems fitting to me that at the turn of the tide, Mudbug Films is making the first international-standard feature film with an all-Zimbabwean cast and crew, shot entirely in our homeland, bringing magic to life for the world to see! Our crew, Dean, Chase and Kyle are the reckless, wild youth helping us spearhead this incredible project as the nation cheers us on. It’s been a humbling, eye-opening, outlandish and fantastic experience so far. Here’s to the many more films Mudbug will be making here in Zimbabwe in the future, and here’s to The Telling Room, the film that started it all!
