The family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has won its court case in the South African Supreme Court against President Hakainde Hichilema’s government and can now bury him where the family wishes, bringing an end to an embarrassing saga that has dragged on since 5 June 2025, when the former president died.

Until now, Lungu’s body had remained in a South African mortuary for a year after Hichilema’s government insisted that he be buried in Zambia at the country’s presidential burial site.
The ruling affirms the family’s right to determine the final resting place of the former president and brings closure to a dispute that attracted significant attention across the region.

The family had agreed to Edgar Lungu being buried in Zambia on the condition that President Hakainde Hichilema would not play a central role in the funeral proceedings, something the Zambian government dismissed. They subsequently opted for South Africa, maintaining that Lungu had left clear instructions that he did not want Hichilema to preside over or be associated with his funeral.

A similar situation occurred in Zimbabwe following the death of former President Robert Mugabe. Despite government plans for him to be buried at the National Heroes Acre, Mugabe had made it known that he did not wish to be interred there. After a prolonged dispute with his family, the Zimbabwean government eventually accepted the family’s wishes, and Mugabe was buried at his rural home in Kutama instead.

Sengezo Tshabangu's camp is threatening a "nuclear option" as negotiations with Zanu PF over CAB3 appear to be hitting a dead end.

The warning comes just days after Tshabangu-aligned MPs helped the ruling party secure the numbers needed to pass the controversial constitutional amendment in the National Assembly.

With the Bill now before the Senate, all eyes are on whether Tshabangu's faction will continue backing CAB3 or unleash the political leverage it says remains at its disposal.

Armed police stormed the offices of the Constitution Defenders Forum, a movement led by former Finance Minister Tendai Biti and at the forefront of opposition to CAB3.

The raid came hours after the arrest of the group's Harare programmes director, Paul Gorekore, with police reportedly seizing T-shirts, flyers and other campaign materials.

The organisation has condemned the operation as an attempt to intimidate citizens campaigning against the controversial constitutional amendments that could extend President Mnangagwa's stay in office.

GOVERNMENT spokesperson Ndabaningi Mangwana has called former Botswana President Ian Khama a washed-up has-been for criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3).

CAB3 seeks to extend Mnangagwa’s stay in office, lengthen the life of Parliament and totally do away with Presidential elections by introducing a system where legislators will be the only ones with that mandate.

It has already been debated and passed in the National Assembly and looks likely to be signed into law by July this year.

Khama had queried the Bill’s intent, how Parliamentarians were allowed to receive financial inducement to support it, and put Zimbabwe on a list of African countries whose leaders have amended constitutions so as to stay in power.

“Here we go again. Another power-hungry President has the constitution amended through rigging and cash inducements to extend his term of office,” said Khama on Facebook.

“Zimbabwe has now become the latest in a growing list of countries whose presidents want to cling to power and manipulate the constitution to achieve that.

“As I told Job Sikhala at the launch of his book “Footprints in the chains,” the only thing that has changed since Rhodesia and Ian Smith, is the name of his country and that of its leaders. Oppressors come in all colours.”
