The death toll for Kariba (RIDA) boat accident has risen to 92 following the recovery of eight more bodies from Lake Kariba today -ZRP

In a statement, the police also announced that ongoing operations deployed by the Commissioner General of Police since August 11, 2026, include over 40 Sub Aqua unit members, four vessels, and multi agency coordination to search for victims, recover bodies, and assist with identification.

Relatives seeking information are advised to contact the Command Centre in Kariba or local police stations.

LATEST | OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE KARIBA BOAT ACCIDENT

_11 August 2026_

The Civil Protection Unit (CPU), Mashonaland West, has issued an official update on the boat accident that occurred on Lake Kariba.

According to information verified through ticket records, the boat was carrying 114 adult passengers, in addition to five crew members and an undisclosed number of children who were below the ticketing age.

The boat’s stated carrying capacity was 90 passengers, meaning the vessel was carrying significantly more people than its designated capacity.

*Current Rescue and Recovery Situation*

As of the latest update:
77 people have been rescued by Matusadona rescue teams and other responding teams.

The rescued survivors are currently on Long Island in Lake Kariba.
The CPU has mobilised boats to transport the survivors from Long Island to the mainland.

This operation is currently underway.
15 bodies have been recovered. Two funeral parlours have been engaged to collect and process the recovered bodies.

Based on the figures currently available, approximately 27 people remain unaccounted for.
The Sub-Aqua Unit has been airlifted to the accident scene to strengthen ongoing search and rescue operations.

The CPU emphasises that these figures represent the situation as of the latest assessment and may change as search, rescue and recovery operations continue.

Further updates will be issued as verified information becomes available.

*Recommendation for Declaration of Disaster*

In view of the scale of the incident, the Civil Protection Unit,

Mashonaland West, recommends that the accident be declared a State of Disaster to facilitate an enhanced and coordinated response to the emergency.
