NEW CLINICS TO CUT WALKING DISTANCE TO HEALTH CENTRES IN MAKONI

Great news for the people of Makoni.

Makoni Rural District Council is constructing 9 new health centres in partnership with ZPCS, the Air Force of Zimbabwe, churches, local communities, and Members of Parliament. The aim is to reduce the average walking distance to a clinic from 7 km to 5 km, bringing healthcare services closer to the people.

The district currently has 53 health centres serving a population of 288,444 across 787,050 hectares.

Projects currently under construction include: • Mapere Clinic – 36% • Rumano – 10% • Dewerwi – 10% • Mutiwegora – 15% • Mambudzi Clinic – 40% • Chiropa Clinic – 60% • Chimbike Clinic – 60% • Denzva Clinic – 20%

In addition, the Roman Catholic Church has completed Monte Casino Private Hospital.

To improve maternal healthcare, waiting mothers' homes are being built at all 53 rural health centres. So far, 41 have already been completed, while more are under construction at Tsikada and Mubvurungwa with support from partners such as World Vision and PetroZim. Staff accommodation is also being expanded to accommodate newly recruited healthcare workers.

The Government has also deployed a second ambulance to Weya Rural Hospital, donated by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, to strengthen emergency response services in remote areas. This is expected to save lives and reduce the high transport costs previously faced by many families.

A few months ago, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Manicaland reportedly convened a meeting after concerns were raised that Manicaland was lagging behind other provinces in terms of development. Since then, many people have observed renewed efforts across the province, with Members of Parliament, local authorities, and other stakeholders working hard to accelerate development and ensure that projects are delivered to communities. The progress being witnessed in Makoni is seen by many as part of that broader drive to transform Manicaland.

These developments are part of the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare and infrastructure across Zimbabwe. Supporters of the Government see them as reflecting President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's vision of "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo" and the commitment to "leave no place and no one behind." Across the country, schools, clinics, dams, bridges, roads, and other infrastructure projects continue to take shape. Supporters say this demonstrates that the Government is building the nation brick by brick, turning promises into visible results.

As a country, we need to review and reform our education system. We should not continue to rely on a colonial-era education model without questioning whether it still meets the needs of Zimbabwe today.

Is there still a real need for A-Level? In my view, the two years spent at A-Level may not always add enough value for every student. Those who complete O-Level should have clearer and more flexible pathways, whether to university, technical colleges, vocational training, or apprenticeships. By the age of 18, many young people should already be well on their way to building careers and contributing to the economy.

Many successful countries have modernised their education systems:

Germany offers strong vocational and apprenticeship pathways that lead directly into skilled employment and higher education.

Finland allows students to choose between academic and vocational upper secondary education, with both routes respected and leading to further study.

Singapore provides multiple pathways after secondary school, including junior colleges, polytechnics, and technical institutes, depending on students' strengths and career goals.

The United States generally admits students to university after high school without requiring an A-Level equivalent.

Canada also allows students to enter university directly after completing secondary school, based on their school results.

Rather than copying any one country, Zimbabwe could design an education system that suits its own development goals, one that prepares young people for university, entrepreneurship, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and other key sectors of our economy.

SPECIAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT: THE TWO FACES OF JUSTICE IN ZIMBABWE

​HARARE — There is a bitter, heartbreaking irony playing out across the towns, industrial areas, and business centers of Zimbabwe today.

​If a local youth opens a small tuckshop in Chitungwiza, Highfield, or Mkoba to feed his family, authorities descend on him like a swarm of hornets. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), municipal police, and border officials will ruthlessly confiscate his small boxes of cooking oil, soap, and biscuits. Why? Because he missed a small duty payment or lacks a municipal permit. To the state, the struggling local trader is a criminal who must be crushed in the name of revenue collection.

​Yet, just a few avenues away in our industrial sites, or out in the commercial fields, massive, unregistered companies run by foreign nationals particularly Chinese syndicates—are operating multi-million dollar businesses completely outside the law. They run factories, construction projects, logistics hubs, and retail wholesale networks every single week under the radar.

​They pay zero taxes to ZIMRA. They pay zero levies to the National Employment Councils (NEC). They completely bypass the National Social Security Authority (NSSA).

​Why is the government aggressively hunting down poor widows selling tomatoes and bread, while turning a completely blind eye to massive unregistered companies looting our national economy?

​The Silent Crisis: Modern-Day Slavery in the Workplace

​Behind the closed gates of these lawless operations, Zimbabwean citizens are being reduced to modern-day slaves on their own ancestral land.

​Local workers, drivers, technicians, and laborers are forced into brutal 12-to-16-hour shifts with zero overtime pay. There is absolutely no job security; it is a lawless system of "hire and fire." A worker can serve a business perfectly for months or years, but the moment they ask for their lawful salary, standard safety equipment, or a basic food allowance, they are thrown out of the gate like garbage. They leave with no terminal benefits, no written contracts, and no legal recourse.

​Worse, when these workers try to stand up for their rights, they face brutal victimization, stalking, and harassment. Management actively hunts them down even at temporary piece-work sites just to destroy their reputations and take away their alternate livelihoods.

​A Direct Question to the Authorities

​Our national wealth is being drained, our workers are being broken, and our treasury is being starved of billions in vital revenue. We must ask the hard questions directly to those sworn to protect us:

​To the Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare: Why are your labor inspectors missing from these factories and industrial sites? Why are Zimbabwean workers left entirely unprotected while law-breaking employers completely rewrite the Labour Act to suit themselves?

​To ZIMRA (Zimbabwe Revenue Authority): Why is your energy spent raiding small tuckshops and cross-border traders while massive, unregistered corporate entities generate millions in cash without paying a single cent in corporate tax or PAYE?

​To the National Employment Councils (NEC): Why do your local conciliation processes drag out past the statutory 30-day limits, allowing law-breaking employers to exhaust, frustrate, and starve poor workers who are just demanding their basic unpaid salaries?

​The Bottom Line: A country that crushes its poorest local traders while pampering lawless corporate syndicates is a country losing its moral compass. The economic space of our nation belongs to the people of Zimbabwe. The labor that builds it deserves dignity, fair wages, and the full protection of the law.

​It is time for the authorities to wake up, stop chasing tuckshops, and police the factories, boardrooms, and work sites where the real economic sabotage is taking place.
