SOUTH MINING CONSIDERS 300MW POWER PLANT AS COAL SALES STRUGGLE DEEPENS
South Mining is producing almost twice as much coal as it can currently sell, prompting the company to consider constructing a 300MW power plant to utilise its excess thermal coal.
South Mining General Manager Victor Farai Rakabopa told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development that ZPC currently orders only about 70,000 tonnes of coal, leaving the company with a significant surplus.
The proposed 300MW power plant would create an alternative market for the excess thermal coal and allow South Mining to convert the stranded resource into electricity.
Rakabopa said South Mining’s coal seam contains about 11 metres of coal, but only around 3 metres is suitable for coking coal, which has stronger demand. The remaining 8 metres is largely thermal coal, which the company is struggling to sell.
