Friend Turned Killer: Harare Man Arrested in Brutal Slaying

By Tanaka Mutadzakupa

A 28-year-old Harare man has been arrested after allegedly killing his friend, sucking his blood and burying the body in a shallow grave at Warren Hills Cemetery in a disturbing murder case.

The suspect, identified as Shepherd Severa, allegedly slit the throat of his friend, Brian Nandana, with a kitchen knife before sucking his blood and burying the body at the cemetery. The victim’s body was later recovered with a deep cut on the neck and a scar on the back of the head.

The case came to light following the recovery of a blood-stained Toyota Aqua vehicle, registration number AGO 2804, at Warren Hills Cemetery on 19 May 2026 at around 0400 hours.

Investigations reportedly led to the arrest of Severa, who allegedly confessed to the murder and later led investigators to the shallow grave where the victim had been buried.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the arrest, adding that investigations into the full circumstances surrounding the murder are still in progress.

Nationwide Blitz Targets Illegal Carrying of Weapons

Story by Tanaka Mutadzakupa

A wave of arrests is sweeping across the country as authorities tighten the noose on individuals carrying dangerous weapons in public under the ongoing “No to Knives in Pockets/Inqgamu Idingani Esikhwameni/Banga Rinodei Muhomwe” operation.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the intensified crackdown is aimed at curbing violent crimes involving dangerous weapons such as knives, machetes and catapults, which are commonly linked to cases of murder, attempted murder and robbery.

In a recent statement, the police confirmed that 15 suspects were arrested on 18 May 2026 during stop-and-search operations conducted in various parts of the country.

The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects apprehended under the operation to 346 since its launch on 9 May 2026.

Authorities said the operation will continue nationwide as part of efforts to enhance public safety and reduce violent criminal activities.

Members of the public have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers during stop-and-search exercises and report anyone found carrying dangerous weapons to the nearest police station.

Police Launch Three-Day Crime Awareness Campaign in Mashonaland East

Staff Reporter

MARONDERA – The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a three-day crime awareness campaign in Mashonaland East Province targeting farmers, students, and communities as part of efforts to curb rising criminal activities.

The campaign is being conducted by the Police General Headquarters command comprising the Press and Public Relations Department, Victim Friendly Unit (VFU), and Anti-Stock Theft Unit.

Activities started this Tuesday at Marondera To***co Auction Floors, where farmers were sensitised on crimes affecting the agricultural sector, including side marketing, stock theft, counterfeit farming inputs, domestic violence, and drug and substance abuse.

Police urged farmers to travel during daylight using roadworthy vehicles to avoid robbery cases associated with mechanical breakdowns.

Officers also noted an increase in domestic violence cases after to***co sales and encouraged farmers to consult their spouses on the use of proceeds from to***co sales.

The campaign further highlighted the dangers of drug and substance abuse, with police warning that many crimes are committed under the influence of drugs, which also negatively affects farming productivity.

The awareness programme will continue tomorrow at the Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and Cherutombo High School before concluding on May 21, at Kushinga Phikelele Polytechnic and Chief Nenguwo’s homestead in Mahusekwa.

SMALLHOLDER farmers in Seke District are optimistic of recording a good harvest of traditional grains following continued training and support aimed at strengthening climate resilience.

As climate change continues to disrupt farming patterns across the country, many farmers who have embraced traditional grains as a mitigation measure against erratic rainfall are expecting improved yields this season.

Among them is Martin Matsa, a farmer in Seke District who has ventured into sorghum production alongside many other growers embracing traditional grains farming.

“We planted this crop in December, while some of the fields were planted in January. We have 30 hectares under the crop in four different blocks. This particular field was planted on January 20 this year. We used five bags of fertiliser, which cost about US$150, and about 10 kilogrammes of seed costing around US$15 per hectare. Sorghum can be grown with limited inputs.”

Agriculture experts have been impressed by the crop quality.

Agronomist Mr Blessing Hatidane said sorghum remains a viable crop due to its low input requirements and favourable yields.

“One can plant between five and 10 kilogrammes of sorghum seed per hectare. Four to five bags of Compound D fertiliser are required per hectare. The expected yield ranges between one-and-a-half tonnes and two tonnes per hectare, which is a good return,” he said.

Agriculture Extension Worker for Tsholotsho, Mr Elisha Bepete, said the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme continues to improve traditional grain production in dry regions.

“The Pfumvudza programme is increasing our traditional grain yields in Tsholotsho. Tsholotsho is a dry area where traditional grains perform better than maize,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Tocek Investments (Zadzamatura), Dr Daniel Myers, said commercial farmers have an important role in producing quality seed for distribution to farmers across different ecological regions.

“Today, we are holding a sorghum field day here at a crop grown by a commercial farmer. We want commercial farmers to produce quality seed that can be distributed to farmers across the country in different ecological zones. It is important for farmers to plant with the first rains so that the crop matures before the peak bird-breeding period in February.”

Seke District Agriculture Extension Worker, Mr Hardson Mutsvangwa, said government has intensified efforts to help farmers combat migratory birds, which remain one of the major threats to sorghum production.

“We have observed that due to climate change, maize yields are declining while traditional grains are performing better because of their high tolerance to dry conditions. Traditional grains also have nutritional and health benefits. Government has put in place mechanisms to control migratory birds and pests. We encourage farmers to use various bird-scaring methods, including ringing bells and approved chemical methods.”

Experts say traditional grains are becoming increasingly important in addressing the effects of climate change due to their resilience to extreme weather conditions and erratic rainfall patterns.

TODAY’S VERSE 🙏🏼

_“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”_ — Isaiah 40:31

Life will not always be easy, and there will be moments when you feel tired, uncertain, or discouraged. But God’s promise reminds us that strength does not come from ourselves alone — it comes from trusting Him completely.

Every day is another opportunity to rise stronger, wiser, and more faithful than before. The challenges you face today are preparing you for the blessings ahead. Do not allow temporary struggles to make you forget how far you have already come.

Keep believing even when progress feels slow. Keep moving even when the road seems difficult. God sees your prayers, your effort, and your silent battles. In His perfect time, your breakthrough will come.

May your days ahead be filled with renewed energy, peace of mind, open doors, and endless reasons to smile. May your faith remain stronger than your fears, and may God guide every step you take. ✨🙏🏼
