Luckson Sandai (53), from Burma Valley, set his marital home on fire while his two children were sleeping inside following a dispute with his wife, Martha Gutukunhuwa.

The incident occurred after Martha had travelled to Mozambique to buy fish and vegetables for resale. She was expected back the following day but failed to return, which angered Sandai, who accused her of engaging in prostitution in the neighbouring country.

Following the quarrel, Sandai left home and later returned in the evening carrying two litres of petrol and a machete.Sensing danger, Martha fled the house and stood about five metres away, leaving their two children, aged three and four, asleep inside.

Sandai sprinkled petrol around the house and set it ablaze. Martha rushed back, managed to rescue the children, and escaped.

The matter was reported to the police and Sandai was arrested. He has since been sentenced to three years in prison for arson.
