About 42 kilometres east of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, stands Melfort Old People’s Home, a retirement facility for elderly men and women with nowhere else to go. Most residents are men, many of them lifelong bachelors. The home also houses women, largely widows. Many of the residents have no surviving children or close relatives. A significant number came to Zimbabwe as migrant labourers, having spent their working years on farms, in mines, or in domestic service.

The cholera outbreak that swept through Zimbabwe in 2008-2009 killed more than 4,000 people and sickened nearly 100,000. Parts of Harare and its surrounding suburbs were especially hard hit, and in the aftermath, attention fell on the unreliability of the capital city’s aging infrastructure. The government ultimately secured a US$144 million loan from China Exim Bank to overhaul the city’s water treatment network.

HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Eliza Mandove was a child when her brother was killed during Zimbabwe’s war for independence. She was beaten during the same attack and sustained injuries to her hands and legs. Now 46, Mandove has no motor function in her left hand and struggles to walk and carry heavy loads. She suffers from chronic headaches. She can’t work in the fields. Her husband once farmed, but years of drought and erratic rainfall have led to diminishing yields.

HARARE, ZIMBABWE — The vendors rarely see it coming. The municipal police, some in plainclothes and others in uniform, move through the crowd silent and unnoticed. When they finally strike, panic erupts. Vendors scatter, trampling their goods and grabbing what they can. A few are arrested. Their wares are seized and tossed into the back of a police truck.
“They have no mercy at all. Once they take your stock, you’ll never get it back,” says Saul Nhema, an informal vendor who has been selling vegetables for three months after losing his job as a construction worker.

HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Not long ago, grass and flowers grew on the wetland in Borrowdale. Flocks of birds — including red and yellow bishops — were common here, and butterflies too.
“Everything from anthills, fig trees and flowers. People took walks there to enjoy the tranquility of the place,” says Brian Foster Mawer, a resident of Dandaro Retirement Village, which abuts the wetland.
