The World In Hands

The World In Hands The World in Hands is a photoblog project. We are showcasing people's stories, passions, interests, and hobbies. We want to be the platform for those narratives.

We believe in the power of voices and the uniqueness of everyone's narratives.

“I have a car, I have an American passport, conventional attractiveness, and, like, colorism “works” on my side as a Black person. All these kinds of things can work in my favor in many contexts, and simultaneously, they can do harm. And this can change city by city, community by community, person by person.” — says Tatyana Brown as we continue our conversation about discrimination and power.

“I don't think tech is like a “saviour.” I don't think it's inherently good. I think tech is opinionated. I think it shapes people's behaviours. And I think that as designers, this is something we think about a lot.” — says Pauline Wee, a soon-to-be sophomore NYUAD student from the Philippines, reflecting on technology as a designer. ✨

WE HAVE EXPANDED!

The moment has come for The World in Hands to conquer a new platform.

Instagram will hold some of the most precious moments and snippets of our interviews and the photos we take.
But starting from today, you will be also able to hear the full extent of our interviews. Right now you can listen to our first episode on Apple Podcasts. But soon enough you’ll find us on Spotify, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music.

This week will be special. This week we are releasing two episodes! 🤍

Episode one is brought to you as a cosy “get-to-know-us,” in which we touch upon all things personal, from our takes on social media and privacy, to our interests and passions, to some little details that have shaped the people we have grown to become. Episode two will be the full-length version of one of the interviews already posted here!

Listen to episode one: a windy get-together NOW on Apple Podcasts!

“Sometimes I’ll be having conversations with somebody in China, and somebody at Oxford, and somebody in New York, and, you know, maybe, some friends of mine in California. So it's really weird to be in this super multinational set of conversations while I'm serving up the soundtrack, and it's really fun,” says Bryan Waterman, while showing us his set-up for Howler Radio✨🤍

“So, definitely, there have been lost years, in my opinion, and there's no way of getting them back. But the way I'm starting to reframe it is to think, “This chapter of my life is done and I'm ready to make up for these lost experiences somewhere else.” — We talked to Ayham, a soon-to-be NYUAD alumnus, who reflected on his university years and the impact of the pandemic on his life as a student. ✨

“The art scene in the UAE is very fresh. But actually what’s happening here is the kind of place where so many different cultures collide,” says Mahnaz Fancy, cultural critic, while talking about the shifts she has seen in the UAE arts scene.

Holding a desire to celebrate women today, we invited Gwyneth Bravo, historical musicologist, cellist, and educator cellist whose research examines the relationship between music, politics, and philosophy in twentieth and twenty-first-century European and global contexts, with a focus on nationalism, exile, forced migration, gender, and conflict to speak to us about her contribution to the book “Biographies of Women in the Third Reich and in Exile” - in German: Lebenswege von Musikerinnen im Dritten Reich und im Exil.

“In the same key, I think that the path and professionalization for women musicians and scholars is, generally, challenging, even without the kinds of political histories that are the focus of the book, and, perhaps, may be more challenging [than for men].” - says Bravo

Tag in the comments a woman that inspires you every day! Let’s celebrate this occasion together🤍✨
