Hearing from God sometimes requires a lot of waiting. In fact, many people never hear God speak to them because they never wait long enough to hear what he has to say. But the Bible is full of promises about what happens when you wait on God. One of those is in the book of Isaiah: “They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31 ESV).
So how do you wait on God? The psalms give three ways:
Wait quietly. “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him” (Psalm 62:5 NLT). When you wait in the quiet—with nothing around to distract you—your body and spirit calm down, preparing you to hear from God.
Wait patiently. “Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act” (Psalm 37:7 NLT). Take all the time needed to focus on God and feel his presence. You’re never wasting time when you’re waiting on God.
Wait expectantly. “I wait expectantly, trusting God to help, for he has promised” (Psalm 130:5 TLB). God has promised to talk to you if you’ll take the time to listen. So come before him in faith, waiting in expectation that he will meet you.
Waiting doesn’t come naturally to most people today, so if you’re not used to waiting for God, it will take some practice—but it’s worth it! Wait for God quietly, patiently, and expectantly—and you’ll eventually hear him speak to your heart.
