Yesterday evening, I dropped a punnet of blueberries and around 25 sprawled themselves out across my kitchen floor however, I was in a rush to leave and thought ‘I’ll have to pick them up when I get home’. I got home around 8 and had to put my 2 year old straight to bed. I came downstairs and saw the big blue balls and thought ‘oh forget this, I’ll tidy them up in the morning’. Some call me lazy, some call me burned out, some call me ADHD riddled but hey ho.
My daughter slept in my bed last night and we had safety gates on. She did NOT wake up until 7am when we both came downstairs together. I laid in bed from 8.30pm until 1am doom scrolling on my phone and did not hear a peep downstairs.
We come downstairs this morning and my daughter runs to the sofa and I go to clean up last nights lazy blueberries and what do I see?? Why, I see the cleanest floor known to man. No evidence of a blueberry, none squished on the floor, none rolled through a crack. I check the bin and they are not in the bin. My first thought is that I have a large rodent living with me who pays no rent and parties all night but I have no other evidence of such. No droppings, no urine, no odour, no gnaw marks on any wires, no noises at night at all, no fibres, and the bread, wraps and packaged items I leave out on my kitchen surface due to lack of cupboard space has never been nibbled at all.
Well now I’m thinking, do I have a friendly ghost? Is it Caspar? Do I have a squatter who tidied them away? If so, why didn’t they wash the dishes in the sink also?
Did my daughter, who hates blueberries, sneak out of my bed in the middle of the night, parkour over the stair gates over the stairs and run downstairs to eat 25 blueberries before coming up to bed, all without waking me in a bid to keep her secret love of blueberries from me?
I opened the fridge and what made matters even more confusing is that the punnet of blueberries still in the fridge looks…. full? As if none were missing at all. Now I know I do not mop the floors well enough so if I tidied them away and didn’t know about it, they would have been binned.
I have had issues before with lights being on when I came home that were off when I left, items that were in the attic cupboard randomly being on my bedroom floor, and a dirty Tupperware that did not belong to me once being in my sink when I came back from holiday so the question is…..
Am I more likely to have a rat, a ghost, or a secret house guest?
Anyway, as I would with all modes of scientific research, I can confirm I WILL be leaving some strawberries on my floor tonight before bed, so to see the results in the morning. I know variables should not be changed mid study however I have no blueberries left as I binned the punnet this morning before I thought.
