Episode 21

Lisa didn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Riff standing on that bridge, tears in his eyes as he handed her the drawing of the little house.

She held the paper against her chest all night.

As if it were the last piece of him she could still keep.

At 6:12 a.m., her phone vibrated.

Riff.

Her heart leapt.

She answered immediately.

"Hello?"

His voice was quiet.

"Can you meet me?"

"Now?"

"Please."

Something in his tone made her sit up instantly.

"Where?"

"The mango tree."

The same tree where they had spent countless afternoons dreaming about their future.

The same tree where he had once asked her how many children she wanted.

The same tree where she had promised she would wait.

When Lisa arrived, Riff was already there.

He looked different.

Not physically.

But something in his eyes had changed.

She walked toward him quickly.

"You scared me."

He smiled faintly.

"I'm sorry."

"Did something happen?"

He took a slow breath.

"I thought all night."

Her stomach tightened.

"And?"

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then asked softly,

"Are you happy right now?"

She frowned.

"What kind of question is that?"

"Answer me."

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"No."

He nodded slowly.

"Neither am I."

Silence.

The morning breeze moved through the branches above them.

"Riff..."

"I love you."

She blinked.

"I know."

"No."

His voice trembled.

"Listen to me."

"I love you enough to fight for you."

"I love you enough to wait for you."

"I love you enough to spend another six years trying to prove myself."

He swallowed hard.

"But I also love you enough to stop being the reason you cry every night."

Lisa shook her head immediately.

"Don't."

"Your father is not my enemy."

"He believes he's protecting you."

"And I can't build a marriage by turning you against the people who raised you."

"I'm not against them."

"But you're being torn apart."

"I can handle it."

His smile was heartbreaking.

"You shouldn't have to."

She grabbed his hands desperately.

"Then what are you saying?"

He looked down at their intertwined fingers.

The fingers that had fit together so naturally for six years.

"I'm saying..."

His voice cracked.

"I think we should let each other go."

For a moment, Lisa didn't understand the words.

Then they landed.

And the world shattered.

"No."

"Lisa..."

"No."

She pulled her hands away and stepped back.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I'm not deciding for both of us."

"Yes, you are!"

Tears streamed down her face.

"After everything we've been through?"

"After six years?"

"After all our plans?"

"After the house? The children? The promises?"

Riff's eyes filled again.

"Do you think this is easy for me?"

"Then don't do it!"

"And watch you suffer between me and your family?"

"We'll figure it out."

"How?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because deep down...

She didn't know either.

Riff took one step toward her.

"Beautiful..."

She burst into tears at the nickname.

"Please don't call me that."

"I don't know how to call you anything else."

That answer nearly broke her.

He reached into his pocket.

Carefully, he removed the silver bracelet receipt he had kept all these years.

"Do you know why I kept this?"

She shook her head.

"Because that was the first thing I ever bought with money I earned myself."

"And I bought it for you."

His voice became softer.

"Everything good in my life somehow led back to you."

Lisa covered her mouth.

"Then why are you leaving me?"

He looked at her with a sadness she would remember for the rest of her life.

"Because loving someone isn't the same as possessing them."

"Sometimes..."

"Love asks you to step aside."

He pulled her into his arms one last time.

This time, she didn't resist.

She clung to him desperately.

"I don't know how to stop loving you."

His arms tightened around her.

"Neither do I."

"Then don't make me."

He closed his eyes.

A single tear slid down his cheek into her hair.

"I think life already has."

When he finally let her go, he cupped her face gently.

"If one day you hate me for this..."

"I will understand."

"I could never hate you."

His broken smile said he wished he believed her.

Then he stepped back.

Once.

Twice.

And turned away.

"Riff!"

He stopped.

But he didn't turn around.

Lisa's voice shattered behind him.

"If only my parents had said yes..."

His shoulders trembled.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then, without looking back, he whispered,

"If only life had been ready for us."

And he walked away.

Lisa remained beneath the mango tree, clutching the faded drawing of the little house as the man she loved disappeared from her future.

πŸ’” The tragedy wasn't that they stopped loving each other.

The tragedy was that they still loved each other when they said goodbye.

Episode 20

Riff didn't go home immediately.

He drove for hours.

Past busy streets.

Past restaurants filled with laughter.

Past couples walking hand in hand.

Eventually, he parked beside the same bridge where he had once given Lisa the silver bracelet.

The same bridge where they had planned their future.

The same bridge where she had said,

"I can't wait to become your wife."

He rested his forehead against the steering wheel.

For the first time in years...

He allowed himself to break.

His phone rang.

Lisa.

He stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.

"Hello."

Her voice was trembling.

"Where are you?"

"Out."

"I've been calling."

"I know."

"Are you okay?"

He laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he didn't know how else to respond.

"Can I see you?"

"I'm at the bridge."

"I'm coming."

Twenty minutes later, she arrived.

The moment she stepped out of the car, she ran to him.

"Riff..."

He caught her automatically.

She was crying.

Hard.

"I'm so sorry."

"Beautiful..."

"Please don't call me that."

He looked at her in surprise.

"Why?"

"Because it hurts."

That answer nearly shattered him.

They sat on the wooden bench overlooking the water.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, Lisa whispered,

"I argued with my father."

Riff turned to her.

"Don't."

"How can I not?"

"Because he's still your father."

"And you're still the man I love."

His eyes closed briefly.

"That's what makes this so hard."

"Then let's fight for us."

He looked at her.

"What does fighting look like?"

"I don't know."

"More arguments at home?"

"Maybe."

"Tension between you and your parents?"

"Maybe."

"Months of pressure?"

Lisa looked away.

He continued gently.

"You see? Even you don't know."

She turned back to him, desperate.

"Tell me what to do."

Riff was silent for several seconds.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out the folded sketch of the little house.

Lisa's breath caught.

"You still have it."

"Always."

He unfolded it carefully.

The paper was worn from years of being carried in his wallet.

"Do you remember what I wrote at the bottom?"

Lisa nodded through tears.

"Home isn't a place... it's wherever we're together."

Riff smiled sadly.

"I believed that with all my heart."

"I still do."

He looked at the drawing for a long moment.

"But a home should also be a place of peace."

"Not a place where the woman I love is forced to choose between me and her family."

Lisa shook her head violently.

"Don't say that."

"Lisa..."

"No."

"Listen to me."

She covered her face.

"Please."

His voice became unbearably gentle.

"If holding on to me means losing your peace..."

"Then I can't ask you to do it."

Lisa looked at him as though he had struck her.

"Are you leaving me?"

His jaw tightened.

"I'm trying to protect you."

"I don't want protection."

"Then what do you want?"

"You."

That single word almost made him change his mind.

Almost.

He took her hands in his.

"Look at me."

She did.

"If I fight your father and win..."

"I may gain a wife."

"But you may lose the people who raised you."

"And if I walk away..."

His voice broke for the first time.

"I lose the woman I wanted to spend my life with."

Tears rolled down his face now.

Openly.

Honestly.

"Either way, someone loses."

Lisa had never seen him cry before.

That frightened her more than anything.

"Riff..."

"I need you to promise me something."

"Anything."

"If this ends..."

"It will not be because I stopped loving you."

She burst into fresh tears.

"Don't talk like that."

"Promise me."

She couldn't speak.

He squeezed her hands gently.

"Promise me."

Finally, she whispered,

"I promise."

Riff folded the house sketch one last time.

Then, after a long hesitation, he placed it in her hands.

"Keep it."

"No."

"Please."

"It belongs to us."

His smile was heartbreaking.

"Maybe it belongs to our memories now."

The wind blew softly across the bridge.

Lisa clutched the drawing against her chest as though letting go would erase six years of love.

Riff looked out over the dark water.

For the first time...

He allowed himself to imagine a future that did not include her.

And the thought hurt so much he could barely breathe.

πŸ’” Some people walk away because they don't love enough.

Others walk away because they love so deeply that they would rather break their own heart than watch the person they love suffer.

Episode 19

The living room was silent.

So silent that Lisa could hear the ticking of the wall clock.

Her father's gaze rested on Riff.

Riff sat upright, hands clasped together, waiting.

Lisa's heart pounded painfully in her chest.

Her father finally continued.

"But..."

He paused.

"I have decided not to approve this marriage."

Lisa felt the words hit her like a physical blow.

"Dad..."

Her voice broke.

Riff did not move.

For a moment, he simply stared at her father.

As though he had heard the sentence but his mind refused to accept it.

Her father lowered his eyes.

"This is not because you are a bad man."

"It is not because you don't love my daughter."

"And it is not because I doubt your character."

Riff swallowed.

"Then why, Sir?"

The question was soft.

Respectful.

And somehow that made it even harder to hear.

Her father took a deep breath.

"Because I am afraid."

Riff remained silent.

"For years, your future was uncertain."

"You have only just started this new job."

"You are still building yourself."

"And another family has come with stability, preparation, and certainty."

Lisa shook her head.

"Dad, please..."

He turned to her, pain visible in his eyes.

"Do you think this is easy for me?"

"Do you think I enjoy hurting both of you?"

Her tears began falling freely.

"Then don't."

Her father closed his eyes briefly.

"A father sometimes chooses the path that lets him sleep at night."

"Even when his daughter hates him for it."

For the first time, Riff spoke again.

"Sir..."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"If your concern is my ability to provide..."

"Give me a little more time."

Lisa looked at him hopefully.

"One year."

"Let me prove myself."

"Let me build the stability you're asking for."

Her father shook his head slowly.

"I've already given years."

"I cannot ask my daughter to keep waiting indefinitely."

"It's not indefinite anymore."

Riff leaned forward slightly.

"I have the job now."

"I have a salary."

"I have a plan."

"Sir, please..."

"Don't judge me by the years when I was struggling."

"Judge me by the man standing before you today."

Lisa's mother quietly wiped her eyes.

Her father looked away.

Then finally said the words that shattered the room.

"My decision is final."

Lisa stood up abruptly.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

"No, I can't accept that."

"I love him."

"I have loved him for six years."

"We built our future together."

Her father looked at her with heartbreaking gentleness.

"And I built your future from the day you were born."

"Forgive me for trying to protect it."

Riff slowly rose to his feet.

Lisa grabbed his hand immediately.

"Don't go."

He looked down at her trembling fingers wrapped around his.

For a second, his composure cracked.

Then he gently squeezed her hand.

"Beautiful..."

Her eyes filled with panic.

"Don't call me that if you're leaving."

The pain in her voice nearly broke him.

He turned to her father.

"Sir."

"Thank you for listening to me."

"And thank you for being honest."

Her father nodded silently.

Riff looked back at Lisa.

He wanted to say a thousand things.

He wanted to tell her they would fight.

That love would win.

That he would never let her go.

Instead, he simply whispered,

"Can I speak to you outside?"

They stood beside his car.

The afternoon sun felt cruelly bright.

Lisa was crying openly now.

"This can't be happening."

Riff stared at the ground for several seconds.

Then looked at her.

"Do you want me to keep fighting?"

"Yes!"

"Even if it means putting you between me and your parents?"

"I don't know."

"Even if it means months of arguments?"

"I don't know."

"Even if it means they may resent me?"

Lisa covered her face.

"I don't know!"

That answer hurt him more than the rejection.

Because for the first time...

He realized she wasn't choosing another man.

She was being torn apart by the people she loved.

He gently pulled her into his arms.

She clung to him desperately.

"I don't want to lose you."

His eyes closed.

"I know."

"Tell me what to do."

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then, in the softest voice she had ever heard from him,

"I need tonight to think."

Lisa looked up in shock.

"Think about what?"

His smile was broken.

"About whether loving you means holding on..."

"...or letting you have peace."

He kissed her forehead one last time.

Then got into the car.

Lisa stood frozen as he drove away.

Neither of them knew it then...

But that drive home would become the beginning of the end.

πŸ’” The cruelest thing about their story was this:

Both of them were willing to suffer for love.

And that was exactly why they were about to lose each other.

Episode 18

The longest week of their lives began.

For Lisa, every hour felt heavy.

For Riff, every phone notification made his heart race.

For her father, sleep became difficult.

Day One.

Lisa called Riff after work.

"Have you heard anything?"

"No."

"Maybe that's good."

He smiled softly.

"Maybe."

They talked for an hour.

About ordinary things.

Her patients.

His first day at work.

What they would eat if they ever traveled to another country.

Neither mentioned the decision waiting for them.

Neither wanted to disturb the little peace they still had.

Day Three.

Lisa found her father sitting alone on the veranda.

He was staring at the evening sky.

"Dad?"

"Come sit."

She sat beside him.

For a while, he said nothing.

Then quietly asked,

"Are you happy with him?"

Lisa turned immediately.

"Very."

"Has he ever disrespected you?"

"Never."

"Has he ever made you feel unsafe?"

"No."

Her father nodded slowly.

"Then why do I still feel afraid?"

Lisa's throat tightened.

"Because you're my father."

He smiled sadly.

"Maybe."

Then he added, almost to himself,

"Or maybe because I've spent my whole life trying to protect you from pain."

Day Five.

Riff invited Lisa for a short drive after work.

They ended up at the beach.

The sun was setting, painting the water gold.

Lisa leaned against his shoulder.

"What if your father says no?"

Riff asked quietly.

Her heart skipped.

"He won't."

"But what if he does?"

She pulled away and looked at him.

"Why are you asking that?"

He smiled faintly.

"Because I've learned not to take good things for granted."

Lisa reached for his hand.

"Listen to me."

He did.

"You fought for us when you had nothing."

"You waited."

"You kept your promise."

"If my father sees even half of what I see in you..."

Her eyes became misty.

"...he'll choose you."

Riff looked at her for a long moment.

Then smiled.

"You really believe that?"

"With all my heart."

Day Seven.

The day of the decision.

Lisa woke before dawn.

She prayed longer than she ever had.

Her hands trembled as she adjusted her dress.

Downstairs, her mother moved quietly through the kitchen.

Her father sat in the living room, unusually silent.

At exactly 10:00 a.m., a car stopped outside the gate.

Riff had arrived.

This time, he wasn't carrying gifts.

Only hope.

When he entered the living room, Lisa noticed something.

He looked nervous.

Truly nervous.

For the first time in years.

Her father invited him to sit.

No one spoke immediately.

The silence stretched.

Finally, her father folded his hands.

"Riff."

"Yes, Sir?"

"I've spent the past week praying and thinking."

Lisa held her breath.

"This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life."

Riff nodded respectfully.

"I understand."

Her father's voice became gentle.

"You are a good man."

Lisa's eyes widened.

"You love my daughter."

"Yes, Sir."

"And she loves you."

Riff glanced briefly at Lisa.

"Yes, Sir."

Her father closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them again.

"If I were choosing only with my heart..."

He stopped.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Lisa's fingers tightened around each other.

Riff's jaw clenched.

Her father took a slow breath.

"But..."

That word.

Again.

And this time...

It sounded final.

πŸ’” Some decisions don't break hearts because love is missing...

They break hearts because love exists on both sides of the choice.

HOW MY HUSBAND ENDED OUR 15-YEAR MARRIAGE WITH A VOICE MESSAGE
Episode 17

The drive to Lisa's house felt longer than it actually was.

Riff wasn't nervous about meeting her parents.

He was excited.

For six years...

He had imagined this day.

He had rehearsed every greeting.

Every answer.

Every promise.

Today...

He was no longer arriving as an unemployed young man with dreams.

He was arriving as a man with a job...

And a future to offer.
..

Beside him on the passenger seat lay three things.

A neatly wrapped gift for Lisa's father.

A bouquet of fresh flowers for her mother.

And...

The faded sketch of the little house he had drawn years ago.

He smiled as he glanced at it.

"Almost there..."
..

At Lisa's house...

She had changed outfits three times.

Nothing looked right.

Her mother chuckled.

"You've never been this nervous."

Lisa smiled shyly.

"I just want today to go well."

Her mother gently adjusted her necklace.

"You've always looked beautiful."

Lisa hugged her tightly.

"Thank you, Mum."

"I know how much today means to you."

Lisa nodded.

"It means everything."
..

A knock sounded at the gate.

Lisa's heart almost jumped out of her chest.

"He's here!"

She instinctively stood up.

Her father spoke calmly.

"Sit down."

She obeyed immediately.

A few moments later...

Riff walked into the living room.

Dressed in a navy-blue suit.

Clean-shaven.

Confident.

Yet respectful.

He greeted everyone warmly before presenting the gifts.

"Good afternoon, Sir."

"Good afternoon, Ma."

Lisa couldn't stop smiling.

Seeing him standing there...

She silently thanked God.

Her father invited him to sit.

For the next thirty minutes...

The conversation flowed surprisingly well.

They talked about his new job.

His plans.

His responsibilities.

His goals.

Her father asked difficult questions.

Riff answered each one honestly.

He never exaggerated.

He never pretended to be wealthier than he was.

Whenever he didn't know something...

He admitted it.

That honesty quietly impressed Lisa's parents.

Finally...

Her father leaned back in his chair.

"So..."

Riff straightened slightly.

"I believe you know why I'm here."

"Yes, Sir."

"Tell me."

Riff smiled respectfully.

"I've loved your daughter for six years."

"I have watched her grow into an incredible woman."

"She has inspired me to become a better man."

He glanced briefly at Lisa.

Their eyes met.

She smiled encouragingly.

Turning back to her father, he continued,

"I know I should have come earlier."

"But I wanted to stand before you only after I could honestly say..."

"...that I am ready to begin taking responsibility for a family."

He paused.

"I may not be wealthy."

"I don't own a mansion."

"I don't drive an expensive car."

"But I promise you this..."

He looked directly into her father's eyes.

"Your daughter will never have to question whether she is loved."

Silence.

Even Lisa's mother lowered her eyes.

Riff continued.

"I cannot promise there will never be difficult days."

"But I promise she'll never face them alone."

Lisa felt tears filling her eyes.

This...

This was the man she had prayed for.

Her father remained quiet for a long time.

Then he spoke.

"Riff..."

"Yes, Sir?"

"I believe you love my daughter."

"I do."

"I also believe she loves you."

Riff smiled.

"She does."

"But..."

That word again.

The same word that had haunted them for months.

Her father's face became serious.

"There is something you don't know."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Riff frowned.

"Sir?"

Her father folded his hands.

"About two months ago..."

"A respected family approached us."

Riff's smile slowly disappeared.

"They asked for Lisa's hand in marriage."

He instinctively looked toward Lisa.

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't know how to tell you."

She whispered.

"I was afraid."

Riff looked back at her father.

"And...?"

"We asked them to wait."

Hope returned to his face.

"But they came back yesterday."

The room fell silent.

"They're expecting our answer."

Riff swallowed.

"I understand."

Her father sighed deeply.

"As a father..."

"I have only one daughter."

"I must choose what I believe is best for her."

Riff nodded slowly.

"I respect that."

"You have spoken well today."

"Thank you, Sir."

"You've answered every question honestly."

Riff waited.

His heart pounded louder with every passing second.

Her father finally said,

"I need one week."

Lisa immediately looked up.

"Dad..."

He raised a hand gently.

"One week."

"I will pray."

"I will think."

"And then..."

"I will give you my final decision."

Riff stood respectfully.

"I'll wait, Sir."

Her father nodded.

"I know you will."

As Riff prepared to leave, Lisa quietly followed him outside.

They stood beside his car.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally, she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

He smiled gently.

"For what?"

"I should have told you."

He shook his head.

"No."

"I'm just glad you didn't carry that burden alone anymore."

A tear escaped down her cheek.

"What if..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

He gently wiped away the tear with his thumb.

"Don't."

"But..."

"I've waited six years."

He smiled with quiet confidence.

"I can wait one more week."

Then he added with a grin,

"Besides..."

"I think your father likes me."

Lisa laughed through her tears.

"I think so too."

He kissed her forehead tenderly.

"Have faith."

"I do."

Neither of them noticed...

From the sitting room window...

Lisa's father was watching.

He saw the way Riff looked at his daughter.

He saw the gentleness.

The respect.

The sincerity.

For the first time...

He quietly admitted something to himself.

"If love alone were enough..."

"I would choose this young man without hesitation."

But life...

Had taught him that fathers sometimes make decisions with their minds...

Even when their hearts disagree.

πŸ’” Sometimes the hardest decisions aren't between a good person and a bad one... they're between two futures that both seem right in different ways.
