France formally recognised the State of Palestine, following a growing number of countries that have taken the same step, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

'The time has come because the urgency is everywhere. The time for peace has come because we are moments away from to no longer being able to grasp it,' French President Emmanuel Macron said during his speech at the UN.

He stressed that the only path forward is a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine can live side by side in peace.
