*Day 2 of Marketing Mishaps
*
Imagine scanning a ketchup bottle expecting a fun campaign... and ending up on an adult website. Well, it actually happened to Heinz.
Back in the early 2010s, Heinz ran a creative "My Ketchup" campaign in Germany where users could scan a QR code on the bottle and design their own ketchup label. It was engaging, interactive, and personal. People loved it.
After the campaign ended, Heinz forgot to renew the domain that the QR code pointed to.
In 2015, a customer scanned the QR code, only to be redirected to a very not-so-family-friendly site. The man then posted it online, and the internet exploded with memes, jokes, and headlines like: “Ketchup Gets Saucy: Just Not the Way You'd Think.”
They apologized, offered him a custom bottle, and tried to mop it up. But by then, the internet had already eaten the story up.
Even the best campaigns can backfire if you don’t plan for after they’re done. QR codes stick around. So do URLs on packaging. And in the hands of the internet, anything with a digital door is just one missed renewal away from chaos.
👉 Never ghost your domains. They might come back with a whole new personality.
