Miriam Dema MIRIAM DEMA stopped making art for three years, went to Peru to learn cooking, and somehow found her way back to art there.

She started painting again among Lima’s grey skies, colourful markets and the food she was cooking every day. Over time, the table became less about still life and more about what happens around it: family, care and closeness, much of it tied to her grandmother, who was almost like a second mother to her.

In one of her most personal works, a table floats in the sky with the birthday cake her grandmother used to make for the family. Miriam says that work changed the way she painted from then on.

In our interview, she talks about why she stepped away from art, how she learned to trust her instincts, and the childhood memory behind La Hora Mágica.
