1 MINUTE READING TIME ⏰

President Sheikh Mohamed has ordered the release of 1,440 prisoners across the UAE to mark Ramadan.

The “financial obligations that were incurred by them in implementation of those sentences” will also be paid, state news agency Wam reported.

UAE leaders typically offer amnesty to hundreds of inmates each year in keeping with the spirit of the holy month.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, released “1,856 prisoners of different nationalities”, reported the emirate's media office.

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, granted the release of 738 inmates, said the emirate's government media bureau. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, also ordered the release of 134 prisoners.

Upon confirmation that Ramadan would begin on Wednesday, Sheikh Mohamed shared a celebratory message.

“With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, I extend my sincere best wishes to the people of the UAE and across the world,” Sheikh Mohamed wrote on X. “Ramadan is a time for reflection and generosity, and an opportunity to strengthen bonds within families and communities.”

Ramadan starts in Palestine in war torn Gaza as residents pray in rubbles light 💡 up collapse building 🇵🇸🥹

Palestinians in Gaza are entering Ramadan with heavy hearts, as the Muslim holy month’s traditional festivities give way to grief and survival concerns during a fragile “ceasefire” that Israel violates on a daily basis.

“There is no joy after we lost our family and loved ones,” said Gaza City resident Fedaa Ayyad. “Even if we try to cope with the situation, we can’t truly feel it in our hearts … I am one of those who cannot feel the atmosphere of Ramadan.”

Ramadan began on Wednesday in Gaza, typically a period when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset while embracing family gatherings, spiritual devotion, contemplation, and generosity.

The reality in Gaza, however, is grim. Israel’s genocidal war has killed at least 72,061 people and wounded 171,715 since October 2023, according to the Ministry of Health.

It has also shattered infrastructure and displaced the majority of the population. Financial hardship dominated conversations in markets this week.

“There is no cash among the people. There is no work. It is indeed Ramadan, but Ramadan requires money,” said Gaza City resident Waleed Zaqzouq, calling on merchants to recognise people’s economic struggles.

“Before the war, people lived a dignified life,” he added. “The situation has completely changed in the war, meaning people have been devastated and worn down.”

Harsh winter conditions have intensified suffering, with extreme cold killing children, and torrential rains flooding displacement camps and collapsing damaged buildings.

“There is much that has changed from this Ramadan to Ramadan before the war,” reflected Raed Koheel from Gaza City. “In the past, the atmosphere was more delightful. The streets were lit up with decorations. All streets had decorations. Our children were happy.”

Five Nipah Virus Cases Confirmed in West Bengal, Indian Officials Say.

1 MINUTE READING TIME ⏰

Indian health authorities are on high alert after a deadly Nipah virus outbreak was confirmed in the eastern state of West Bengal. So far, five people have tested positive for Nipah Virus Infection, and nearly 100 others have been placed under quarantine.

The outbreak, centered near the state capital Kolkata, has raised serious public health concerns. This is because the virus has no known cure or vaccine and carries a high risk of death.

Officials said three new cases were detected earlier this week, including a doctor, a nurse, and a health worker. These cases were added to two earlier cases involving nurses who were working at a private hospital in Barasat, a city near Kolkata.

Health officials believe the outbreak of Nipah Virus Infection began inside this hospital. Several medical professionals were exposed while treating patients.

One of the infected nurses is now in critical condition and remains in a coma after developing severe fever and breathing difficulties.

A senior official from the West Bengal health department said, “The condition of the male nurse is improving, but the woman patient remains very critical.

Both of them are being treated in the ICCU.” The situation has caused concern among hospital staff and local residents. As a result, emergency containment measures have been put in place.

Authorities suspect the virus may have spread from a patient suffering from serious respiratory illness who died before being tested for Nipah.

Consequently, this has increased fears that others may have been unknowingly exposed to the virus. Contact tracing teams were immediately deployed.

Nearly 100 people who came into contact with the infected patients have been asked to remain in home quarantine.

Furthermore, experts are continuing their efforts to identify additional Nipah Virus Infection cases among the contacts.

All confirmed patients have been transferred to a specialized infectious diseases hospital in eastern Kolkata to ensure strict isolation and proper medical care.

Health officials said the move was necessary to reduce the risk of further transmission. It also ensures that experts trained in handling highly infectious diseases can manage the cases involving Nipah Virus Infection.

Nipah virus is a rare but extremely dangerous zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. It was first identified in 1998 during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia and later in Singapore. Since then, cases have been reported in Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. In India, the virus has caused multiple deadly outbreaks.

Especially in the southern state of Kerala, dozens of people have died since 2018.

The virus is carried mainly by fruit bats, also known as flying foxes. Humans can become infected through direct contact with infected bats or animals such as pigs.

The virus can also spread through food or drinks contaminated by bats, such as fruit or raw date palm sap. It can also spread through contact with the bodily fluids of infected people.

Early symptoms of Nipah virus infection often resemble common illnesses, including fever, headache, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms usually appear within four to 14 days after exposure, though longer incubation periods have been recorded in previous outbreaks.

As the disease progresses, some patients develop encephalitis, a serious inflammation of the brain.

This condition can cause confusion, drowsiness, seizures, and rapid loss of consciousness. In many severe cases, patients fall into a coma within 24 to 48 hours. According to the World Health Organization, the fatality rate for Nipah virus ranges between 40 and 75 percent.

This makes it one of the deadliest viral infections known.

There is currently no approved treatment or vaccine for Nipah virus. Medical care focuses on supportive treatment, including rest, hydration, and managing symptoms.

Several experimental treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies and antiviral drugs, are under development. However, they are still in early testing stages.

Experts have warned that the Nipah virus remains a serious threat because of its zoonotic nature.

Rajeev Jayadevan, former president of the Indian Medical Association in Cochin, said human infections are rare and usually occur due to accidental spillover from bats. “This is more likely in rural and forest-adjacent areas where agricultural practices increase contact between humans and fruit bats searching for food,” he explained.

The World Health Organization has classified Nipah virus as a priority pathogen due to its potential to cause an epidemic.

While the virus does not spread as easily between humans as diseases like COVID-19, experts warn that increased interaction between humans and wildlife could raise the risk of future outbreaks.

So far, Nipah virus has never been recorded in the United States, and health experts say its limited human-to-human transmission reduces the risk of a global spread.

However, scientists continue to monitor related viruses and warn that mutations could make future strains more dangerous.

Indian authorities say early detection, strict isolation, and public cooperation will be main to controlling the current outbreak.

For now, officials urge people to remain calm but cautious, follow health advisories, and avoid contact with potentially contaminated food or animals as efforts continue to prevent further loss of life.

Raising awareness about Nipah Virus Infection is now regarded as a critical part of these prevention efforts.

UAE recalled Aptamil baby formula over safety fears.

1 MINUTE READING TIME ⏰

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Emirates Drug Establishment on Tuesday announced a batch of baby formula is being recalled from supermarket and shop shelves.

Aptamil Advance 1 POF, made by Nutricia Middle East (Danone), is used as milk for infants from birth to six months.

A specific batch with an expiry date of November 8, 2026, has been recalled due to the possibility the product contains substances harmful to infants, state news agency Wam reported.

Traces of the bacillus cereus were detected in a stage of production. This bacteria can produce cereulide, a toxin which may in some cases lead to health disorders, including food poisoning and digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The UAE move follows Danone's announcement of a recall of specific batches of infant formula and follow-on milk distributed in the UK and European Union countries, after the discovery of potential contamination with cereulide, the Irish Food Safety Authority said.

All consumers in the UAE who have bought the Aptamil product are advised to check the expiry date at the bottom of the packaging.

If it is November 8, 2026, the product is not to be consumed and should instead be dispose of safely, authorioties said.

Last month, a batch of Nestle baby formula products was recalled across the Middle East including in the UAE as a precaution.

Action was taken after one of the raw materials used in the manufacturing process was found to contain traces of Bacillus cereus.
