Velociraptor is one of the most famous dinosaurs, first discovered in 1923 during an expedition to the Gobi Desert in Asia. Since then, at least ten nearly complete skeletons have been found in Mongolia and China. This turkey-sized predator had a long, slender skull about 25 cm (10 inches) in length, with large eye sockets that suggest excellent vision even in low light. Its jaws held up to 60 sharp, serrated teeth, perfect for slicing through flesh. Velociraptor lived in hot, dry desert environments where days were scorching and nights were cold, and its feathers likely helped it stay warm during chilly desert nights.

Triceratops was one of the largest and among the last of the horned dinosaurs. When its first fossil was discovered in 1887 in Colorado, it was so massive and heavily horned that it was initially mistaken for an ancient bison. This iconic dinosaur carried a huge bony frill that protected its head and neck, but also likely served as a colorful display to attract mates. Its strong, hooked beak could grasp and snap tough plants, which were then chewed by rows of sturdy teeth. Weighing roughly four times as much as a modern rhinoceros, Triceratops was truly a giant, armed with brow horns that could reach 1 meter (3 feet) in length perfect for sparring with rivals or defending itself from predators.

Stegoceras was a small but fascinating member of the pachycephalosaur family best known for their thick, domed skulls. About the size of a goat, this dinosaur likely used its rounded head for display or gentle head-butting contests with others of its kind. Its unique skull structure and detailed bone patterns give scientists valuable clues about how these unusual dinosaurs behaved and evolved. A compact creature with a tough attitude, Stegoceras remains one of the most intriguing small dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous.

This fossilized nest was discovered in Montana during the 1980s. At first, scientists believed it belonged to a hypsilophodont dinosaur called Orodromeus, since its bones were found scattered around the site. Later research revealed that the nest actually belonged to the carnivorous Troodon. The scattered Orodromeus bones were likely leftovers from meals the adult Troodon brought to its young. Each Troodon egg was placed upright in mud, with only the top exposed, helping to keep the eggs warm and properly insulated.

Egg Fossil
Scientists were able to identify the dinosaur species once the eggs were cut open and examined. Inside, the fossilized bones clearly belonged to a baby Troodon. Many dinosaur eggs are preserved with such incredible detail that even the microscopic structure of their shells can be seen. This fine-level preservation shows that dinosaur eggs had hard, bird-like shells, rather than the soft, leathery shells seen in lizards and crocodiles.

Inside The Egg
From the fossilized bones preserved inside the egg, scientists can reconstruct how a baby Troodon looked just before hatching. Its head is tucked down between its legs, with large eyes and an oversized head, as is typical for many young animals. A small nose horn is also present an adaptation it likely used to break through the tough eggshell from the inside. This horn would have disappeared shortly after hatching.

South America was once home to some of the most unique and powerful dinosaurs on Earth. From swift predators to armored giants, each species tells a story of a continent filled with ancient mystery and fierce survival. Here’s a look at the incredible dinosaurs that once ruled this land millions of years ago.

Giganotosaurus
One of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs ever discovered a fast, fierce hunter of the Cretaceous forests.

Eoraptor
One of the earliest dinosaurs, small and agile, living long before the giants appeared.

Angaturama
A slender, fish-eating predator with a long snout, adapted for hunting near rivers.

Mirischia
A lightweight carnivore built for speed, chasing down small prey with precision.

Herrerasaurus
A primitive predator from the Triassic, among the first true dinosaurs to dominate its environment.

Irritator
A spinosaur-like hunter with a long, narrow jaw perfect for snapping up fish.

Pisanosaurus
One of the earliest plant-eaters small, fast, and always alert to danger.

Aucasaurus
A fierce abelisaur with powerful legs and reduced arms, known for its aggressive hunting style.

Santanaraptor
A fast-moving carnivore, relying on agility and strength to catch prey.

Staurikosaurus
A small but quick predator from the Triassic period, armed with sharp teeth and speed.

Carnotaurus
The “meat-eating bull” famous for its horns, muscular build, and unmatched sprinting ability.

Saltasaurus
A heavily armored titan with bony plates along its back, using defense rather than speed to survive.
