The Unlikely Accountant

The Unlikely Accountant Hi - I'm Victoria! A very unlikely chartered accountant. I want to dispel the myth that there is such a thing as a 'numbers person'.

And that actually, not being confident with numbers could be holding you back from things you'd really like to achieve

If you’re planning on renting in then you will need to factor in estate agent fees. This is different to what we’re used to in UK, where the landlord pays the fees. But here it’s the tenants responsibility, and it’s usually 5% (+ tax!) I know people associate Dubai with being tax free, but there are taxes on certain things!!!

Property Finder is the best app to use if you want to get a feel for the Dubai property market!

Rents here can be expensive (of course there are lots of variables!) so this app is the best one to get a feel for what your budget can get you!

Just a short walk home,’ they said. Fast forward: I’ve crossed three highways, inhaled half a construction site, and ended up at a dead end next to a sand dune. 🤦‍♀️

Dubai, you’re gorgeous — but you really weren’t built for pedestrians. 🚶‍♀️💨

Tag your friend who still insists on walking everywhere!

So I’m determined that I want to get my steps in in and not just cabs everywhere. But this place is so big I either underestimate how far it is, or make a wrong turn and end up outside longer than I need to me!!!

It’s a work in progress….

I pressed pause to unpack my life (literally) and start a new chapter in Dubai 🇦🇪

Now I’m back — with content that’s a little sunnier and a lot more tax-free 😉☀️

🤑 Are you missing out on FREE MONEY!?

If you're a higher rate tax payer and make pension contributions then you are entitled to tax relief but YOU have to claim it.

Previously the only way to do this was via your self assessment. If you are employed with no other income then chances are you wouldn't have ever completed a self assessment!

However as of this year, HMRC has created a dedicated section on their website where you can specifically claim your higher rate pension relief - easy right!?

You can also go back up to 4 tax years!!!

Share this with anyone you know is a higher rate tax payer that might be entitled to some cash!!

🚨 SCAM WARNING! 🚨

Scammers are getting smarter – pretending to be from trusted places like HMRC, your bank, or even Royal Mail. They'll pressure you to act fast – pay a bill, click a link, or share personal info.

🛑 If a message feels rushed or threatening, that's a BIG red flag. Take a breath. Stop. Think. Don't click. Don't pay.

✅ Always verify through official channels before doing anything.

👉 Stay safe and share this to protect someone else!

💰 Did you know?

Paying more than 35 years of National Insurance won’t boost your State Pension — 35 years is the max you need for the full amount.

BUT — if you’re still working past State Pension age, you stop paying NI altogether. That’s extra money in your pocket every month! 🙌

✅ Make sure you’re not overpaying — and understand what you’re entitled to.
